Pokémon TCG: Sword and Shield—Brilliant Stars

4Kids hates riceballs

It's true. I fail at life because I think Pikachu going under a girl's skirt needs to be edited out. :nonono:
. . .
Pikachu going under a girl's skirt is a little deep. Sorry if you disagree.
It wasn't edited out (it was shortened by a frame or so though). Were you emotionally scarred when Pikachu ran under that girl's skirt in the first season opening?

http://youtube.com/watch?v=pUnlh-Air2w American version for comparison. Pikachu's "infamous" under the skirt run is @ 0:45

THAT?! I thought you guys were talking about something completely different! Just ignore my last post please.

But yeah, I fail at life, because some edits are good. Oh well... I try...

Carry on.

You have no idea how it works, do you? 4Kids wasn't paid to dub Pokemon, 4Kids bought the rights to dub Pokemon. Never mind that they no longer have said rights.

Alright then, allow me to rephrase. They shouldn't sell the rights to those dub companies then.

My point is this: if it's too adult for the target audience, instead of changing what is a perfectly good show and messing it up by altering it, why don't they just do the obvious and change their target audience? For instance, what do you think would have happened if 4Kids really did get Naruto? You know all those comedy vids on Youtube of that scenario? Well don't laugh... okay, go ahead and laugh because some of them are really funny, but you do realize that they would really do a LOT of those things instead of doing the more logical thing which is aim at a teenage audience, which is what Viz Media did, thank the gods. It's that simple.

Or, like I said, have the Japanese companies only sell them to people who will accurately subtitle them and air them on television in the way that they were intended.

Also, I just have to ask, do the creators of animes who actually know English ever watch the dubs, even out of curiosity's sake? I doubt it, because if they did they would be appalled.

Because they hate money?

Your example has nothing to do with your point. You argued in favor of changing the target audience instead of changing the show; however, in your hypothetical example, 4Kids would have changed to show to target a younger audience. That said, target audiences little nothing beyond marketing. You can't just suddenly decide to target adults with a children show. This doesn't mean that there won't be adults who like the show just that they're not the ones being catered to. Regardless, Pocket Monsters is not too adult for the target audience. 4Kids just loves to change things without reason.

Or, like I said, have the Japanese companies only sell them to people who will accurately subtitle them and air them on television in the way that they were intended.
If anime only aired subtitled, the ratings would be terrible. Not to mention, the companies are probably more interested in profit (I hear that's what they do) than pandering to an incredibly niche audience.

Also, I just have to ask, do the creators of animes who actually know English ever watch the dubs, even out of curiosity's sake? I doubt it, because if they did they would be appalled.
Not like they'd probably have too much say in the matter.

Ages 13+ is not the same as PG-13 given that they're different rating systems.

Wikipedia said:
PG-13 - Parents Strongly Cautioned - Some material may be inappropriate for children under 13. These films contain sexual content, nudity (partial), language, humor, mature themes, terror and/or intense action violence. Bloodshed is rarely present. This is the minimum rating at which drug content is present although Marijuana is the maximum use for this rating. While PG-13 films usually have more profanity than PG films, it is not necessarily common. A rating of PG-13 simply means that a film contains more profane language and/or racial insults than the PG rating permits. A PG-13 film with intense violence means there will be blood present in a violent way.

Ages 13+ is more like guideline than an actual rating. Of course, Uncut Cardcaptor Sakura has more questionable content than rice balls.

uncut cardcaptor sakura = good :(
some episode of (japanese) pokemon can be questionable (like the Dragonair one that was banned?)

I was being sarcasitic, obviously.

Most of the time, japanese companies DO sell the license to an american company that does fairly accurate dubbing and subbing (I know someone on this board is going to argue against this, but for the sake of sanity, let's not go there). It's just that those shows almost never make it onto american TV and you have to buy them on dvd.

Gurren Lagaan is coming to sci-fi this summer, subtitled. So I guess some things change.

4kids quit acquiring new anime about a year ago. At least you won't see them butchering any more shows. This entire topic is pretty moot unless some other company comes along and does the chop job that 4kids is famous for. Most of the time I just sit back and say that dubs are a lot better (sans anything 4kids ever did) and just watch what I can. I watch most of my anime on dvd and online, anyway.

No. You now fail at life.

Edits are never needed. The dub should always remain as true to the anime as humanly possible. Of course, it's not like that's happened, but the Great Ones of Japan simply shouldn't be hiring those imbeciles like 4Kids to dub it, but rather, hire intelligent people to subtitle it. That's all there is to it. No excuse. At all. Whatsoever.

Thank you Eevee Lover!
I was about to post the same thing.

They need to leave a Anime to its true form.
Like Pokemon was more along the lins for teens then little ones.
Like in the Pokemon Managa..
Pokemon got cut in half...
o_O

OMG my own FRIEND thinks I now fail at life?

What the heck is wrong with this world?!?!?

......
...........
..............

Okay, you can't tell me Pokemon getting cut in half is kid friendly. the whole point of these edits are to make the program more acceptable for kids to watch. would you wanna see a Pokemon get cut in half when you were 5?

I didn't think so.. Or at least, I wouldn't...

I never said, "Edit the heck out of the anime to make it stink like eggs." I just simply said that some edits are needed and are very good ones for the Target purpose/audience.

No, you wanted Pokemon to be Rated TV-14 for lots of Fantasy violence and all that. Sure, leave the anime alone. You want it aimed at kids? Edit out what isn't appropriate for kids. I'm not saying I wouldn't enjoy watching a Pokmon anime aimed at my age group now. But when I was 5, I wouldn't want to see Pokemon get cut in HALF. I know that was in the Manga but still....

Squirtle Squad threatened to kill Misty? You wanna hear that when you're 5? You were hard core dude. HARD CORE. But no, you heard a child friendly threat to turn her hair purple. what's so bad about purple hair? What's so bad about killing someone? Exactly!

Misty was IMO the best Girl on the show...

And Threaten to kill her off? Yeah, I wouldn't like that. But hey, that's what makes me, me.

I fail at life being me.

Can't please all of the people all of the time, oh well...

I'll agree with you, that rice ball thing was one heck of a stupid edit!!

But not ALL edits are stupid!

\/ can you not tell that I wasn't talking about rice balls at the moment?

Man, at least the new editors for the show actually change the riceballs to the thing they're called. I remember an old episode with Primeape in it, and Primeape steals Brock's "donuts"... but they were really riceballs.

Haha I had the one on VHS when I was like 6.

I thought, "those don't quite look like donuts to me..."

Awww well. The rice ball things are stupid edits. I NEVER disagreed with that.

But I will disagree that some edits are needed to keep things from getting out of hand. We don't see anymore Jinx do we? I didn't think so...

Yeah, the only decent banned episodes are:
Beauty and the Beach (obviously)
Electric-Soldier Porygon (Ah! My eye!)
Shaking Island Battle
Yeah, the Island one was because of the earthquakes thing, but they still have yet to air it.

But Jynx is supposed to look like a japanese fashion style. It just happens that it also looks like a blackface actor. That wasn't intentional.

I know it wasn't intentional, but the point is, we don't see Jinx and things aren't out of hand.

I'm sure that Rice Balls weren't intentionally meant to be Sandwiches either. But they are...
