Canadian Nationals 6th place report

For starters, if you don’t know who I am, I’m Juan Carlos Lorenzo and I’ve been playing Pokemon for about 1½ years. I’m a Masters player from Hamilton, Ontario. First I want to thank my friends Matt, Geneses, Curtis, and Bidier for giving me memorable moments for the game we loved to play. Second, I want to tell you that this is my first report that I’ve done only for the fact that I have a have a terrible memory and I’m writing two days after the day... I’ll try my best to be as detailed as possible... let’s start here...

Friday night, we were coming up with last minute deck ideas of different variants of decks. I was satisfied with a more agro-PLOX which focuses on a possible turn 1 lock, I thought it had better match ups. I find the cards I need and put them into my deckbox and go to sleep 7:00 am. The other guys decided to play a more defensive-PLOX which focuses keeping Gardevoir alive.

2 hours later I wake up, it’s 9 am and I wake up the boys and we head to McDonalds where we Meet up with Geneses and Junior to have a small breakfast, thank you Micky D’s for 1 dollar drinks. Than we head to pick up Princess and we head to the event.

As soon as we arrived we had to get organized and handed in our reg slips and decklists. Before every match I always get one my friends Chris, a senior who I met at my local league, to powershuffle my deck because for some crazy reason I always believes he stacks my deck. After last minute powershuffling from Chris I was ready to play and I was confident in my deck.

= - = - =

Round 1: Edward (Blaziken Luxchomp)

I played him before, but I didn’t know it, sorry about that bro I have a terrible memory, but he reminds me that he played me at Regionals. I flip over a Ralts and Baltoy, and he flips over a Garchomp and Luxray. I start and I attach my energy and future site my deck. He starts his turn and attaches a DCE onto his active Garchomp hits me for 30... wow I almost thought he was gonna knock it out. I top deck into a Bebes =P get my Claydol, drop my Uxie draw a bunch of cards and I do some other stuff and I Claydol for more stuff and I attach my DCE and Expert Belt and I hit his Garchomp for 80 and knock him out. After a few rounds he catchs up in prizes 3-3 and I push up more Gardevoirs and he cant couldn’t recover. Good Game Edward hopefully we play again next year. 1-0

= - = - =

Round 2: Cant remember his name I think it was Jonathan (CurseGar)

I remember this guy from when we played a prank on him from battle roads a few weeks back. During the set up I noticed one my cards were bent and I was forced to resleeve my deck, oh well I guess it happens, I was sad I couldn’t use my Lucario sleeves (A big thanks to Paul for the HeartGold SoulSilver sleeves). Anyways I shuffle up and we set up. I start a match with a Ralts and he flips over a Spiritomb and Baltoy. I draw into a Baltoy and play it, attach my energy and future site for a Mesprit. He draws into a Gastly attaches an energy and uses darkness grace to evolve into a Claydol. I drop my Mesprit and a turn after I proceed to Psychic Lock him after that. He takes tries to take down a Gardevoir but I scoop it and push up another one. I dropped the rare candy Duskull and I send back his Gengar, he scoops. Good Game, sorry I cant remember your name but Im sure you’ll know me as Juan now instead of Curtis. 2-0

= - = - =

Round 3: Reed (PowerPluff)

I always had fun playing games with Reed because of his random decks. TBH I was sorta rooting for him during our match =P lol. I flip over a Duskull and Baltoy and he starts with a Hoppip and Baltoy. I start (like I always do :p ) I drop my Mesprit and then countersong his Hoppip and draw my first prize. At this point I realize that Reed cant just be playing Jumpluff, he must be playing something epic. So he pushed up his Baltoy and attaches an energy and Psychic Balances my hand for some cards. I try to scoop up my Mesprit to try to lock him again, I fail... Twice. I drop my Ralts but didn’t get my energy attachment. He drew into a Godhand with Psychic Balance and owns me came back with a vengeance. He draws sets up a Claydol and get his Jumpluff set up. It wasn’t done there... he also sets up an Alakazam *EPIC*. He leafgaurds his Jump and knocks out my Duskull. I get a Gardy out and Bebes for a Claydol. He Power Cancels my Cosmic Power but he discards a roseannes, so I Telepass it for an energy and uxie and end my turn. He proceeds to keep his lock on me and he hits me kills my Mesprit and Uxie. I finally get my Gardevoir charged and Expert Belt it and attach my energy to Ralts, I drop a Crobat and knock out his Jump. He sends up another Jump and sets one up on the bench and hits me. I fail another scoop up :(... THREE TIMES in one game... oh well... I scoop up my cards and showed that super scoop up that I can scoop up my cards whenever I want. Good Game Reed always a pleasure to play you and your crazy decks :), I hope u consider going to Hawaii. 2-1

----

At this point I wait around for the round to be over but a small incident happened during this round. Time was called too early and my friend Matt scooped up his cards after showing to his opponent that he could’ve won the game, only to be told that there was another 3 minutes in the round by another Judge. Too bad nothing was done about that and Matt dropped the tourney to preserve his ranking. He waits for us to finish for like a million hours....

= - = - =

Round 4: Dirk (Torterra)

Ive never seen this dude before, but he seemed like a really nice guy. I found out hes from out west and that he brought his son down from the Junior division to play. Well I start with a terrible start. I flip over an Azelf and he flips over a Turtwig and Baltoy. I draw into a Ralts miss an energy. He hits for me 20. I miss on my energy but I play a Baltoy and place him on my bench and I pass. He Judges me after and I draw into Rare Candy and Gardy, but still no Energies. So I telepass his Judge, nothing... I use my Judge and still nothing... I pass. He gets a set up going and has 2 Giant Contents starring at me in the face with 160 HP. I draw into a Judge so I telepass his Judge again miss on the energy... I drew the same Judge (cause I only play two), and I use it again... still no energy. He knocks something out and draws his prize, 6-3 Dirk. I get a Bebes and look through my deck for a Claydol... Prized -_-... I look for my Uxie... Prized... I look for my Azelf... Oh yeah he knocked it out... I look for a kirlia to evolve my other Ralts... darn its Prized... At this point I knew I lost so but I was determined to knock out his Torterra... I failed and got owned. Good Game Dirk it was a pleasure meeting you I hope we can play again in the future for a rematch. 2-2

----

I was downed about the fact that I couldn’t get an energy from like over 9000 turns. Matt told me I needed to win my next 3 games if I wanted to play in top cut... the pressure was on for me to win.

= - = - =

Round 5: Cant remember your name but I know you were a Pokedaddy (Flygon)

Before the match we were discussing about getting Donked and thats how this game is now. I start like usual because I cant call it properly. I flip over a Ralts he flips and he flips over a Trapinch. I attach an energy and Future site for a Kirlia. He drops a BTS Vibrava and passes. I play Kirlia DCE and drop an Expert. I felt bad for Donking him but we play a fun game after and it lasts longer... Good Game sorry I cant remember your name, looking forward to seeing you again. 3-2

= - = - =

Round 6: Man I am so bad with names its not even funny... I dunno why someone would even read this report. Atleast I remember his deck – JumpLux

Cant remember much of early part of the game (I probably started though), but we both get a full set up but I was a bit luckier. I make THREE HUGE scoop ups. I scooped up my damaged Gardevoir and send up another one. I scoop up my Uxie to drop a rare candy Dusknoir on him, and in the same turn I scooped up my Crobat *yeah I don’t play turns =P *, and knock out a Jump while sending another one back into his deck. He draws dead after and he scoops a few rounds after. Good Game again sorry for not remembering your name, im very bad. 4-2

----

One more game and I could make it into top cut.

= - = - =

Round 7: Jonathan (Torterra/Flygon)

I remember him from Montreal Provincials when he was playing PLOX too. I was hoping for my first mirror match. I flip over my Ralts he starts with a Baltoy. I start the round by attaching an energy and future site my deck for a Collectors. He draws into a Sunkern (who???) and BTS into a Sunflora (“Wahhh... what does that do?”), searches for a Turtwig (OHHHH), retreats his Baltoy and sends up Sunflora. I get Uxie, Baltoy and Duskull to scare him. I draw God with Uxie and after using Claydol I draw the Belt and DCE to knock out his Sunflora. It takes a while for him to set up but he gets a Torterra Lv. X out. However he misplayed by dropping a Cherrubi on his Bench and I bring it down for my last prize. I got my revenge on Torterra. Good Game Jonathan see you again, always a pleasure to play a game with you. 5-2

----

Wow... I did it... my mind was set for the Gold. I find out that Bidier, Curtis, Geneses, Junior, Reed, Bin, James, Sean, and David-John make it in Top 32. James squeezed in with top 32 with a 4-3 record. Well done boys.

= - = - =

Round 8: Daryl (Machamp/Gliscor)

This was the first time Ive seen Daryl and we find out about each other a little before the match. Right beside me was my friend Junior and we joke around a bit before the match :). Daryl wanted to see Junior and me to battle =P...

Game 1:

I start like usual and he has a Gligar and Machop out and I start with my Ralts. I future site a deck (I cant remember if it was his deck or mine, cause sometimes I like to be a risky). After that he gets a Gliscor out and starts chipping away at my Ralts. I evolve and hit it for 60. He burns me and I get hurt. I level it up and knock out his Gliscor. I knock it out and proceed to take a few more prizes and he scoops.

Game 2:

He decides to start the game and tries to attack my Ralts with his Gligar but gets tails and does nothing. I get my Claydol out collectors for Uxie, Mesprit, and Ralts. And I have the lock first turn. He draws dead and attacks again but fails. I get my Gardy out and start locking him after a few rounds he scoops.

Good Game Daryl it was nice to meet you and I hope we can play again. Thanks for letting me keep that die :). 6-2

----

Wow, again... I couldn’t believe I was gonna advance. I find out that Reed and James played each other as well as Geneses and Bidier, and Sean and David-John. Myself, Bidier, James, Curtis, Sean, and Bin make into top 16. Junior, David-John, and Reed don’t advance. Its upsetting that some of us had to play each other but thats the game we have to battle friends sometimes.
I do some research and I find out that I am playing Edward again. I knew what he was playing but I was afraid of if he had a Mewtwo Counter or not... because I never used Mewtwo in our first match

= - = - =

Round 9: Edward (Blaziken/Luxchomp)

Game 1:

I start with a Ralts and he goes first with Luxray and Garchomp. He plays a DCE and bites me for 30. I use my collectors to get Mewtwo, Uxie, and Mesprit. A few turns later I get my Mewtwo Lv. X out and he knocks out a few Pokemon until it was only my Mewtwo out all alone. He scoops and Game one was mine.

Game 2:

He wanted me to start but this time was the same thing as above, except he uses Garchomp for 30 and he uses Cyrus` Conspiracy for things. I use my collectors and get a Mesprit and Mewtwo, and it gets set up next turn. He takes four prizes and scoops after he asked me if I was gonna play anymore Pokemon and I said no.
Good Game Edward... I held my breath for a minute to see what you got with your collectors cause I was afraid you played a Mewtwo Counter... Let’s play again soon. 8-2

----

Made it top 8, just 2 more rounds to go. I was playing Gordon, a player from the West. I heard he was one of best. I talk to Matt first and he told me what to do. At this point Curtis, Bin, and Sean advance to top 8 with me. Bidier and James tell me the sad news that they got eliminated.

= - = - =

Round 10: Gordon (PLOX)

He went for a walk or something in between the rounds and was late for my match. Only 5 more minutes till I had a game win... he shows up oh well I guess I have to play him.

Game1:

My first mirror match in a long time. Ive never ran into one until now and I was excited. I start with Mewtwo and Ralts, and he starts with Spiritomb and Baltoy. After a 1 or 2 turns he sets up a Gardy with Expert Belt and takes the first prize. I set up my Gallade a few turns later and Psychic cut for 3 prizes... wait what, I did 120... NOOOO... his Gardy has 130 with a Belt... im a nub...=( ... he hits for 110 and I Psychic cut him again for the KO. He retaliates with a Gardy and wins the game a few turns later.

Game2:

I decide he should start and we start with the same Pokemon from last game. I set up a Gardy before him but I draw no energies. 2 Turns later he sets up a Gardy and starts locking me... I don’t get set up and he takes all 6 prizes on me.
Good Game Gordan... You could’ve been like 20 minutes late but you still whooped me =)... LOL Hopefully you go to Worlds and Represent Canada well. I look forward for a rematch with you.

----

So thats it... I guess I kicked myself pretty hard for not flipping over one more prize. I chilled and relaxed for a game or two and grab some drinks while we wait for my friend Curtis who was the only one to advance into top 4. Gordon decides to stick around instead of go for walk in between his matches *good thinking =P. We still had a long day ahead of us because the Ugly Cup was tomorrow and we had to make last minute deck again :(. Thanks for reading, if read all of it... thanks for even looking at it, I appreciate that you even took the time to look at it.

• Top 8 – Myself, Bin, Sean, Zach L, and AMU guy =).

You listed 5 people at Top 8, thats not even possible lol.
I was Top 16... Stupid people playing PLOX w/ Mewtwo...

Good job though. Grind your way into worlds and Represent Canada & Team Lucario well!!!
I don't know how you avoided a mirror match until Top8, GG was everywhere

WTH is Team Lucario???

Nice job on T8 (2nd T8 in a row!). I didn't really know you last year, but based on your standings I'd say that you've gotten a lot better, and it's always a challenging game against you. You (along with Matt) showed me that Kingdra was far from the play at BRs lol

Mewtwo was an excellent call, btw (as you found out).

Ahh where has My summer gone :O

Came out of no-where and did decent at Prov, missed regs and now Nats :(

Work sucks.. But congrats, to all of you too!

Nice report, SSUs eh? sounds familiar ;) but a few other things are new. You should send me your list.

Also, do you guys still meet every now-and-then? If so let me know, and Ill see if I can fit it in :D

Cheers

@ julian - it was a pleasure to meet you, i hope to see u at worlds or if u cant make it, next week for sure

This is my first report, so I guess I should start with an introduction: My name is Curtis Lyon, I’ve been playing for 2 ½ years and I play out of Ontario Canada. My experience through Pokémon thus far has been filled with a lot of consistent finishes. I’ve won a bunch of battle roads and cities but a win in a big tournament has always evaded me. Last year was a rough year for me because it came in the form of a lack luster whiff in grinders in San Diego. This year has been my strongest yet, and the nationals was icing on the cake.

This Report is long, but I want to help recreate exactly what I went through every step of the way during this national tournament process.

I want to start by saying I owe all my results and appreciation to the people that helped me make it possible. My friends Geneses, Matthew, Bidier and Juan are main reason I enjoy playing this game. The play testing and help these guys offer me is irreplaceable. I’m the youngest member of this group so a lot of these guys and PTO’s (Marvin and Paul) keep me inspired. The point of me mentioning this is because for a long time before nats I tested a deck involving gyrados + machamp. When bidier arrived he began convincing me that kingdra + machamp was a better/safer play. A week before nationals I had my heart set on Jumpluff + AMU or Kingdra Champ. But the day before nationals a couple of people I lend cards too really wanted to play kingdra variants. That left me with jumpluff AMU, however the night before the big day I play tested with Matthew and bidier extensively. My results were that jumpluffs matchup vs. sp just wasn’t good enough to enter a tournament like nationals with. Studying the format it was just too “rock-paper-scissors” oriented, certain decks can’t beat certain decks. With this being said I wanted to play something safe. A deck that fits these criteria is something like dialgachomp or plox, with no unwinnable bad matchups and no overly good matchups. After the US nats results were posted I was expecting 30% luxchomps, 30% sabelocks, 15% kingdras, 15% jumpluffs and 10% random. Bidier presented me and Matthew with a newer version of Plox more focused around preserving the gardevoir alive as long as possible while continuously cycling through locks by any means necessary. We decided it was the best version of the deck to play not necessarily in the mirror but in an unpredictable Meta. After some late minute changes (azelf X , moonlights and warp points) I finally went to sleep ….at 6:30.

At 9:00 we met up with geneses, junior and princess and headed to the hotel for a long day of Pokémon. We arrive at the venue and register pronto. A lot of the people I was excited about seeing weren’t there (Willy ,Connor , etc.) people who I became friends with after San Diego and Last Nationals. However there were still plenty of people I was excited to see. The final numbers come up and we are told that masters get a top 32 cut. This gave me a little boost knowing I could go X-2 and hypothetically make it in.

I’m running on 4 hours of sleep in 2 days, so I apologize in advance, I tried to recap the matches to the best of my memory:
Lets get on to the report … finally :

Okay Okay

I think it's more important that we couldn't keep the Ugly Cup within the family:frown:. A annual event, 3 years in the making and two of them being won by Me and Koo. Losing it this year wasn't even about the free trips, it was way more important than that, it broke tradition.

I love how my BIG loaf of bread made you props hahaha. What about my Coke Water and Orange juice? Or my chips? Can you not Count...? HAD TO  Me and Junior had the time of our lives, and Junior couldn't have said it better himself, even if we lost, the deck made us happy, and if we went 1-X rahter than X-1, we'd still be be annoying as heck. By the way I top'ed 32 as well... I made it VERY clear were you made the mistake but I guess everyone got shafted a spot in your head since for like 3 days you though Curtis was top 8 rather than top 4.

Congratulations on your GREAT finish, and though it wasn't announced that you were part of Team Lucario, We always knew you were gonna be a part of it since the get go, I'm very proud of your progress and speaking on my part, I'm happy with you on the team!
