A new game start up rule

I was playing with some of our Pokemon players in the area and SP is big here and we said that a start up rule needs to happen so no one can do anything for 1 full round or allow people to do and play what they want on the first time because SPs are too powerful to let go second.

So, with the way the game is going, should a start up or set up rule should be made to make it fair to the person who goes first who can't do anything? What do you think?

I think the only rule that would really work is that neither play could play trainers on their first turn. Maybe neither player could attack.

I'm not in favor of a change, though. Besides, if that change would made, people would just say that it's not fair to be able to go first, because then you get to use trainers, or attack, or whatever first, y'know?

I think it's fine, but I'm interested in hearing other people's opinions. Good thread!

it depends on the deck. i dont think they should make a rule for that. some decks actually benefit form going first.

The only thing I would change is that the player to go first can use a support but not any trainers or stadiums.

the person who goes first gets the energy advantage for the rest of the game. So they really get a big advantage even without the trianers.

not rly, with sp decks running around and flints going with them they go second and get 2 energy in one turn, who has the energy advantage now?

i mean i think person going first should be allowed trainers supporters and stadiums t1, they jut shouldnt be able to attack.

i remember in this game when going first was good, now its a nightmare...

Yeah I agree. They need to fix the start up rules because going first with all the SP decks around means no one can win if they don't play SP.

Like turn 1 is I draw a card and attach a energy, if I have one and thats it. Turn 2 is they draw, play supporter, setup trainers and drawing trainers and attach for the most part 2 energy and what do you have. or 2 Basic Pokemon having to deal with a SP dealing about 40 or 50 damage. Something needs to fix.

Totally agree. Does anybody actually hope the opening flip goes their way? I breathe a sigh of relief when I lose it. And that's just not right.

1) You should be able to choose whether or not you go first after winning the dice roll

2) Neither player can attack on the opening turn

I was going for either both players draw first, and play not Trainer, Stadiums or Supporter and not attack for one full round or just allow us to play normal turns.

I don't think its the rules or the new cards that have lead to this donk heavy era. From everything I have seen its poor deck building that has been responsible. How many lists have you seen running 7-8 basics? I've seen lots. And when that deck mulligan's, heck yes your opponent may have drawn the 1 extra card they need to show your face in the donk dirt. The sensible count is 12 and up, with ample supporters, trainers, and call energy. If you want to have a fighting chance you need a reliable way of ending your first turn with more than 1 pokemon on the field. End of story.

Yeah, your right but, you have no control what you draw in your starting hand. I've had decks with 17 basic and only had 2 in hand. They can atleast give us 1 free muligan, basics in hand or not. The games start up rules are so bad right now to where its who goes second. Thats the factor that sets the game in the persons favor who went second. Yeah the person who went first has the energy advantage but with all the SP decks out, they get everything that comes with going second and SP deck owners choose to go second when they win the coin flip. They attach 2 energies and knock out your basic when all you could do was play basic and attach a energy. So not only did you lose a basic, you also lost a energy card so you got set back like 2 turns in 1.

I for one don't like going first and ending my turn and my opponent saying that game when I end my 'first' turn. I mean, this is Pokemon, not Yu-Gi-Oh. Not even Magic is that bad. The Pokemon SP ruined the game. I liked Pokemon when it was fun. Now its just who gets Machamp or a big hitting SP first.

I love going first if I have a call in hand (semi-often if you play 4). It gives me the first attachment AND allows my guys to be benched a 'turn sooner'.

Having the first attachment is very underrated.

^ The only problem with that is we know all too well what happens if you go first and don't have more than one extra basic/Call Energy, and your opponent happens to have Machop/Candy/Champ/Energy. :(
