Abilities and Weakness/Resistance

My son and I are unsure of the dynamics on abilities and damage with respect to weakness and resistance. He was using Tyrogue’s Bratty Kick against my psychic pokemon. My pokemon has a -30 resistance to fighting so I think it should result in 0 damage. My son says it’s an ability and not an attack so therefore the damage goes through. I can find no rulings that support either side. I am new to the game and he has been playing for a few years so I’m deferring to his knowledge. That said, a ruling either way would be helpful. If this has been discussed in the forums it’s in a place I can’t find so sny help is appreciated. Thank you.

Welcome to the game!
Weakness and Resistance apply to Damage done from an attack.
W&R are not applied to Attacks that "place" damage counters

W&R do not apply to Bratty Kick for several reasons - it's an Ability that is putting damage. The Ability's "put" is similar to an Attack's "place" - it is not considered direct Damage. Plus it is an Ability, and Abilities usually have all their limitations printed, so if W&R were to apply, it would be printed on the Ability.
