Always Wear A Helmet.

Today I was going for a ride on my bike. I hadn't been on a bike in about 2 years before yesterday, when I pumped up and cleaned my old one. I was going down a long hill. Not too steep, but there's a sharp turn and the street makes one big "V."

I cut around the corner probably a lot faster than I should have. I get on the sidewalk to complete the turn, but I still have control ...until I hit a 5 inch dip in the sidewalk which I couldn't see from where I was. My front tire bounces up and lands in the long strip of vegetation between the sidewalk and the street, and I couldn't steer. I look ahead and there's a tree... So I just pull the brakes and close my eyes.

A few seconds later, I'm on the ground, and my bike is against the tree, with the seat turned 45 degrees to the right. It takes me a little bit to get up, but I do and I check myself. Bruised leg, and lots of scrapes on my hands, neck and left shoulder. Then I take off my helmet and notice the dent in it, which made me realize I would have probably woke up in a hospital if I hadn't been wearing one.

Here are two photos of the aftermath.

The Helmet,

And my scrapes.

So remember kids, safety first. No, really, it's important. If you've been in any kind of accident, you know how fast it happens.

I ride my BIKE to school everytime my mom gets mad at me and refuses to take me (which is often), and I NEVER wear a helmet. On Friday, I rode my bike to the community center for our AP US test, and as I was trying to ride into the bike rack, I was waving at some friends who were standing in the Junior class line (waiting to get in to the community center) waving at me, and I didn't see the curb up ahead. I smashed right into it, got my sandle caught in the wheel, cut my ankle, and half way fell off the bike [in front of everyone :(]. My finger had a layer of skin cut off, but it was fun peeling off afterwards.

I never hit my head, I just get hurt everywhere else. But now, I think I should wear one.

Wow, WPM, like the exact same thing happened to me! (except I broke my collarbone)

I was on holidays, riding around the caravan park on my bike, wearing thongs, when my foot slipped forwards off the pedal and got caught in the front wheel. The wheel jammed into my foot and I flew over the handlebars, flipping and landing on my left shoulder, breaking the collarbone.

I was not wearing a helmet at the time, and I was very lucky to not land on my head.

Wear a helmet!

Geez, if that doesn't say I have been brainwashed these past few weeks by all these freakin tests and all this studying, I don't know what does.

Make sure you get a NEW helmet, Alex...the old one's no good anymore after an impact like that!

Best wishes for a quick recovery.

'mom

Don't worry, Hot_Carl, I don't think this was your fault. Judging by the shape of those scrapes, it looks more likely that the tree reached out and grabbed you.

Hope you saved a pokéball and a Squirt Bottle!

i was riding a bike once and was waving to a friend. i did not see the fire hydrant right in front of me and i slammed into it. the impact sent me forward and with such force that i smashed my head into the handle bars. thank G-D for my helmet

Well, last year tomorrow, I had an accident on my bike.
The funny thing was, I wasn't wearing a helmet...
I was backed over by a Dodge Ram, and was thrown off my bike, which then landed on me.
I had so much stuff in my pockets...
I think my GBA cushioned my fall.
It still works...
Nothing happened to my head.
Just my leg.
Chuck was actually standing on the pegs.

I believe is was God's way of saying 'don't steal', because earlier, my friend stole something for the first time ever.
I didn't want to get involved, so I just said 'do whatever.'
Later that day, he returned it.

Man, my friend got to sit in the front seat of the ambulance!!!

Whoops, I made this seem like it was all about me.
but, yeah, jeez.
when you live in such a slopy place, wear a helmet.
THat frikin sucks, you must be so sore.
Well, good thing you didn't go to the hospital like I did.

Thats why I wear my Replica Jan Ullrich T-Mobile* helmet.

Why'd you just decide after two years to go for a bike ride?

cause bike riding is fun.
then you'd have to wonder why i decided to play pokemon al the sudden from 6 years ago.

I rode my bike all the time this year, always wearing either my helmet or my "N" hard hat (the latter only to sporting events). Unfortunately, on Friday the 13+((sqrt)(225)), I found that my bike vanished from the rack. I suppose that the lock jarred itself loose or something. I'll probably have to get a new one, because it's been 10 days and I haven't gotten a response from the police department (I reported right after class when I found nothing where I parked the bike...)

TRUK - Thanks. Seeya there. :D

WPM - Good idea.

POLOP - You were really lucky you didn't land on your head. Broken collarbone must still really suck, but it could have been much worse.

The Fat Kid - You know it.

Doreen - Yeah, I don't plan on going out for a ride until the bruise on my leg heals up anyway.

Dunjohn - Great Balls would be better suited for a Sudowoodo.

Absoltrainer - I hit a fire hydrant once too. I swerved to avoid a car and hit it dead on. I flew right off and did an akwardly angled front flip over the handlebars and landed flat on my back. But I landed on grass, so I walked it off with little to no injury.

eI_at10s - Ouch, dude. I had my cell phone on me in case I needed to call an ambulance, but I didn't hear a snap and I could walk, so I knew there was no need. It's nice to know that Gameboys make good airbags too. ;p

Poliwag - Because it's good exercise, a good way to get around and just generally fun.

Thanks, everyone. My neck hurts, but aside from that I feel fine.

wow, this is one of those times i am thankfull i am lazy. go me!i have no bad bike stories!woot!
