Green Brook girl among best Pokemon card players in United States

Nadia Bokhari, a 10-year-old from Green Brook, put her Pokemon card trading skills to the test recently at the sixth annual Pokemon Trading Card Game National Championships in St. Louis, achieving a top-8 ranking for her age group.

Held June 27-28 inside the America's Center convention complex, the tournament saw more than 1,200 of the nation's top players pitted against one another in a fierce two-day competition.
As the only female competitor in the tournament's top 8, Bokhari is believed to be the best female Pokemon Trading Card Game player in the United States.

"It feels good, pretty cool," Bokhari said via telephone on July 6 about her achievement.
Her secret for victory, she said, is "trying hard" and "having fun."

"I'm very relaxed when I play, but when there are a lot of judges around, I feel a little pressured," said Bokhari, noting that she hones her skills by playing 3 hours at a sitting, 5 times a week, usually with her brothers, one of whom first encouraged her to play. "I practice a lot and I try different strategies."
By ranking so highly in St. Louis, Bokhari has earned an invitation to compete for the title of world champion at the elite Pokemon TCG World Championships to be held August 13-15 in San Diego. First place winners will receive a world champion trophy, a scholarship award worth $7,500 plus other prizes.
"Nadia is very proud," said Bokhari's mother, Debbie Bokhari, also via telephone on July 6.
She added that Nadia's grandparents and aunt also encourage her daughter and accompany her to local and national competitions, including the tournament in St. Louis.
"They enjoy what their grandchildren enjoy, but my parents don't play, they just watch," Debbie Bokhari said.
Pokemon TCG is a collectible card game based on the Pokemon video game series first introduced in Japan in October 1996, then North America in December 1998. Upon its American release, Pokemon immediately became a highly sought-after card game.

All I got to say is, Nadia, North East is very proud of you and your two brothers. It's amazing how you all grinded in last year, I suspect you'll do amazing at Worlds this year. Congrats!

Nadia got T8? Congrats to her. These newspaper articles are great publicity. I know you have no idea who I am, Nadia. I'm the guy who beat you in the finals of a BR last season. I'll say again, I'm amazed.

Nadia is a wonderful girl and all of us in New Jersey are very proud of her. All the Bokhari kids are strong competitors and have a great spirit of the game.

Neato.

Way to go Nadia and her bros. I've heard their names mentioned every now and then. That's a pretty sweet achievement + article. =D

Yay Nadia! I hope I get to play you sometime soon. It would be a pleasure to get slaughtered by you.

It was good to see some recognition of her grandmother's efforts in supporting her grandchildren. She certainly puts in the hours!

and i thought it was cool to get in the newspaper about citys :p, but i never got in because of regionals :(

That should be on MLG news. So other video gamers should be more aware about the Pokemon TCG game.
