Pokémon TCG: Sword and Shield—Brilliant Stars

Are there any MUST HAVE cards you would recommend getting in bulk?

I don't really know if this is the right place to put this topic, and I've tried to find if a similar thread already exists, but I couldn't, and otherwise I apologize for being blind!

Anyhow I've been a casual collecter for a while now, focusing on the old sets. But now I feel like I wanna give playing the TCG a chance again! (Haven't been playing since 99-01 back in the days.)

So I was wondering if there are some cards that you guys feel are a ~must have~ or something like that, that might be good to get in bulk. From the BW sets or the HGSS sets.

Well HGSS all up to Call of Legends are now rotated so apart from reprints, you probably won't want anything from there.
Off the top of my head there's:
Professor Juniper (BW Base, Dark Explorers)
Cheren (Emerging Powers, Dark Explorers)
N (Noble Victories, Dark Explorers)
Bianca (Emerging Powers)
Level Ball (Next Destinies)
Ultra Ball (Dark Explorers)
Pokémon Communication (HGSS Base, BW Base)
Random Receiver (Dark Explorers)
Pokémon Catcher (Emerging Powers, Dark Explorers)
Switch (HGSS Base, BW Base)
Super Rod (Noble Victoires)

You'll find almost all of those in pretty much every deck.
Here are a few others that aren't played in every deck, but can be played in a lot:
Heavy Ball (Next Destinies)
Max Potion (Emerging Powers)
Dark Patch (Dark Explorers)
Rare Candy (HGSS: Unleashed, Dark Explorers)
Eviolite (Noble Victories)
Tool Scrapper (Dragons Exalted)
Super Scoop Up (BW Base)
Energy Switch (BW Base)
Potion (BW Base)
Plus Power (BW Base)
Crushing Hammer (Emerging Powers)
Enhanced Hammer (Dark Explorers)
Skyarrow Bridge (Next Destinies)
Dark Claw (Dark Explorers)

As for the Pokémon, here are some listed below. Some listed might not be played in every deck but are seen in very common and extremely effective competitive decks.
Mewtwo EX (Next Destinies, Tin Promo)
Terrakion (Noble Victories)
Darkrai EX (Dark Explorers, Tin promo)
Rayquaza EX (Dragons Exalted, Tin promo)
Eelektrik (Noble Victories)
Hydreigon (Dragons Exalted)
Sableye (Dark Explorers)
Emolga (Dragons Exalted)
Garchomp (Dragons Exalted)
Altaria (Dragons Exalted)
Zekrom (BW Base, Tin Promo, Nest Destinies, Theme Deck, Box Promo)

Edit: Forgot the Energies >_<
Double Colorless Energy (HGSS Base, Next Destinies)
Prism Energy (Next Destinies)
Blend Energy (Dragons Exalted)

About Blend Energy, there are two different types of it. One that supplies Lightning, Water, Metal and Fighting. The other supplies Dark, Grass, Psychic and Fire. Both types are used so don't worry about deciding which ones to get, if you are getting any.

Also, just in case you didn't know, you can use cards in tournaments that have been reprinted. For example, Double Colorless Energy was reprinted in Next Destinies, which is legal. Because of this, I can use my Base Set 'DCE's in tournaments because that same card it legal. This can also apply to thing like Rare Candy from older sets.

Assuming you are planning to play in tournaments....

The current format is BW-on, so HGSS-Call of legends can't be played in tournaments.

I reccomend you get 4 of each Trainer (Item, Supporter and Stadium), 4 of each special energy currently in the format, and 15-20 of each Basic energy. Do this and you will have most of the cards to build whatever deck you want for a tournament, you then only have to figure out what Pokemon you are going to play. then pick your trainers/energies based on the Pokemon in the deck and amount of space left.

If you plan on having mutiple decks build at once proxy for non-tournament play or get more playsets of what I listed above.

Wow thanks guys this is super helpful!

And I know the HGSS sets are rotated out, but I just love the cards so much so I still want to play it a little. We're a bunch of friends playing together, and I don't think I'll be playing in any real tournaments anytime soon haha. But these are great tips! I think I'll see if I can order the trainer cards somewhere fairly cheap and start from there.

So considering that, I'm of course also interested in HGSS set recommendations.
