AZ States Report, Featuring An Interesting Deck Choice

Now that I'm done stewing about not doing so well yesterday, I guess I'll post a report.

So the night before I was planning on playing Mr. Mime/Donphan/Absol, but it just wasn't working out like I wanted it to...the G&G matchup was awful. So after some thinking I decided to play...

...Ho-Oh/Togekiss. Why? Everything has fighting resistance except for Togepi, Ho-Oh one-shots everything except Wailord with the right energy, and if you're decent at flipping heads it's amazing (which I kind of am). So I tested it a little and noticed that Cess Crystal just kills it. After thinking for a while, I decided that Pachirisu might be OK to throw in as a starter and to get rid of Cess (OMG yes, another use for Pachi). I can't remember the exact list I used, but it wasn't all that great.

On to the tournament!

Round 1: Sam w/ water.dec (Kyogre ex, Swampert, maybe some Empoleon)
I Rare Candy to Kiss turn 2 and get 5 or six energy on Ho-Oh. He manages to get one Kyogre ex charged up to take a prize, but I flipped heads on Phx Turn.
1-0

During this game, there was a judge that kept walking by our table. He later came up to me to tell me how much he loved my deck.

Round 2: Rus w/ Blissey/Weavile/Darkrai
This matchup made me so angry! I easily could have won this one if it wasn't for ONE misplay. He had a lone Darkrai start, I had Togepi active Ho-Oh bench I think. I get a turn 3 or 4 benched Kiss to Ho-Oh with 3 energy and 1 in hand. However, I still have an active Togepi with one energy on it. I decide to leave it there for one turn and attach to my benched Ho-oh and use Yawn on his now Lv. X Darkrai, and then it stayed asleep during his turn. On my turn, I didn't get the extra energy to KO his Darkrai, so instead of trying to hit his Darkrai for 80, I leave my Togepi active and fail my Find a Friend flip. After this it gets kinda hazy, but I go up in prizes 5-1, including one-hitting a Blissey after he tried to one-hit my Ho-Oh with 6 energy. I think that was the last prize I took. After this, he finally finds another energy to attach to his Lv. X, then sends it up against Ho-Oh (really good play because Phx Turn doesn't activate when KO'd by effects). It all goes downhill from here. Darkrai took all of his remaining prizes.
1-1

After I finished this game, another judge came up to me to tell me he loved my deck. Hmm...

Round 3: Girl (forgot your name, sorry!) w/ G&G/Furret
This is the other matchup that made me really upset. It started out pretty bad for me...she got an early Gardy and Psychic Locked me for a couple of turns, knocking out a Pachi and a Togepi I think. But then she made a big mistake and leveled up to Bring Down a benched Togepi. I had been charging my Ho-Oh for a couple of turns and had 3 types on it, and I had RC+Kiss in hand, so I went for it and got the other 4 I needed to knock it out. *sigh*. I basically had this game in the bag after that going up by three prizes, then she randomly plays a Warp Point. My active is Ho-Oh with some energy, and my bench is Togekiss with 3 energy, Togekiss with no energy, Ho-Oh with no energy and Togepi with no energy. The correct play would have been to send up the Kiss with the energy so I could just retreat and send Ho-Oh back up. But what did I do? I sent up the Kiss with no energy. I was hoping to topdeck an energy, but it didn't come for 5 turns, which included 2 RC and a Night Maintenance. I finally topdecked the energy, attached and retreated to KO her Furret, but it was already too late...she had been using Keen Eye for about 4 turns already. She eventually pulls out the win with Gallade.
1-2

At this point I was just so frustrated. I had both of those games in the bag, but I only made 1 misplay in each of them, while they both made more bad plays than me (Rus grabbed a Sneasel with a Celio's when he had Mentor in hand, the girl made like 10 misplays during the game that I can't even remember). And I basically knew that there was no way I would make it into the top cut, but it was slightly possible if I got good tiebreaks.

Round 4: Alex w/ Porygon-Z/Magneton/Smeargle
This was a fairly easy game which involved some handy usage of Togekiss' attack. The thing that I don't like about his deck is that it loses on it's flips; had he discarded the right energy and got one more heads, he probably would have had that game. I almost made a bad decision on another Warp Point, but it ended up not making a difference.
2-2

I get kind of excited...I jump from 24th place to 16th place! So hopefully if I get an opponent with a much higher ranking than me, I could get in!

Final Round: Other Girl (forgot your name too, sorry!) with GG/Furret
...unfortunately there was no way she was higher ranked than me, and sure enough I got paired down (which made no sense because there was an even number of players). Anyways...her list was pretty bad. She played PK Gardy instead of SW (I think), among other things. I don't really remember this match much, but I do know that she leveled up way too early and used Bring Down on Togepi (why do n00bs do this?). I responded with a KO and had control for the rest of the game. She even used Psy Shadow once so she could do more damage, but I didn't have 5 energy to do 100.
3-2

So all in all I think the deck did fairly well for being such an odd-ball. I probably would play this again with a better list, including more energy (I ran 22 but I still got Kisses with less than 3).

Props and slops time!
