Balancing out the First Turn

So through my testing I found going first to be absolutely dominate since there is absolutely no restrictions on it what so ever. And after read tournament reports from Canada this only backed up what my testing had already told me. Am I the only one that thinks this needs to be dealt with before Worlds? My idea would be...

The player going first can play supporters but not trainers, the player going second can play anything.

Thoughts? Any other suggestions?

I think both RS and DP rules have been fair. I would rather see cant-play-supporters than cant-play-items (goods). No chance of it being changed until Japan changes it in my eyes (so not until Gen 3 remakes at least), even less in time for Worlds.

If Canada Nats showed anything, its that you shouldnt play Babies. And if you do, be prepared to get donked 1-2 times.

How about the player going first can't play supporters, stadiums or trainers on his/her first turn?

The old system wasn't broken. Then they tried to fix it.

Now, instead of going second normally being better but being a double edged sword, going first is _always_ better except in very very rare circumstances... ESPECIALLY if your opponent plays judge T1.

At LEAST they need to remove being able to play supporters T1. With everyone and their mother playing cleffa or another starter, being first won't matter as much.

The player going first can still use things like Pokemon Collector which still can get Tyrogue for a T1 donk or get its basics and a Cleffa to continue setting up. Trainers don't matter too much on the first turn for this format because a lot of the trainers right now are what I consider to be "aggro" trainers. Rare Candy can't be played turn one anyways so that's not restricted, Pokemon Reversal is usually only useful after you setup an attacker and I can almost guarantee you that'll be after turn one.

Lunar: Your opponent can't play Pokemon Communication to get the Tyrogue or Switch to get there active out of the active spot. Its basically Supporter and attack. Also they can't Plus Power multiple times for KO, read Sebastions report. I'm not saying its perfect simply better than we have.

We obviously need some change but I think this is something thatz has to come from japan so I guess theres nothing we can do...

I think not allowing the player to attack on the first turn is the best option, or have best 2/3 games where the player who went first the previous game now plays second.

Neither players pokemon can deal damage (or special conditions and damage counters) on their own first turn. That still leaves things like eek and cff in the format but removes first turn donks as well as giving both players a turn to setup before damage can be done.

I think that a restriction of "the first turn player cannot deal damage through attacks" would be sufficient. Other effects of attacks still occur, such as Cleffa's Eeeeeeek, Tyrogue being asleep, or effects like "Call for Family".

1) The player going first does not draw a card on their first turn.
2) Neither player can do damage on their first turn.

My suggestion: Winning the coin flip should be like a double mulligan. The flip loser can, if he wishes, draw 2 cards; if either of them are basic Pokemon, he may put them on his bench before the flip winner draws his first card.

How about: The player going first may not do more than 20 damage. Any attacks which do over 20 damage now only do 20 damage.

How about both players can search their deck for the Basic Pokemon they want to start with and place it as their active Pokemon? That way, we get to keep the regular rules but it allows the players to add a little bit of skill to the start of the game.

I would go back to the old system where they can't play trainers or supporters going first. It used to be a big advantage for the player going 2nd because they could BTS+evolve, Cyrus+gain, or Candy+evolve turn 1 and run you over, but since BTS and Cyrus/Gain rotated and Candy got nerfed, being allowed to do everything going 2nd doesnt give you an unfair edge anymore.

Right now going first is too big of a deal and it needs to be fixed.

This idea has a lot of good things to it, but would absolutely not work. This promotes donk-capable basics and makes it easy to tech them. It also gets rid of a lot of deck building skill, not having to balance the number of cards liek Pachirisu, Shaymin and Jirachi played to not start with them.

And, as everything that Pokemon does seems to do as of late, it supports Zekrom too much -_-

way to much manipulation. it would allow players to start with any card they seem beneficial to their opening hand

We'll find out how well that works with the Professor Cup, as it is identical to the "I choose you!" rule. However, in your post you do not mention drawing 6 cards versus 7.
