California States - Longbeach

So its been said that the CA state championship will be in Longbeach on the Queen Mary. I'll be going there with some other friends from our league. We are from Fresno CA so it will be around a 4-5 hour drive. Has anyone played this tourny before?....if so what time did it start? Our original plan was to drive there Friday and get a hotel because we figured it would start early. Nobody really wants to wake up that early and drive there only to jump right into......im guessing (6+ hour) tourny and be totally exhausted. But it seems not everyone will be able to have the money for a hotel and gas so if the tourny started maybe in the afternoon then we wouldnt need a hotel. Does anyone know how early these tournys start?

Also, if anyone else is traveling there how are you planning your trip? Thankz!!

They usually start between 9 AM and 11 AM. If it started in the afternoon the event wouldn't be over until, I don't know, 2 or 3 AM.

last year CA states registration began at 8:30 am, and the tourney itself (masters finals) didn't end until well after midnight. if you're driving from fresno i'd strongly suggest staying both the night before AND the night of the event.

Wow I never been to a states, but i didnt expect this! We've been under preparing. I would definately want to stay both nights, but since im the driver Im pretty much laying down the rules. I would hate to put my friends in a tight money situation, resulting in them not being able to go. I guess well have to figure something out.

swiss rounds, and junior/senior finals end earlier than the masters.

but if you're playing in masters be warned: you're looking at easily a 14+ hour day from registration to top cut finals. add in a 4+ hour each way drive and for safety's sake you should be planning on staying overnight unless you have several drivers who can take turns while the others sleep.

I like the idea of staying but I think the others will want to take turns driving. Actually I think only one other person has a license. Thanks everyone for all the help. I will see you in TOP CUT!

I will ditto on what Pokemom said, as I went to Long Beach for regionals last year from Vegas, We ccame up a day before, and stayed that night. I guarantee that it is next to impossible to stay driving for that amount of time, after being up and awake watching/playing Pokemon with not a full nights rest.

Heck, a two hour drive isn't all that exciting and fun after a long (yet fun) day like that lol.

Let's sleep in the car :p I'll see if my mom or dad have any sort of discounts available for our use...

I can drive too, if necessary. I lose so much, I'll probably only get tired from waiting for my next match :p

being bubbled out of top cut and then having a long drive home is even less fun

may i suggest either being a great player or sucking enough to not have it be a problem

Damn, thats a long way. I'm checking it out for Sac., 6 1/2 hours with clear roads. Has ever been more central in the state like Fresno, or a different city like San Jose or Frisco? I know that Nor Cal regionals are in San Jose (Sunnyvale) but it seems like a tourny this significant should be in a central area in the state. Even for players from Reno and Vegas it would be fairly easy.
