Pokémon TCG: Sword and Shield—Brilliant Stars

Can Gengar be stopped?

Gengar is like the swine flu. It's been around for a while but now everyone is freaking out about it. Sure Mother Gengar and other varients are ripping up the tournament scene. But there are ways around it. It's all in how you play in the moment.

I have a compleate Gengar line just sitting in my binder. Sure I could play Gengar...play the same old stuff over and over again...have no real fun. Or I could play good ole' T-tar another star of SF. Have closer games, force myself to think.

I admire your spirit but u gotta play 2 have fun. I dont know about u, but i have fun when i win. And BTW t tar doesnt have a bad gengar machup.

Indeed T-tar does not have a bad matchup. Hence why I play it over say Machamp for example. Sure winning is great, but if I can't play with the cards I like then I can't have fun. I just don't trust that shifty purple ghost.

The ways around it are very hard now, it's almost near impossible knocking out a Gengar without activating Fainting Spell against a skilled Gengar player. I don't think Gengar is like the "swine flu". SP decks are running rampant as well.

Glaceon X might fair well against Gengar, as it shuts off fainting spell. Then just unown g your claydols and rid your hand of trainers. Not that hard. Too bad Glaceon sucks against everything else.

^Correction, Gengar/Nidoqueen is the BDIF. A smart Gengar player (like myself) can play throughout alot of situations easy or hard. Gengar takes a while to master but, when you do master it, it becomes very good.

The problem with Gengar is that it relies on your opponent. If your opponent can play around it, they can lock you out of doing serious damage. Lists with Nidoqueen minimize this.

Fainting Spell only works 50% of the time, even when it is triggered. From the way some people talk, you would think it was guaranteed.

If your opponent Guards the bench and cycles out Trainers, it's tough for the Gengar player to get any KOs without it. If the coin flips don't go your way, it's a struggle, and that is Gengar's biggest weakness. Opponents will try and play around Fainting Spell, but if they can't, they will just plan for the worst case scenario of a double KO.

Not saying Gengar isn't good, cos I think it is, but it is nowhere near unbeatable, especially if it misses the coin flips.

Baby Mario I am well aware of the flip, believe me. But say you KO 3 Gengars in a game. Thats probably 1-2 prizes. Fainting spell ( although it only works 50% of the time) can win games.

Its probably 0-1 to prizes, most people know how to get around Fainting spell. Yea you can master how to play Gengar, but don't forget people know how to master decks around that matchup.

Gengar is only devastating because of its power, otherwise it wouldn't be so great.

Even if you do get 1-2 Prizes, it isn't always easy to get the others if they Unown G the Bench and cycle Trainers out of the hand. That assumes that they can't KO Gengat with Bats/Status Conditions/Devoluter/Uxie etc. People are expecting Gengar now (unlike at States), and they will have strategies for it (like the Blaziken tech in some Kingdra).

I know Gengar has Nidoqueen, but that doesn't make it invincible (see Dialga G LV X, and various other things).

Like I said, it is a good deck that is tough to play against, but people are getting carried away thinking that it near-autowins everything.

They overhyped Mother Gengar sooo much during Battle Roads that eveyone and their mama have come up with counters to play around it. I think it is unplayable at this point due to this fact. There is no suprise factor, and everyone will see it comming. Gengar players beware. The rest of the format will eat you alive.

This discussion is over.

i can take it down easily with my Glaceon/leafeon lv x deck just damage the gengar with leafeon lv x then retreat for free with umbreons body then glaceon lv x comes and does the finishing blow or use dusknoir

Keep your goodies covered with G's, and put the hex on their Fainting flips....

Like anything, it can get beat... but it's a solid play right now....

I'm not saying that Gengar can't be worked around. As you guys know, Mother Gengar helps out a lot with the possible/probable KOs with Spc conditions and TS2. Of course, there isnt really anyway to get around an Unown G when ur playin Gengar.

And thanks Bannete X ur advice really helps.

Gengar w/ Hippowdon gets around Unown G lol!

Lol ya. I used 2 play T Tar. U can really abuse Gengar wit ur Sabyles. So in a normal game do u use spinning tail or grind? Also, watta u tech. I like Darkrai.

Back to back posts merged. The following information has been added:

I never actually thought of De-evoluter as a gengar tech. I might just have to try that out.

YA it's a big counter. One deck idea is Rampardos wit devolutors. 80 + devolutor kills like all stage ones and basics. It is a really solid counter.
