Canadian National's Top 16 Masters Report + Ugly Cup Report

I don't get out to play much during the Pokemon season due to a combination of lack of time, and lack of transportation. Due to this Nationals was only my 4th tournament of the season. I had played 3 different decks during the season.
SPT - LuxChomp (went 5-2, lost in top 16)
Regionals - CurseGar (went 4-3, missed cut)
BR - Torterra (bad, we'll leave it at that)
I didn't want to try another new deck, so I went with LuxChomp as it's the deck that Ive done best with this season. Due to the popularity of LuxChomp and SableLock @ US nats, I decided to tech Mewtwo into my deck, expecting a similar metagame. Unfortunately, I only played against 1 SP deck, so it got very little use...

There were 128 Masters (phew) so 7 Rounds with a top 32

Round 1
vs Yassine - CurseGar
I got a Luxray start, while he got Spiritomb. I get going quite quickly and take 2 prizes before he gets a Gengar set up. Once he does, he judges me, and I draw into nothing. I spend the rest of the game being locked by Spiritomb while he takes me out with Gengar. I believe I was able to take 1 more prize before it was over.
0-1 (I have lost my 1st round not at 7 straight tournaments. Have a lack of practise time really hurts me)

Round 2
vs ???? - Blastoise/Gatr
Excellent matchup up for me. I get a Luxray start to his Squirtle, with X2 weakenss (with another squirt and totidile benched), and attach the DCE for the KO. I proceed to take a prize a turn for the next 5 turns.
1-1

Round 3
vs ???? - CurseGar
He started with a Gastly. I went first and started with Ambipom G, DCE & a Crobat G. DONK.
2-1

Round 4
vs Curtis Lyon - PLOX
He started with Spiritomb against my Azelf. I was Spiritomb locked for 2 turns, then psychic locked for the rest of the game. Along with with, anytime I seemed to have a decent hand going, he Judged... Lost 6-0...
2-2

Round 5
vs ???? - CurseGar
Another CurseGar, I'm getting tired of seeing Gastly's. I started with Crobat to his Spiritomb. I get 2 garchomps set up as he builds of his Gengar. While he takes a couple prizes with Gengar, I snipe it with Garchomp twice to KO the first belted one. I start to fall behind when he's attacking with his second Gengar, but my opponent makes a key mistake. He left his Gengar active for a turn. In turn a play a large number of trainers, which allows me to get going again, kill his 2nd Gengar and win the game.
3-2

Round 6
vs Darrel - Blastoise
Almost went exactly the same as round 2. I take a prize a turn. He is able to take one prize from me as I didn't bother to Poke Turn a Crobat with 60 on it, so he his it with Wartortle's Water Arrow.
4-2

Round 7
vs Kevin Howell - Tyranitar
He starts with Spiritomb to my Luxray. Fortunately for me I already have the Level X in my hand, so I was able to play around it for a couple turns while we both set up, and I took 2 prizes (a Larvitar and the Spiritomb). He then brings up another Spiritomb, and has a belted T-Tar prime on the bench loading up energy. I was unhappy to see he 180HP BEAST, so I went to work sniping with Garchomp. Fortunately for me, after I had attacked it the first time he wiffed on an energy the next turn, so I was able to lay down 2 Crobats and KO it. He then brings up the SF T-Tar belted. I'm in trouble here, as I only have 1 DCE left in my deck, and as I ran no Claydol, no means of finding it. I have to sacrifice a prize to setup Garchomp with 2 energy. When I bring it up I hit for 80. He then Grinds me to death. A had a Garchomp on my bench, along with the Energy Gain. I top decked the DCE, played Aaron's to get back Garchomp Lv X, and take out the T-tar FTW
5-2

I had heard that a couple 5-2's might miss cut, so I'm quite worried about my first round loss. Fortunately that wasn't the case, and I finished 26th

TOP CUT

Round 8 - Top 32
vs David-John E. - LuxChomp w/ ERL
Game 1:
Finally I get to use my Mewtwo, and I know he played no counter. I go first with Garchomp (Mewtwo benched), attach a DCE and hit his Chatot for 30. He comes back with a Garchomp, DCE, Gain, and takes out my Garchomp. On my second turn, I Level Up my Mewtwo, play Roseanne's and realize that one of my 2 Psychic energy's were prized. I was now quite annoyed that I now had to waste 2 energy's to retreat Mewtwo. He takes a couple prizes in the process. I finally take a prize and draw my Psychic Energy. He is able to use Garchomp and Luxray to take it down to one prize and I only have Mewtwo left, so he scoops
1-0

Game 2:
I draw a Chatot, and no other basics, he goes 1st with Garchomp, attach DCE and attacks, i still have no basics, so he wins T2
1-1

Game 3:
I get Mewtwo out T2, but he crobat's and Dragon Rush's it before I can level up. Due to a poor hand, I'm determined to try again. I play a night maintenance, and patiently wait a couple turn to set up. After he Dragon Rushed, and had no other Garchomps on the bench, I played the Mewtwo again. This time I had 2 Spray's in my hand, prepared to stop Flash Bites. That proved to be effective, and I get Mewtwo up and PokeTurn my bench away
2-1

6-2

Round 9 - Top 16
vs Gavin B - PLOX w/ Mewtwo
Game 1:
We both get very solid starts, and I take a quick prize, despite his spiritomb. I feel like I could be in control of this game until he T3 Judge's and Psychic Locks me. I draw into complete garbage, and he continues to lock me until the end of the game.
0-1

Game 2:
He tries to get his Mewtwo out in hopes of taking the game right there.T2 he gets out Mewtwo, but I was prepared and quickly responded with a Flash Bite and Dragon Rush. After that he played an Uxie in hopes of drawing a key Bebe's, so I can't KO his Ralts with a DCE. He wiffs on the Set Up, and from that point I steamroll over the deck.
1-1

Game 3:
I get off to a fast start taking a prize T2. T3 he lays his Mewtwo down, so I put all of my efforts next turn into trying to find a way to KO it. I was unsuccessful. At this point, to be honest, I was praying for time to be called. Nope. Next turn he Level's up Mewtwo. I bring up crobat as I know he needs a turn to charge up. I attach an energy to my benched Garchomp (I had a Garchomp Lv X in my hand). Just after he starts his turn, time is called. He then charges up his Mewtwo and passes, knowing he can OHKO anything next turn. Due to an earlier Judge, I had nothing useful in my hand. So my options were to top deck a Cyrus, and get an E-gain & energy, attach and snipe his bench, or top deck a DCE and snipe his bench. I draw.... an energy.... not enough, and he takes the win.
1-2

6-3

UGLY CUP
I decided to play a 40-card LuxChomp. A really straight forward list. 2-2 Ray, 2-2 Chomp, 2 Bats, 1 Uxie. In my rush taking out 20 cards from my list the day before, I took out all my psychic energy. (Costly Mistake)

26 Masters, 5 Rounds, Cutting to Top 4

Round 1
vs Reed M - Mightyena LA
I draw a strong setup with Uxie, but I had a Crobat active and his Poochyena Cornered me. I have no Psychic Energy to try to attack with, and no PokeTurn due to Reed's ban list for the match. So I was stuck in a stalemate until I decked out... BAH!
0-1

Round 2
vs Curtis L - Regigigas
He's ban list included Power Sparys..... We were only playing 4 prizes, so Curtis played 2-2 Gigas with the Slow Start Gigas. Both of his Level X's were prized, so he never really had a chance
1-1

Round 3
vs Troy N - Mightyena/Slowking/Primape
His ban list included PokeTurn's.... I knew I shouldn't have played SP. I managed to draw a completely awesome setup and take my 4 prizes in 5 turns, mostly with Luxrays
2-1

Round 4
vs Zach L - Gallade 4
Zach ran no Cyrus's, so he included it on his ban list. Zach got no setup while I had T2 luxray X, with another Luxray ready on the bench. He managed to get the Lv X out once, but I had a spray ready. He then Scooped
3-1

Round 5
vs Forgot name - Houndoom/Shedinja
His ban list had Garchomp and PokeTurn. I thought I was doomed. I have 2 Luxray Xs up by T4, and have taken 2 prizes due to his not so great setup. he then tries to get Shedinja set up. and he had a belted Uxie active. I top deck a Uxie, and Aaron's a dead crobat from the discard, drop them both and Thrash Bolt FTW
4-1

Then I wiff cut...
BAH

Your a class act Sean, thanks for the props man :). Also way to rep top 16 with me our dream was alive until top 8 maybe next year!

sorry buddy, am really bad with names :( hope it was a joking fun slop instead of a serious one :D good seeing you guys again :p

Nice to chat with you again Sean. I finished 2nd in world cup pool, but should have been the winner. He did'nt give me the 10 pts for German win, so I lost out by 4 pts, and in winner take all, the $280 went to a guy named Rob. I felt robbed actually. To the invitees, represent us well in Hawaii. Try to go for at least a week so you can visit the sites. Volcanoes National Park is not to be missed and the beaches.

Greg C.

Im the dude you fought in first round name was Yassine =p good match btw lets do it again sometime

---------- Post added 07/12/2010 at 02:50 PM ----------

in the end i made it into top 16 to xD was a great nat with alot of cool ppl grats for making it that far to sean

Dakota - Thanks! We'll both do better next year... none of this losing in the T16 stuff

Bidier - No worries, not a serious slop. If you decide to go to Grinders look luck man, and I hope to see you in a year.

Reed - That was easily the most depressing loss I've taken in 4 years of playing... Amusing deck though :)

Greg - You should have won that pool. It's ridiculous that the 3rd place game doesn't count. World Cup is a 64 game tournament, not 63. I'd be fighting that to the death. It was nice chatting with you though. Hope to see you and Brian stick around next year.

Winston - Thanks. You won some money, try to find a way to get to Hawaii. Any means necessary! We need more skilled Canadians represented at Worlds.

Yassine - *edited* Yeah our match was good. Congrats for making top 16 as well. you had quite a solid deck! I hope to see you and the rest of the Quebec crew and Ontario Provincials and Regionals next year!

Good Jon Sean, you shouldn't doubt yourself so much. I hope you can get some more Pokeoin time next year and I will hopefully see you at cities.
