Christmas 2010 tins

http://www.theinthing.com/cgi-bin/d...OKEMON 2010 CHRISTMAS / HOLIDAY TINS (9 COUNT)

blurb said:
In each tin, you will find:

4 Pokémon TCG booster packs
2 special foil cards of the Legendary Pokémon Entei, Raikou, or Suicune, including a “Shiny” version!
A great window design for displaying your favorite card

The Volcano Pokémon Entei is ready to erupt... the Aurora Pokémon Suicune shines a light on every game... and where there’s thunder, there’s Raikou! Every Pokémon Trading Card Game Collector’s Tin adds a different kind of fun to your collection and your strategies with lots of awesome cards.
And with a Legendary Pokémon in each one, every tin is a Trainer’s best friend!

I have no idea. One of the UK distributors has bitten the dust and I was looking around for others when I came across the 2010 Christmas tins. So copied the blurb from the site and the link to the picture. Aparently they will be on sale sometime in September in the UK, yet they are called the 2010 Christmas tins. go figure.

No i don't think they have the Legends in them, by legendary they meant Entei, Raikou, Suicune cards will be the tins focus :p

Just to make sure this is clear, this is not the legends. They're some random "shiny" promos of the dogs. I'd also like to point out that the tins prior to this had prime pokemon in them... I don't see why anyone should be happy about this.

Unique promos in a tin? Many of us have been WAITING for this for a long time...

This is really super amazing from a collecting standpoint.

Not so much from a competitive standpoint.

What does that have to do with anything? They could've easily made this a promo or an addition to another set. There was still plenty of opportunities they could've put these promos in, so that collectors could still grab them. All I see is a gimic so they don't have to put the finer cards into a tin, so it'll make people buy more packs. And before anybody starts talking about how a company needs profit, they didn't have to put such garbage cards into the tins, they put plenty of sub-par Lv.Xs/primes into tins, left the better ones in the set, and that was fine. This is terrible, it is 100% aimed at collectors, and completely disregards the competitive player, where as before at least it was shared on some level. They gave them alternate arts right, and they were typically significant cards as well? Sounds fine on a collectible level to me.

Hold on, don't forget, Pokemon is not targeting competitive players or even collectors with these tins. They are targeting random kids who wander by at the mall, remember? "WHOA! LOOK AT THAT ENTEI, IT'S SHINY! MOM BUY IT!"

They've had the opportunities to put random rares that aren't playable before, but they didn't, they put fairly playable cards in there. There had to be some minute motive to target competitive players as well. They appealed to a lot more aspects of their fan base before, this only appeals to one, and there's not really any reason for it. Why not put primes in there? They're shiny, they even have art dedicated to attract the eye. Besides, tbh the shiny versions of the dogs, are pretty bland, I mean there's a lot of greys in them, seems pretty bad.

Actually, if you think about it, all of the Tin Pokemon are always very impressive - or renowned as starters, etc. The impressive Pokemon may or may not be competitive (Garchomp C X was, Darkrai X wasn't). None of the Primes (or even cards, really, except LEGENDS) in UL were all that impressive, so it makes sense to me that there are no tins. In that light shiny legends are perfect for tins.

The point of this? Getting little kids' attention.

I never said they weren't impressive, the point was that they were something that appealed to all parts of the pokemon fanbase, instead of just collectors and kids. And now they aren't for no particular reason.

Also, I don't see why the primes in this set are particularly worse than any of the other Lv.Xs they've chosen in the past.

The thing is, to 70% of the market (the collectors), these are the finer cards. Reprints were getting really tired. I mean what's the point in shelling out your hard earned for something you already have multiples of from the set you've been buying by the time corresponding tins are released? Sure, most collectors bought them, but only to fill a hole in their collection. This is a very welcome change. Now you get something new and exclusive and you get packs to possibly pull cards you are still missing from the core set or that you need for your deck. Win-win in my book!

Reprints of the same cards you get in sets have never particularly appealed to "all parts of the Pokemon fanbase". The only part of the fanbase they ever appealed to in fact were the people who only play the game.

Wait, most collectors bought them? Well then, sounds like it appeals to collectors just fine, and it appealed to competitive players as well. Also, it's something different to collect from the booster packs as well, it has an alternate art, and is part of a separate promo line. Also, if you're going to buy the tin to open the packs...then why don't you just buy the packs? Because you get some promo you know you'll never use in any way shape or form? No, these new tins has no appeal to a competitive player. It would always make more sense to buy packs or singles instead.

Except for earlier in you post, you said "most collectors bought them", also if they were to appeal to competitive players, why would they often pick sub par Lv.X's as apposed to the often better ones left in the packs? Also, I thought it was implied but I meant all parts of the pokemon tcg fanbase.

of course they are not going to put a luxray x in a tin, or uxie x. remember that its still a company, who wants to make money.

I also said that collectors bought them for the sole purpose of filling holes in their collection. They were bought somewhat grudgingly in other words. And since when are collectors not a part of the TCG fan base??? From PCI's own words they make up 70% of that fan base.

I never said that collectors weren't a part of the TCG fan base, just that they are not the entire fan base. Also, how are they buying them grudgingly? Because it helps them accomplish completing their sets, which they collect? So the solution is to instead provide cards that wouldn't be a part at all of the sets they're collecting? How does taking away the ability to acquire fairly rarer cards in place of random promos appeal more to collectors? I mean would a collector rather have a Lv.X/prime or a holo that isn't part of any particular set?
