Pokémon TCG 2009-2010 City Championships FAQ

Details subject to change.
Last update: November 16, 2009

What are Pokémon TCG City Championship Tournaments?

The Pokémon TCG City Championships are title events operated by independent Tournament Organizers, where players in each of the three POP-recognized age divisions can earn the title of City Champion! Results of the City Championships count toward your Premier Rating!

For details regarding City Championship events outside of North America, please click here.

When are the Pokémon TCG City Championships?

Pokémon TCG City Championships will be taking place between November 27th, 2009, and January 10th, 2010. To find times and locations of City Championship events in your area, click here.

Remember, while we frequently update our events schedule, we recommend that you contact the local Tournament Organizer to confirm event schedule information.

How much does the event cost?

All Pokémon Organized Play Premier events in North America are FREE! That’s right—there is no admission fee for a City Championship!

Organizers may charge for side events run at these tournaments.
What is the tournament structure?

The tournament is run using the Modified Constructed Format and Age Modified Swiss pairings.

See the Pokémon Tournament Rules for information about the Modified Format and Swiss. The number of Swiss rounds run will depend on total attendance at the event. After the Swiss rounds end, there will be a cut to Single Elimination Finals. A maximum of 8 players will advance to the Single Elimination Finals.

Please make sure you’re ready with a legal deck by reviewing the legal sets for the Modified Format here.

The City Championships series will have a K-Value of 16. For more information on how the K-Value affects your Premier Rating, please see the Ratings and Rankings FAQ.

What are the prizes?

Prizes are awarded to the top 4 players in each age division.

Our age divisions are:

Junior Division: Born 1999 or later

Senior Division: Born in 1995, 1996, 1997, or 1998

Masters Division: Born in 1994 or earlier

Participants will receive an exclusive City Championships promo card while supplies last.

Top 4 finishers in each of the three age categories receive the following prizes:

1st Place

18 Pokémon TCG booster packs
A City Champion medal
2nd Place
10 Pokémon TCG booster packs
3rd & 4th Place
4 Pokémon TCG booster packs
What do I need to know?

Bring your POP ID card, if you have one. If you don’t have a POP ID, one will be given to you at the event.
You must bring a Modified legal deck to the tournament. See section 3 of the Pokémon Tournament Formats.
See Pokémon Tournament Rules for more information about what to bring to an event.
Make sure you arrive on time. If you are late for registration, you may not be able to play in the event.
To participate in the event, you must be a player in good standing and abide by the Tournament Rules.
Local residency is not required to enter a Pokémon TCG City, State, or Regional Championship event.
See the Legal Notice for certain eligibility requirements and other information, including information concerning limitations on Pokémon’s liability.
What happens after the tournament?

After the tournament ends, the Tournament Organizer will submit the tournament results to The Pokémon Company International. Pokémon Organized Play, which sanctions the tournaments, will calculate player rankings. Pokémon Organized Play reserves the right to remove the Premier Event status of any event that is not run in accordance with Premier Event policies.

Doesn't look like much has changed but, I would love a new binder, hat, and playmat to accompany the packs/medal. I just hope we get the medals at the tournament this time. I also hope I get my Arceus Sleeves when the CC prizes come in:)

Seems like they completely stopped to distribute pins this season. But I'm interested in what Pokémon line the event promos will be this year. ^^

Maybe we still get those, but they don't list it because of differences between countries and TOs.

Yeah, that is true. I am glad the prizes are still 18 packs and the K-Value is still 16. I have a gut feeling that the Promo line may be Garchomp or Gengar *hopes*

The events can go to top 8 but only the top 4 get prizes? Why not distribute the prizes a bit more like they did with Battle Roads?

you mean like having top 4 get prizes?

Sounds the same to me. Makiung a top cut does NOT guarantee a prize. Look at Nats. T128, 64 of em didn't get anything.

That'd be terrible. Part of the draw of CCs is that first place gets HALF A BOX!

More incentive for top placing means more incentive for competition, and greater competition means more intriguing events. We don't wanna see these relegated to Battle Road status.

I have to agree with Cyrus. As much as I believe in distributing the prizes evenly, I think T4 is sufficient, considering everyone gets a promo and there are often door prizes and such. If we dilute the prize pool for Cities, they'll become Battle Roads that people attend begrudgingly.

Isn't the idea deciding the city champion/s? So yeah, having high prizes for first and second makes sense to me.
