Pokémon TCG: Sword and Shield—Brilliant Stars

Coin Flips

Qwachansey - Ok, fair enough you can explain why you lost.

But when people keep whining/talking about it, and don't do the same if they get lucky instead. . . Yeah that's what I hate.

Frankly I would feel like a jerk for telling my opponent how awesome it was I got all 4 heads and OHKOd their Gengar.

I mainly mean in reports - people look like jerks anyway if they moan about how unlucky they get.

This thread is for their own sakes anyway. I mean, they just sound like sour losers otherwise.

Bro, people complain. It's part of human nature. We complain about our sucky jobs, our horrible lives, our terrible luck, and everything else that we can come up with. It's natural, it's nothing new.

You're even doing it right now. You're being a hypocrite. I'm telling you this for your own sake, because you look like a jerk.

I once got 14 heads in a row with Oddish Stun Spore (Jungle) @ worlds 2008 Mutant draft. You'll get lucky when it doesn't count in a real tournament. Sometimes you do get lucky... Sometimes..

Extremes stick out in one's memory more, I think, is part of the problem. Couple that with some people being polite enough not to brag that they one because of a coin toss, and you get a good idea why most people don't will focus on the negative but gloss over the positive.

TCGs are all about blending skill with luck. If they weren't, you wouldn't draw from a randomized deck, ever! Your deck would be like a utility belt you grabbed your cards from. Good players know how to minimize the impact of a bad result on a coin toss decided effect and maximize the benefits of getting it right. Not as good players need to remember they are using such variable cards because it is the most reliable way to beat a more skilled player.

But it isn't reliable: I know. If someone is twice as good as I am, getting lucky is really my only hope. So when I lose because I don't get lucky, I need not to complain.

Ultimately, I think that is the real thing we need to focus on: don't complain when you lose! If it was close, congratulate your opponent and ask if they want to take a sec to see where things were going. If you really were a coin toss or lucky draw away from winning, they probably want to know in case there is something they can do to make sure you are not in that position next time!

you need to play coin flip cards expecting them to work 50% of the time. what's so hard about that? it's 50% of the serious game changing instances and 50% of the times where it doesn't really matter either way. risk and reward.

Bad luck is starting mesprit and 6 trainers after having perfect hands in HUNDREDS of games twice in a row... in top cut... at states.

I think sometimes we earn the right to complain about luck. I can understand losing on a coinflip, but have you lost to 8? I had a gyarados player hit heads on everysingle SSU and reversal in a game against me at regs. On the other hand, I can't hit a heads to save my life. (which is why I tend to avoid flippy decks)

Yes, but in life if you won the lottery you wouldn't act like normal you'd be over the moon - unlike reports.
Coin flips are cool. They're part of the game. Always have been. Get over it.
I never said they weren’t. I’m not the one you should be saying get over it to.

Ok, I don’t mind as much if they’re honest if they get lucky too. Like if you were the Gyarados player and got 8 heads, would you be honest in the report or treat it like normal?

Depends - would I notice? Who knows?

When you play a SSU, you are naturally expecting to get heads. It's part of your strategy to get heads, and so when you do, you just keep going. It doesn't matter much to you, it certainly doesn't stick.

When you get tails, though, your strategy is interrupted and you take mental note of it because you now have to re-think what you are going to do (even if you already knew what your backup plan was all along, you played the card intending to get heads).

I have very rarely played a SSU or Reversal simply to get it out of my hand without caring what the coin toss was. In fact, I don't think it's even possible.

You can tell this happens because people take note of Fainting Spell flips commonly - both favorable and unfavorable. You don't plan your strategy around hitting that heads on Fainting Spell unless you are a very high-level player; you just push it up and hope for the best, and you don't know what is going to happen when you flip that coin. So you take note of the result, regardless of what it actually is.

Fainting Spell is there to mess your opponent around and burn their resources while they struggle to avoid it.

Heads flip is just a bonus that you need somtimes to win bad match ups.

If you're basing a strategy on a coin flip then you're not doing it right.

lol, I burn SSUs to get them out of my hand all the time!

But coin flips are a part of the game, and I think you should have a right to say that you were "unlucky"; like getting paier against an autoloss or starting really bad.
