Confused about the new animated avatar rule...

I saw that there will be a "contest" for them later this year. I'm quite content with the one I have, and would rather not have to change it if possible, as I've had it for what feels like forever, and I would not be able to really replace it.

If we already have an animated avatar, will it be taken away? Or do we get to keep it, since it is still by the rules for all the other stuff?

my understanding is that you will get to keep yours until you wish to replace it, but once you do you don't get it back unless it's during the special time in which you have the opportunity. So you should be able to keep yours as long as you don't enter the contest.
