This has been an issue with several different people.

For clarification:

When confused you do not flip to retreat, when an attack is announced and the Pokemon is confused you flip, if the result is tails three damage counters are placed on the active and if the result is heads the attack is carried out as normal. If a heads result is reached on the attack confusion is not removed and if the Pokemon attacks next turn a flip will still need to be performed. Correct?

When Confused, you do no flip to retreat.
They are probably thinking of the original rules where you did indeed have to flip to retreat. The rule was changed about 2002.

You are also correct in the rest of your description. Confusion does not go away unless the Pokemon evolves or moves to the bench, or some effect removes it.
A successful flip to attack does not remove the Special Condition.
