Consistency over Creativity

Heh, it is good to see some people also share my view that this format is definitely limited.

However, I apologize if this sounds crude but this is Modified. There is nothing we can do about our card pool unless we want to try to be innovative. Need to test out a possible deck? Play apprentice or send some free time with friends. It is risky to play rogues in any competitive match without extensive experimenting anyways (Remember Destiny, anyone?). Other than that, we players can only trudge along in the current format and wait for next (possibly another stupid cutoff) rotation.

I quite find it ironic that even though rotations are done so that the metagmae is changing, sometimes it only serves to restrict even more....

On a side note, one new ruling did kill off a type of decks: fossils now counting as prizes! Whoever invent that rule must have hated defense/stall so much that he or she now wants the TCG to be all about offense/speed. :/

This is true! Just that the game at this same time last year was more like rock, paper, scissors, dynamite, hand grenade, bolt of lightning, fireball, laser gun, atom bomb...

Here's what we had to work with during States last year: Flariados, Polistall, Absolution, R-Gon, Raieggs, MetaNite, Flygon ex LM variants, MSNBC, Shiftry ex decks, MegaSteelix, Scythe, Destiny, Mewtric, Bandoom, T2RK9, Ludicargo, Tyroot, Speed Ban, SallyGross, Stantler variants, and Feraligatr d decks.

Although there was more variability at this time last year, half the decks you mention were really not that playable in a competitive environment. I think you're exaggerating how much this format is restricted in relation to previous ones. Remember Blaziken or lose?

Here are the State-winning decks from last year:

6 Metanite
5 MSNBC
4 Raieggs
4 Flygon d ex
4 Flygon d
3 Banette
3 Destiny
2 Shiftry
2 Absolutions
2 Flariados
1 Meganium d/ex
1 Arcanine ex

So yeah, a lot of the decks from my list didn't really make the cut, but that doesn't mean they weren't playable. I would probably label only these 4 decks on the aforementioned list to not be playable: Mewtric (because of Bandoom), Tyroot (because of Windstorm), Stantler variants, and Feraligatr d variants. Decks like Flygon ex LM variants and Ludicargo both had decent showings at Worlds last year.

I started playing at the very end of the whole Blaziken era, but at our first competitive tournament my brother nearly won a Gym Challenge with Dark Slowking, cutting clean through Gardevoir and Blaziken decks.
