Custom Playmat Help

I'm planning on making a Kabutops playmat out of a blank playmat, and markers. I'm not sure how to do it, however. I don't know what kind of markers to use, and how to set the colors so they don't smudge or fade. I've heard that hairspray works, but I'm a bit skeptical of that. I'm afraid the mat will afterwards be sticky or slippery.

Also, what markers are OK? I can't use Sharpies for Kabutops, because the Brown is too dark. Would Crayola/Washable markers be OK?

Feel free to also discuss your experiences with Custom Playmats.

Thanks, and please help!

I never made one but I can help with this. I would use black Sharpies with different sizes for the Line art. Now a good brand of markers are Prismacolors. The cost a bit but those markers good for just about anything with anime as far as coloring goes.

It come with light brown, well like 45 or 6 shades of brown. I would get the 64 pack but it would cost about 89 dollars or so. Go to a art store like Hobby Lobby. They sell singles for the for just about all of t hem. It would be a good investment if you get them.

Eighty nine bucks?????? Ummm....
I think I'll be buying singles.
Thank you very much.

Any more, again, is appreciated.

Around New England you can find them at a place like Staples or just Staples. They have them seprately and in those packs with likem 15, 30 and 60. They come in mainly every color as vaporeon said. I have the 100 dollar set which is probably the 89 dollar set now cosidering I have had mine for 2 years and they still work well. They are like the sharpie idea with two ends and work similar but are permanent.

No problem but they might not be that much, just something around. The singles I last checked were 1.99 or so. You can go to http://www.hobbylobby.com/ and check to see how much they are.

When you go, just ask for the Prismacolors markers and get the colors you need. Now remember, those are high performance markers. I would test them first out on something else before you take them to the mat if you never used them. You don't want to mess up the mat. Me I was going to draw my mat design on the computer and have someone put it on for me.

I was going to get the 120 pack of markers and color pencils.

OK. Thanks. I'll probably just buy a few singles.

What do you mean by test it out? On what?

lol. Yeah. I'm new at this.

I don't know how prevalent they are, but I know Michael's Crafts has them in singles of every color. So if you are only looking for a brown, that's one way to NOT have to buy $10-$20 just to get that one marker.

Cody: I would draw the Tops on paper/cardboard, practicing with the markers. Once you get the hang of the markers, use the cardboard to draw out the outline. Then, using a cutting tool, cut a fine line around your 'tops. Use that over the mat to draw in the outline. Allows you to keep a steadier hand onto the mat. Once you get the outline, go to town coloring. Good luck

Keith

PS I have cutting tools if you need to borrow any. We use them to shape pinewood derby cars.

There is an alternative as well. Go to a fabrics store and buy some THIN light brown fabric that you could gut out in to the shape of what you wanted to color and glue or attach to the mat.

Go to Walmart and find the color packs of sharpies. There are 2 of them that will give you all the colors you will need. This will run you about 20 bucks, but you will have all the markers you will need,

Prismacolor is better and can be found at places like Staples and Michael's.

Yeah, definitely use Prismacolor Premiers. They are really kind of expensive, I paid $30 for 12, but they work a lot better than regular Crayola or whatever.
They have just about every color, and you can probably order any color you can't find at the store.
Good luck!

I wouldn't mind making one either. Where would I get one too? I already have all the Prismacolor markers that I need so I don't need to worry about that. Just the playmat.

You can find the playmats on eBay for like, 10 bucks. Just search pokemon/yugioh blank playmat or whatever.

I'm liking the suggestions. I'll probably do that thing with the cardboard. I'm also probably going to order a few markers.

@Keith: Would a regular Box Cutter/ Razor Blade work? I'd say it would.
