Day 2 of Worlds - Changing Decks

We can argue "till the cows come home" about which format requires more skill. IMO, it's NOT about what requires more skill, but rather what KIND of skill is required.

I double dog dare somebody to take the cards I drafted at GENCON last year (in both team draft and the Fan Appreciation Tournament) and win with them.

I wish I was good enough to get good random cards out of an unopened random pack.

I'll take a triple dog dare on that one.

Not a triple dog dare. That one cannot be refused!

As for the draft, if it's a passing draft that would be better than that "blind draft" (what's it called anyway?) that we had in multiple tournaments at GENCON last year. I HATED that. Pure luck based on what you got in the pack.

Don't discount the "my packs were bad" excuse. It happens. And don't be too quick to claim "skills" when you happen to get 4 Tyrogues in a "blind draft."

There are two different kind of drafts:

Booster Draft - where packs are passed and nobody sees what other people are drafting
Rochester Draft - where 2 packs are laid out and everyone gets to see what gets drafted by whom

What some people are talking about is a Sealed. This is where everyone gets the same amount of packs and goes off and builds a deck.

There is a big difference between sealed booster and booster draft. The skill comes in when you are being passed the cards versus just seeing 54 different cards and playing with a forty card deck. Certain cards become extremely powerful in draft i.e. TA sharpedo, or flygon with no weakness or resistance. When you booster draft you have to have a very decent grasp at all the cards in the particular sets that you are drafting plus what your opponents are and are not passing you. The ultimate is rochester draft which I have never played in but would love to. You know what every one is drafting and the ultimate skill of drafting, counterdrafting, building a deck and playing come together. Sealed is alright for the prereleases because little kids don't know how to draft but for Worlds I think they should learn.

Yeah. Sealed is a crap shoot.
LC, however, was made with sealed in mind.
Most sets aren't.

Having participated myself, Rochester Draft is the ULTIMATE test of a player's skill.

For those wanting to participate in one, we will be holding a Rochester Draft at the Southern Stadium Challenge in Arlington, Texas on July 10th, after the main Stadium Challenge Event!

Truly a unique experience if you have never done it, but it is time consuming.

For fun we are doing an M/A Rochester draft at my house this week, with 8 players (stop, I know, I am not sanctioning something at my house) for my boys and I to play in with friends. This is by far my favorite style of draft!

umm, this topic is turning into a discussion about drafts. Please start another topic if you want to see drafts as part of the Worlds main event.

Getting back on topic....

So, if someone comes with a truly unique, powerful, rogue deck, would it be a disadvantage for those players to allow all players to change their decks for day 2? Possibly. But that's what competition is all about. You play someone. If you lose, you either modify your strategy or try to play better next time, or both.

It's like this. You show up with your rogue deck. It's essentially your "trick play." Do I let you "trick" me all tournament long without being able to do anything to counter it? Maybe for one day, but not for two days!

IMO, I really feel it would increase the competitiveness if players were allowed to rest, regroup, and re-evaluate their game in between Day 1 and Day 2.

NoPoke, not to be rude, but DUH! (Of course you use different decks for different tournaments.)

Let me throw a "wrench" into my own argument.

Comparing Pokemon to a sports team, your deck is essentially your team. Can you change your team once the tournament starts?

There will always be pros and cons to allowing players to change decks. Day 2 for LOTR Premier events is the Top 16 playoffs. Scouting your 1st and 2nd round playoff opponents is VERY big in LOTR. Maybe it's a bad idea to allow such competitiveness in Pokemon. But hey, I'm a competitive guy. :)

I'd personally like to see more variety in terms of what POP does for Worlds. I'd like to see 6 rounds of each individual sanctionable format (Unlimited, Modified, Draft) and end off with a T8 best 2/3 Rodchester Draft.

Are you responding to the idea of mixed format (constructed, limited, etc) or the main topic (changing decks)?

Anyway, they did mixed format at the TMB with the 10-under kids.

We're talking about World-level players here, not your average 10-under local player! It might be a bit tougher for kids that age to switch formats or decks, I agree. But, it's been done before at major events (at the TMB). So, it's certainly NOT unthinkable!

imo, a sideboard would be a very good idea, whether 5 cards, or up to 15 cards...then you can cange to way of how people are playing, or to tech things out, but still have your same deck, so you can't change all together, it would make things VERY interesting....

Although, if you do Rochester or Regular draft, i'd love either, i usually do good in drafts...

Deck changing is slightly drastic, but, then again, so is keeping the exact same deck over several day's worth of competition.

Sideboards are indeed nice (Love them in any game that supports them), but, personally, such a huge rules change, if even considered, shouldn't be implemented until AFTER Worlds.

Why? Well, you don't just go and make a monumental change like that during a tournament season, especially after Championships have started.

Were you allowed to change your deck with wizards in charge?

I don't think they did allow it.

But, that's not my point here. They do it for other TCGs (Lord of the Rings). I'm just wondering if it could work for Pokemon.

Obviously, mixed format was used for the Professor Challenge and the Tropical Mega Battles. I suspect that would be more of a possibility than changing decks, but I though I'd bring it up anyway.

Yeah change the formats in the playoff. MF in swiss and draft in playoff.. That´s just great! I love draft.. :D

I love sealed draft, hate booster draft, never played rochester but think it would be excelent. You should be allowed to change your deck from the grinder to the main event, they are two different tournaments!

I think adding a sideboard to Pokemon would be kind of fun, although the idea of entirely changing one's deck between days leaves me kind of cold.
