Donez's 3rd Place UK Nationals report - Senior!

Before I begin my Nationals report, I’d like to thank Volt and Freddy for working with me to improve my list (Couldn’t have done as well as I did without you) and the staff at Nationals that did an excellent job organising and running the event! :D I decided to run Luxchomp (Which I’ve ran for almost every event this season)

I began extensively testing for Nationals after Phoenix Games in Leicester closed down a few weeks ago and all ‘Leicester’ players started meeting up to play test and optimise our deck lists. Even though, it came to the night before and I was still really panicking… I hadn’t been able to fit ERL or the second Luxray LVX that everyone was suggesting to me and felt very uncertain on the deck. Was it the right choice?

So on the day, we drove down to the event (I was fortunate as we lived very close to the venue – Less than an hour away) and got there very early to discuss decks with Freddy. He too ran Luxchomp, so we discussed techs before handing in deck lists, made some changes and got ready for round 1. I met up with Nathan and Samuel before the round and had some laughs :p

Round 1 vs. Sam B. (Feraligatr/Suicune & Entei Legend)
As he started with Mewtwo I got a little worried, though I don’t think he saw the Level X before I dragon rushed it.I sniped around on his bench before he got a SEL and Feraligatr Prime set up and Torrent Blading for 100 a turn. However, one trash bolt and 2 Crobat drops 1 hit it, allowing me to take 2 prizes for the game. Unlucky dude, GG

1-0

Round 2 vs. Alex H (Jumpluff)
I can’t believe I’m playing Alex round 2 (I hate playing people you know )! He gets a good starting hand, but unfortunately mine was God-like. I managed to get 3 Power Sprays to stop all his Set Up’s turn 1 and took out his Luxray GL early. He was ‘Chattering’ for 3/4 cards and only got 2 Jumpluff setup all game. Very unlucky dude, you’re a very good player with an excellent deck and a good mate. GG :D

2-0

Round 3 vs. Alex W (DialgaChomp)
A Leicester player! :p I was lucky enough to get another God hand, which rolled through most of his Pokemon in one hit. He only managed to take one prize (I think). Very unlucky there, GG.

3-0

Round 4 vs. ? (LuxChomp)
I got an awful starting hand, something like a Bronzong start with a useless hand until turn 3. Incredibly, I managed to pull it back to win the match after Power Spraying carefully to win the game.

4-0

Round 5 vs. Michael (Kingdra/Machamp)
Before the tournament I took a gamble on whether to keep Unown G in the deck or not – I decided not and therefore thought I was going to have a very hard time against the deck. Unfortunately, he had an awful hand whilst I had a very solid start and he scooped after I KO’ed both his Machop early game. I ‘m very upset that Michael didn’t make the after getting awful luck in one of the next 2 games vs Jak (See baby mario’s report) and missed 4 SSU heads. I’m really sorry dude, very VERY bad luck  (You can own next year in Masters ;) )

5-0

Round 6 vs. Ross (Luxchomp)
I was feeling very confident at this point, as it didn’t matter whether I lost this game or not as I was going to make the cut regardless. Freddy told me to play cautiously and not drop too many techs for people to expect to see in the cut. I don’t remember much about this game apart from it being quite close and me winning in the end - sorry!

6-0

So I went into cut in top position – I got a prep talk from Freddy and went into the top cut very nervous. My brother was currently 5-0 in Juniors, and was starting the final as well. Top cut begins!

Top 8 vs. David S. (SP Toolbox)
Game 1 – I don’t remember much about the game apart from getting a crucial Poketurn top deck after he Luring Flamed my Bronzong G. 1-0
Game 2 – It was a much closer game than the first, but I still won in the end. As I took my last prize Freddy and Aydenn started cheering xD. 2-0

7-0

Top 4 vs. Adam H (LuxChomp w/Entei & Raikou Legend)
Another mirror!
Game 1 – I got an awful start with dead draw after dead draw. I managed to pull a few prizes, but by that time it was too late. He ERL’d for the game. 0-1
Game 2 – A much closer game, I got the choice and so went first to call and fill my bench. I managed to snipe any early Garchomp’s and Roserade at the earliest possibilities to go for game. 1-1
Game 3 – The game involved a lot of prize exchanging, but he had advantage as he had the choice of going first or second. As time was called, he had taken 4 prizes to my 2. Good Games, very close and a good way to finish a great tourney! 1-2

7-1

I had a fantastic game, and tbh I think just top cutting is a really great acheivement. I feel very sorry for all the 4-2's the didn't top cut as there was a 62 senior attendance (2 more players were needed, sucks a lot :frown:). My brother came second in the end, (Junior) so congrats to him too!

Props:

- Getting 3rd and Bro getting 2nd!
- Fantastic event and meeting up with Alex, Jak, Samuel, Nathan & Michael again
- Freddy and Volt for helping me with my list - Big thanks to both of you!
- Pulling both peices of ERL in my booster box :p
- NITISH!! (Just cause he wanted to be in my props lol )
- Interviewer's Question!!
- Play testing at Premier Inn
- Fantastic venue, was great to sit outside on the benchs before topcut to clear your mind and watch everyone playing with the beachballs :thumb:

Slops:

- Samuel, Michael, Alex, 'Piplup' and Freddy not top cutting :frown:
- Not fitting ERL into the list
- Late start
- Failing in Top 4!
- Brother getting bad hands in final - Could have won easily :-/
- Not being able to go to Worlds :frown: Too expensive

If anyone's interested in the list, PM me or ask here.

well done matey and congrats to daniel too. Hopefully I will be able to come next nationals and I shall be seeing you very shortly too ;)

Donez, man, you nearly did it.

Congratz anyway!

Jonathan - A real privilege to judge the semi final match vs. Adam.
Some great receovery on both sides across the 3 games with the lead swapping back and forth numerous times. Tough set-up in the first game as Jonathan says in his coverage, well fought back in the second game. And so it went in to the 3rd game and given how many times the lead had passed back and forth in the previous 2 games, it would have been great to have let the game play out to the end, but time was called and the cards favoured Adam.
Still... top 4 in the UK is a remarkable achievement... and given the calibre of the top seniors, Freddy better watch out next year... there's yet more competition on the way!!!
Great report Jonathan

Tough luck Donez. There always seems to be a curse on the player who is undefeated in Swiss!

Congrats on the top 4. You were really beasting it up to that point.
