Donphan Dominating Dallas (1st Place TX States Report)

This all started the week before. I judged Oklahoma's State Championship and was honestly displeased that there were a lot of Luxchomps in the top cut. So, I decided to run something that would be different. I made Donphan and playtested with the stragglers that were leaving Norman Sunday Morning. I fixed the tweaks and was ready to go.

The day didn't start out as planned. It rained and I had to catch a bus and a train to the Hyatt Regency Hotel. So, I spent that walk fighting my umbrella while carrying my goods for Christine's Food Drive and my backpack. I got breakfast and arrived at the Hyatt just as deck checks were getting started. Thankfully, I had my list typed and ready to go. I was the first Master deck checked and ready to go. I went to turn in my can goods to Christine and her clan. I spent the rest of the wait walking around and talking to friends that I haven't seen in a while. (That's what I love about the state and regional tournaments) I even walked around with my Pokewalker and interacted with all the people who had them.

So, we were all ready to go until... COMPUTER PROBLEM!!!!!! Because of this, we had to go eat lunch before round 1. SUBWAY FTW! So, I had the Chicken Bacon Ranch (Footlong of course) I ate with my other Wolfpack guys. We get back and it's time for Round one... after announcements.

Finally... Let's get started.

Round 1: VS. Cursegar.

Okay. I'm steamrolling with Donphan. He got expert belt on the gengar with Shadow Skip. His damage was adding up now and 2 hit my Donphan. The game was lost because of Mr. Mime (MT). I couldn't knock it out because of Mr. Mime's power. He stalled out until he got the last prize.
0-1

Round 2: VS Water(???)

After one round, I'm on the last table... I got Donphan going quickly and she couldn't get energy in her hand. Fairly Quick and simple.
1-1

Round 3: VS RayBees

I got Donphan out on t1 and knocked out his luxray starter. I was rolling from there. It was over when I used Pokemon Reversal to KO the Flutter Wings Beedrill with Heavy Impact and . He had to resort to using Twineedle to do damage. Donphan.
2-1

Round 4: VS Fossil?

I t1'd him. He had a lone Helix Fossil start. I had a Phanpy start. I attached and use copycat for 7 cards. I got the rest for the donk.
3-1

Round 5: Vs Cursegar

This match up went a little differently for me. He didn't get that many energies. It didn't help that I KO'd his Spiritomb earlier than he wanted to. He couldn't get Claydol. He couldn't get rid of Donphan.
4-1

Round 6: Vs Jumpluff

He dodged a donk because he got a basic on his opening draw. Another T-1 Donphan for me and I steamrolled him in a few turns.
5-1

Round 7: VS Infernape 4/Hunchrow G

I was in control the entire match. It got a little sketchy at the end of the game. He started to pick up cheap KOs, but I was able to overwhelm him with Donphan.
6-1

Okay... I am really hyped at this moment. It's a rarity that I top cut (Mainly due to tiebreakers). I'm jumping up and down and hugging all my friends. Everyone is trying to keep me calm because I am a bucket of nerves I check the top 16 and I'm number 8 and I'm the lowest 6-1...what a surprise... So after a long break, we start the top cut.

Top 16: Vs LuxChomp (Josh H.)

Game 1: I was able to steamroll him in the first game. He couldn't keep up with the constant Donphan. He did use Crobat G to poison Donphan.
1-0

Second game Josh made it a point to not let Donphan beat him. So, I beat him with Uxie Lv. X. Eventually, I was able to get through and have Donphan do some mop up.
2-0

Top 8: VS LuxChomp (Milan P.)

Game 1: Uxie start... I came off as a little weak. I hit a Copycat for night and got rolling. At this point, people were making it a point to double poison Donphan with Crobat G... I was able to get around Crobat's resistance. I beat him in a comeback for the win in round one.
1-0

Game 2: I was on mark from the beginning. I had some well timed Pokemon Reversals to stop him from setting up the Garchomp. I took out his pokemon with uxie X as well. He scooped when he ran out of options.
2-0

Top 4: Vs LuxChomp... AGAIN  (Alex)

Game1: I steamrolled. Donphan dominated again. I had some fortunate draws as well. He pushed me to my limit though. I was able to take it with Donphan getting up to Heavy Impact.
1-0

Game 2: I had a Uxie Start. He was able to get the job on me. He continued to snipe my Donphan. I stuck around with a late Donphan and guess what... Poison Fang... again...
1-1

Game 3: As we were setting up, time was called and we are going to sudden death. I had a Relicanth start... He had Garchomp C. I went first. I attached and ended. He went attached E. Gain and energy. He started to do things to donk me and didn't get it. He claw swiped. I drew plus power, play pokedex for the other one, I attached them with Buck and expert FTW!
2-1

Top 2: VS LuxChomp... Just kidding.... Thankfully. It's actually Plox (Charlotte)

Game 1: I started with Relicanth. I had kept drawing into my Bebe's when I needed Roseanne's to retreat into my Donphan until it was too late. Later in the game I got back into it, but it was too late. She had plox going for the win.
0-1

Game 2: I had got the early domination. Heavy Impact plus Expert Belt was the key. I was able to KO the Gardy with Expert for my last two prizes.
1-1

Game 3: Time was called before we set up so another Sudden death. I drew my hand and I had the donk... if I was going second... So, I had a double Phanpy start. She had a Ralts start and Spiritomb on the bench. I attached my energy to the active and ended my turn. She went and evolved to Gardevoir (PL) attach and ended. I went and got Uxie and played it. I drew into my pokemon reversal and FAIL! I evolve and attacked with earthquake. She hit her warp I called out Uxie. She couldn't get a psychic for the win. She passed I retreated and Earthquake FTW!!!!!
2-1

I jumped for joy and accidently flipped a chair when I stood up. I was so happy to get the monkey off my back. I got my second box in two weeks. I got the special Dialga mat. I gave the Ultra Mat to Charlotte for such a great match. I almost had a scare. My phone died... Luckily David has the exact same phone and he brought his charger. So I was able to call for a ride and get home at about 4. On the way home, we stopped by Taco Cabana for some food!

You had auto-wins the whole Top 16, what happens if you faced against Gyarados?

One thing I learned about this game. Every deck has another deck that could beat it. If you spend too much time trying to fix your weaknesses, you're going mess up your strengths. I learned to bite the bullet. You can't win them all. Funny story... The other Donphan deck that topped beat Gyarados to get into top 16.

Great job Demarcus. And to think I smacked you around Friday night with my Abomasnow deck, lol.

Keep it up, we're all very excited for you.

Austin getting DQ'd over a small mistake

I hate to say it, but Austin deserved to get DQ'd. It was made absolutely crystal clear to the point that no one could possibly misunderstand that if you opted out of deck checks and your list and deck didn't match, you would receive a DQ. If you want to avoid that DQ, then you can *gasp* write down your correct decklist (not like we have to do that every tournament or anything crazy like that) or you can go through deck checks to avoid mistakes.

Good job Demarcus. Donphan was absolutely the correct play for this tournament. There were few Gyarados and a ton of Luxchomp, and I respect your commitment to a consistent list, regardless of an autoloss. You completely deserved this win man.

What is the special dialga playmat?

Well, it's quite sweet. In addition to the special pokeball mat the winners get. We have a great artist from the Ft. Worth area that makes SWEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEET Mats and other items. He made a Palkia, Dialga, and Giratina playmat and gave it to the winners of the three age groups. I wanted the Giratina one, but since Masters was the last to end, I had to take the Dialga. They are one of a kind that only the Texas Champion get.

Not that I want to pick nits or anything. I missed this phrasing in the first pass this morning as I did not really read it.

I did not stall you or slow play in any way. Mime's body is called Airy Wall and my deck performed exactly how it was designed. I am sure that your intent was not to imply that I stalled you in any way, I just wanted it to be clear that when you ran out of energy and could no longer attack it was GG.

Congratz on the win.

Chill man, he wasn't accusing you of rulebreaking. He meant stalling with Mime, legally.

Exactly. That's the whole purpose of Mr Mime against decks like that. The purpose is to stall, just like Mewtwo Lv X, Spiritomb, and any other locking pokemon.

I still remember him coming out and going "I HATE MR MIME!" right after I was trying to prove how powerful Mr Mime was in a deck. This person didn't believe me and he shouted it at the exact perfect time.

great job bro WOLFPAC all tha way i would've stayed but mom's car messing up and u know that 161 dont run after midnight lol but great job bro

Yeah... Sorry for my poor phrasing. It was a legal stall. What I meant was you stalled out with Mr. Mime's body, stopping me from attacking and sending you your Gengar to do the damage. I didn't mean that you did anything unsportsmanlike. You slowed my attacking pace. Which is a good thing.

The Pheonix: Epic timing FTW!

Thanks to everyone. Wolpac was placed on the map. Not only me, but two others topped with me and two others were in contention to top cut.

DeMarcus, I am so proud of you!! The matches were epic and so great to watch!

Congrats, dude. You deserve it! Rogue decks for the win! (And if anyone says Donphan isn't rogue, they obviously didn't see DeMarcus's deck.)
