Donphan Prime counters

I am new to pokemon competitive gameplay. I am currently building a deck and I am looking for techs that can fit into any decks that can counter Donphan prime.

Yanmega Prime. Resists Donphan, can snipe around him to pick off Earthquake-weakened stuff and can simply hit him while only looking at being 3-shotted, doing all this for no energy.

True, that would require a judge card inorder for yanmega prime to work? What about like Red Gyrados, Its second attack requires one water energy + 3 colorless.

Unless you are playing in Worlds, you can always wait for Beartic to come out in the next set.

It's a Stage 1.
For a Water and a Double Colourless, he does 50 and the Defending Pokémon can't attack. It 2-shots Donphan and if Donphan wants to attack, he'll have to switch out. That'll be hard for 'phan because of his massive 4 retreat cost.

I forgot about that one card, what's it called? Oh yeah! SWITCH?

gee, that's hard to counter.

You HAVE to run beartic with Vileplume or else it does not work. The problem is that Donphan is extremely versatile. It's almost never run alone. That's the problem with countering it; you may counter Donphan, but they'll just use an alternate attacker and wreck you.

Can't believe these haven't been mentioned yet...

After the release of next set, and possibly the set after that, Kyurem and Tornadus will be hands-down the best Donphan counters. Tornadus has resistance and 2-shots Donphan for just a DCE and another Colorless. Kyurem basically ties Donphan's hands, because if they hit it with either Earthquake or Heavy Impact, it can OHKO for just a DCE.

Beartic also destroys Donphan, but as a Stage 1, it's a lot less splashable.

There's also this . . .

Cryogonal - Water - HP80
Basic Pokemon

[W] Icy Wind: The Defending Pokemon is now Asleep.
[W][C] Ice Ball: 30+ damage. If the opponent's Acitve Pokemon is a Fighting-type, this attack does an additional 40 damage.

Weakness: Metal (x2)
Resistance: none
Retreat: 1

According to PokeBeach.

Probably not in the next set though.

I think mostly at nationals this year donphan was mostly run with machamp and or yanmega/magnezone. It would be tough to counter combos such as these

Eh.

DonChamp was not heavily run and fared poorly. Adam Capriola took it to T64, and I think he did the best.
Donphan/Yanmega/Weavile or Donphan/Yanmega/Cinccino were heavily run and fared well.
Donphan/Yanmega/Zoroark was VERY heavily run and fared best.

that is what i was thinking to. Here is a scenario: a person has a dark type deck filled with most dark types. With type match up, it will fail against fighting type pokemon like Donphan. Would you tech your deck with a red gyrados and hope to get that one water energy or find something else. Red Gyrados from HGSS has 130 HP and it is a stage one with a resistance to fighting and can OHKO many of the fire decks out there. So you are pretty much set

Except Red Gyarados's attack cost is atrocious. Also, Montoya, you may have forgotten that Donphan reduces damage done to him by 20, so with a pluspower, Gyarados doesn't OHKO Donphan.
You'd be better off with Yanmega (Resistance, hits hard and its not hard to get an equal hand) or Tornados (80 for 3 white, and he can shoot energy to your bench so that when he dies, he'll have something powered up with his last shot). Tornados has the bonus of being a basic.
