Dragonite in past formats

RockLock <img src="http://pokegym.net/forums/images/smilies/nonono.gif">

I thought RockLock was mainly ttar...

But yeah, only the Dark Dragonite from TRR and Dragonite delta are the only played ones that come to mind, though I guess Dragonite FB gets a mention for being a cheap "anti SP" SP card (if that makes sense at all); otherwise, just about every other one has been...well, bad to downright horrible.

RockLock was Dark Ampharos and Dark Tyranitar. Dragonite had nothing to do with the deck.

Dragtrode (Dark Dragonite and Dark Electrode with Rocket's Sneasel ex) was a huge deck that consistently did well from the end of '04 until it rotated in '06. Metanite (Dragonite d and Metagross d with Holon's Castform) was also a huge deck that consistently did well from the end of '05 until it rotated in '07. Dragonite FB was one of the best anti-SP-within-SP cards available from the end of '09 until it rotated this year.

2 dominating archetypes and a few seasons as a critical SP tech isn't bad for any one Pokemon.

Thank you, how did they work?

Dark Dragonite had a Power that let you move your Darkness energy around however you liked on your field; Dark Electrode had a Power that searched out a Darkness energy card from the deck and attached it to itself once per turn. Rocket's Sneasel ex had Drag Off and an attack that did 30 + 10 for each Dark Pokemon on your bench. The goal of the deck was to get a lot of Darkness energy into play and then keep it there through the constant switching of Dark Dragonite while dealing big damage/pulling things up when appropriate with Drag Off.

Dragonite d had a Power that let you take a lightning energy from the discard pile and attach it to itself once per turn. Metagross d had an attack that did 30 + 20 for each energy you chose to discard from your Pokemon in play. Holon's Castform was used for draw (it had an attack that drew cards equal to the number of Delta Pokemon you had in play) and it also provided energy (2 of any type when you chose to play Castform from your hand as energy, at the cost of returning an energy already attached to the Pokemon you were attaching to back into your hand). The deck manipulated energy, did big damage with Metagross d and could utilize a lot of different techs due to Holon's Castform (as energy).

Dragonite FB did 80 to any SP Pokemon for CCC, or a DCE and an Energy Gain. It OHKOed Garchomp C lv. X due to weakness as well as a lot of other non-leveled-up SP Pokemon such as Luxray GL, Blaziken FB, Ambipom G, and Crobat G.

I wasn't playing the game back then, but I know that MetaNite (metagross delta/dragonite delta) was a deck. I don't know what it did though, so maybe someone else can explain it. :p

A lot of MetaNite decks also ran some Magcargo DX, the one with the Smooth Over Poke-Power.

This is because Metagross's Poke-Power looks at the top 4 cards of your deck. You choose 1 to put in your hand and put the other 3 on the bottom of your deck. Magcargo's Poke-Power allowed you to put any card on top of your deck.

It's one of only a few times that I have played an archetype. Unfortunately, during that season, I only managed to attend one City Championship.

Erika's Dratini I believe was good at one point due to its power to reduce attacks to 10 damage if it was attacked by a basic pokemon. You could transfer the 10 damage to Chansey via Alakzam's power.

Look up MetaNite on Bulbapedia. If you're interested in the Erika's Dratini combo mentioned earlier in the thread, look up Barrier Swap.

Don't know if it ever became meta, but the Dragonite from Fossil was actually pretty useful because it's power let you switch you active with it making it possible to get out of any status effect. Slam was also not horrible at the time, though it was like most Dragonite very flippy.

Dark Dragonair from the original Team Rocket was almost staple for evolution decks because it let you search out any evolution for one of your Pokemon once per turn. Dark Dragonite from the same set had good synergy as well as it had a coming-into-play power that let you bench 2 basics iirc.

the LA one was a giggles deck :p
but the erika's dratini one was really cool and the aformentioned Draggy FB, Dark Draggy and Draggy EX.

Wasent the dragonite from base set amazing? it did some rediculas damage back then like sixty for 2

60 for 2!? bwahaha. if such a stage 2 in those days existed it would have been overly broken which DCE in the format as well as Gust of Wind. The dragonite you're refering too - for 4 :colorless: energy did 40x the amount the heads you got (you flipped 2 coins) unles you meant Dark Dragonite, but it did 70 damage for 4:colorless: energy as well and you had to flip. if you got tails it did nothing.

Also, there was no Dragonite in Base Set. There was a Dratini and a Dragonair, but Dragonite wasn't released until Fossil. That was the one with the Step In Pokemon Power and the possibility of doing 80 damage for 4 colorless energy. Good times...
