Pokémon TCG: Sword and Shield—Brilliant Stars

European professor cup thread

Hmmm... I thought Venomoth would have a good matchup vs. Solrock/Wormadam because it OHKOs Solrock for 2 energies and has resistance to Wormadam.......oh wait Solrock has a body that negates resistance.

Prof Cup was really a fun event !
I've spent some really good moments, it was my first Prof Cup and I will come back next year for sure !

I played Pelipper with Porygon-2, I think it was a good deck ( in 4 games against non-Wormadam decks, only 2 Pelippers have been KO'd :D ) but I made some very stupid mistakes in top8 ( like forgetting to play Potion when my Pelipper has 20 damages *ashamed* )
Anyway, congratulations Steffen !

I don't think it's good.

Just try Monferno MD (and look at the Chimchar!!), Primeape d, Stadiums and PP and you can donk it.
The problem is they doesn't work against Pelipper-Water decks and friends.

Wow I never realised Chimchar was so good. I 100% agree. I think Monferno is the play. Primeape I'm not so confident about though. I think Monferno/Magcargo could be good even with the water issue.

See, 7 out of the T8 are Wormadam is disturbing to say the least. I have a deck already built, but the Lunatone/Solrock isnt going to make me very happy. However, Venomoth I think still has a favorable matchup. I could see them playing Scramble in the deck because it would be very decent. I still think that a decent solid deck that is consistant can beat it, however I think that it would be a tough matchup either way. I am not sure if I will change my deck or not. It really depends on a few things. I guess I need to test the Wormadam matchup. This is what happens when a card that was originally a rare get's reprinted as an uncommon. It becomes uncommonly good. :nonono:

I swear, every single Italian player is playing POP7 Wormadam. I faced 3 and lost to all of them. 2-4 on the day. Rough, I tell ya.

Guess I'll be making some changes for the NA Cup.

Does this mean your changing decks or that your going to "Banning" it. I think I'd rather see it banned. It is way too good for an uncommon consider it was a rare originally

so drew, are you saying that we'll see a repeat at our Prof Cup??? a buddy of mine had seen this coming, but I think we'll see some other great decks out there, don't you???!!!

The 'metagame' for the prof cup (it seemed like it was worlds only with no rares and other decks):

-Wormadam
-Venomoth
-Breloom
-Donphan
-Strange combo's with monferno
-Prinplup
-Parasect (That is what I played, only 3 of them in the tournament, but still a fun deck)

And a lot of players played these as a back up line
-Porygon2
-Volbeat/Illumise
-Solrock/lunatune

I would be surprised if there was anything else in the cup (except for Lia).

Well, I think there will be other decks, but I think they are all going to lose to Wormadam. It is a 80 HP Pokemon that with Solrock can get thru resistance, has a basic that can get energy from the disard pile, when scrambled can do 70 for 3 plus you still get the fighting from the discard pile. You can't beat something that is that good. There is no good fire in the format, and if even you did find something would it really beat the other decks you might play?

Here my little report, i got 16th winning the last NDS, wich i use as present to a professor victim of the bad karma, lol.
I wanted to carry a Metang pk+slowbro, i know of wormadam.
I arrived at milan at 23.00 and go to friend's home and start playtesting. The deck sucks and i switch to a Wormadam deck, here is the list:

Pokemon:15
4 Solrock
2 Lunatone
4 Burmy sand cloak
4 wormadam sand cloak
1 Unown Q

Trainers:29
4 Celio's network
4 Roseanne's Research
1 Holon Mentor
3 Tv reporter
2 Steven's advice
2 Great Ball
2 Castaway
3 Buffer piece
1 Strenght Charm
3 Plus power
2 Night Manteinance
2 Warp point

Energies:16
14 Fighting
2 Scramble

I started playtesting it, loosing every mirror match until 4.00. I won first than go home.
The day after i went 4-2 losing to lars in a very intense mirror and at the first turn to a water spred deck due to my unown (q, lol) of the match. I benched some lol things and got spredded, had to waste all of my buffer piece and so.

But i'm happy.

I also donked 2 pop members on 3 (mike lost to my solrock, pete got donked too).

PROPS:
Organization
Prices
Playing mat (O_O)
NDS
Friends from italy and from europe!
Dutch people
Lia (i really loves her! LOL, we had a nice talk after the tournament)
Mr. From (Steffen father), wich i respect a lot, and his nice sleeves (Oh, i love From Family's sleeves :O)

SLOPS:
Not winning the Ipod touch (but don't mind!)
4 Italians in top 8 and 1 in top 4
Nothing else

Some People had good use of Volbeat/Illumise/Porygon2/4x TGM - You can play 2 of these every turn, and with energy removal, you will have one destructive deck.

Drew, some players did play Venomoth, but because of the Solrock-Lunatone line i Wormadam they were no match - wormadam was too fast.

A little counter for Wormadam: Play Cessation Crystal - It kills the deck. Also Ambipom (MD) is also a great card with Boost = OHKO a burmy.

Hope you will find this of use.

I don't think cessation kills the deck. It just slows it down to the same speed as all the other decks. And since you can only have 4 cessations in a deck you will eventually run out in a six prize match.

On the Mars thing, it seems like a decent idea, but ER2 isnt need if they have no cards. I am not sure how much I like it.

Venomoth is really good, but as you said the no-resistance factor did them in. As for the Cessation Crystal. I think you woud be in agreement with me if I said play Cessation is a bad idea. Most of the decks that are doing well are power based because the format is so slow that the few pokemon that have powers solve this problem. I also think you need to realize that you play 2 Windstorm which negates 2 of the Cessation Crystal's right there. Crystal Beach becomes a more interesting play, but I am not sure it would really be anymore helpful than Cessation.

Ambipom sounds interesting but it isnt the greatest idea. I think the best card really might be Prinplup because you can spread then hit for 40 for 2 energy. The only problem is that a single Wormadam can run thru atleast 2 of the Prinplup before going down. Trading 2 for 1 isnt going to be a good formula for winning.

Spinda + Grass Energy = LOOOOOL

Octillery is very good too, but it's too slow.

I still like Monferno-Primeape-Plus Power-Boundary...i was going to play that but i thought it had bad match-up vs the other decks.

Pelipper.
There were also some nice spread decks, but they didn't do well because of their auto-loss to Breloom.

Professor Cup could have been a really good tournament with an interesting metagame if they didn't permit playing Wormadam. The original card was a rare, and it's to strong to be an uncommon. Last year's decks were a lot more interesting. But at least, I met some people I don't see at my national tournament. ^^

I wonder why absolutely nodody was playing TGW. It would have been really good in that metagame combined with Porygon2, Illumise and Team Galactic's Mars (if you lose Wager, take a Steven with Illumise and you have a good hand next turn). Unfortunally, I thought of this too late... could have prevented my opponents from having 3 PlusPowers out of 5 cards on their hand every time they needed them. :/
