First ever tournament - 3RD at BR. UK

This is my first report so apologies if not up to scratch/spelling error etc Went to nottingham for first BR that i ever competed in so was pretty enthusiastic about it. I get there needing around 12 cards for the deck i wanted to use, so after rushing round for half hour or so i get everything and managed to play 'The truth' aka ross's deck, however i changed some things to my preferability and to deal with current format

Round 1 vs jemma (forgot last name sorry) with Stage 1-donphan/cincinno/zoroark & dragons.
We open up and i see reshiram and miniccino (cannot spell sorry). I opened up oddish or solosis and phaphy i believe. Immediately i thought I wish it was a zekrom since i could 2 hitko it with ease. Though thats how it goes. The gameplay kicks off with me setting up with several more basics and attaching energy to phanphy. She collecors up several basics including cleffa & phanphy & zora. Then retreats reshiram with DCE and eek(s) for 6. flips heads and my turn began. i envolved in donphan and instead collector'd out my own cleffa and eeek'd making sure twins would stay live. I flip heads an wake up. She then promotes newly envolved cincinno and does the wave for knockout. This was the downfall as the cleffa refresh gave me : communication, pichu, collector, rare candy, twins, zekrom. So i twin's for the plume and candy then communication for reuniclus and proceed to prevent all damage. She dosnt run special dark energy so it became a prize per turn.

Game 2: we both open very poor, i had a phanphy start to her collector'ing out her basics. However after 3 turns we seem to be donphan mirror matching. She had 2 donphans, reshiram, zoroark, cincinno to my 2 donphans just eq battling. However when i finally draw sage(s) then turn later collector things go downhill for her as the lock is placed up once again.

1-0 sweet first win of first tourney

Round 2 vs Freddy for short ZPST with mew and relicanth tech
Game 1 is very dull unfortunetly. he starts with relicanth and i started with lone zekrom. my first words were....what the?!! This turned into several turns of him putting cards into the lost zone whilst i setup. turn 2 i got a vilplume lock on crippling him but after 4 turns of outraging for 20 he had alot of energy on the board. Though i wasn't too concerned as he had to use 2 turns to kill the zekrom. This leads to reuniclus lock and taking prizes ending in a scoop

game 2. i start zekrom to his zekrom. i didnt play down the solosis being confident with my zekrom start. Though i regretted this as i had twins, in hand incase it went seriously poor. This was my own fault as he got the 130 turn 1 donk. (Seriously i hate this deck with passion).

Game 3. The lock was established however he managed to do so much damage output for me to move around it caused alot of problems. Though time was called and in the 3 turn rule he managed to equal the prize trade to 4-4. However the sudden death rule continues the game and im able to take my next prize the following turn with 120 damage'd zekrom (140 outrange k.o.s anything zekrom based). Close game and came down to wire.

2-0 Looking good so far.

Round 3 vs zpst & smoochum & bellsprout. (Sorry i cannot pronounce/type his name)
Game 1. was extremely with the lock and heavy impacting after a while just ends in scoop. There isnt much to read but simple setup and he dosnt get the energy accel he needed

game 2. i start lone solosis to zekrom and hes gutted with how he couldnt get the DCE to donk (he had pp in hand) i then comunication for pichu and setup. He manages to kill 2 oddish i benched due to me being unfortunet with not getting any twins for a while =(. Though this wasnt a problem as i run 4 oddish which allows comebacks. But due to me being a fail player i used sages training and accidently discarded one of the oddish's and couldnt take it back due to adding 2 cards to hand already...-stupid misplays. This ends in him catchering easy prizes and taking the game

Game 3. Time gets the best of me. Extremely close game and comes down to 1 prize card to tie it and force sudden death. This unfortunetly wasnt possible as i couldnt move enough damage to kill freely without being revenge killed back for the sudden death prize rules. If it played out for another few turns i would have won due to damage manipulation and seeker in hand.

2-1 break time. Went to greggs, got sausage roll, drink and some cookies. Talk to some mates who are doing not great =/ one was 1-2 and another 0-3 having bad luck with prized cards

Game 4. Laura -Stage 1 rush with tornadus/zoroark/cincinno

game 1. The deck cannot counter donphan with heavy impact with the lock. This lead to the game being quite favourable. however it still came down to 1 prize card, luckily for me she couldnt take it and i was allowed to walk on freely. Though the lock suprisingly got setup very late (Reuniclus line not vilplume)

game 2. I personally think i shoulda lost this as it came down to time right near the end. I messedup quite badly with an energy drop and allowed her to take out ESL because once again reuniclus didnt like me (well duosion more like as i always had reuniclus and solosis). I was 2 prizes left to her 3. I left ESL active for her to kill purposely so i could use twins to grab the pieces i need to heavy impact every turn and damage manipulate. She promotes tornadus(s) retreating and such but its too late as both were damage for 40 and couldnt take a heavy impact. She scooped even though she could have cleffa stalled which i pointed out to her and she replied but nothing to grab. some other players after said she coulda tried to flip 2 tails and go for sudden death game 3. however this didnt happen as she picked up her cards, i dnt mind which way this went really it was fun and enjoyable. Though a win is a win cannot complain...can we?

3-1 and i checked rankings i was 3rd so far another win and i make it. i speak to someone i met at event and having a chat about decks we use since helped eachother get the cards we needed at start......ironically he then is my next opponent....Doh.

Game 5. Jack snell -reuniclus/zekrom/plume/beartic/Darkrai & cress legend
Extremely long winded but to start things off he has pichu and (the basic for beartic) to my phanphy, solosis and oddish. I get a bit ahead of myself forgetting twins, so when i took first prize with donphan eq. I wasnt expecting him to have the godly counter hand (twins, candy, plume, duosion, com, pichu). this gave him an instant beartic and due to him dropping rainbow energy turn before i was in trouble.

I left donphan active for fodder whilst i attached energy to my zekrom. He then takes donphan out with ease and im thinking well....this is not going well. I promote zekrom and use it to stall whilst i try to find an answer to this. Envolve oddish into gloom and solosis into duosin & dudou . Then he drops Darkrai Cresselia legend retreats beartic (discarding all energy) and attachs rainbow to the legend and moves my damage counters around to k.o duosion and gloom.

This made me think well....no topcut chance for me should i scoop? instead i continued on thinking there is a way, i couldnt bench anymore solosis since he left 30 damage on my donphan just incase. So on my turn i topped twins and started to get things rolling, since i knew DCL cannot damage me alone i had some thinking time. I twin linked up for my own legend Entei suicune legend and started energy attaching. I put down dudou onto bench and started to setup possibly my answer to his deck. He attaches energy to his zekrom and passes. This goes on for a while as he couldnt damage me, and i wasnt going to earthquake if last thing on earth. evebtually ESL becomes available for attacking, so on the last twins i grab DCE and dodrio and retreat donphan. I then use ESL to 1hitko his reuniclus breaking his lock. he was a bit suprised at how much of a threat ESL was to his deck, and promoted DCL as stall whilst he powered up beartic.

The following turn i attack DCL for 80 going for the 2hko. This unfortunetly didnt do so well as he retreated it and promoted beartic which struck for a 100. the following turn i had to remove this damage since DCL was going to mess me up. so i retreated ESL for zekrom and seeker'd back the ESL whilst he chose DCL. I then rebenched ESL and attached dce. The next part is a bit hard to remenber as alot happened during the turns just cannot remenber exact order. it involved esl hitting duosion on the bench to prevent damage manipulation and resulted in esl taking large amounts of damage again.

next turn it was clear esl was going to die from his eyes (DCL damage movement). so by retreating esl again. i was able to remove all the damage for the 2nd time using seekerand powered him up again, though the game was still extremely close his 4 prizes to my 2. I decided to strike DCL for 100 with ESL which gave me the choice of either him promoting it and loosing due to either donphan being more than capable of the k.o or him unable to take all 4 prizes (i had 240 damage on my table and this would have easily netted him 3 prizes) though it was up and he knew he couldnt win anymore due to the cresselia being his out and unable to take 4 prizes in 1 turn. This resulted in him scooping to try and preserve time knowing he couldnt get out of this.

game 2 was a bit stale as he needed to go aggro as much as possible to get to 4 prize cards. Though his first sages training was his undoing as he wanted 4 (he told me this after the match) out the 5 cards and had to force and relunctantly discard the DCL piece that caused me headaches in the 1st game. when reuniclus hits the field time is called after him taking 2 prize cards and unable to take 2 more given the circumstances and being under 3 turn rule

Best game of the day (Y)

4-1 i check rankings and see i was 3rd =D one guy got abit mad at coming 5th by under %1 margin. he only lost to the top seed but due to the 4th places resistance being stronger it put her ahead. (jemma from round 1)

Topcut time. I really wanted to get some payback on the ZPST build i lost to earlier and here was my chance

top4 vs Zpst bellsprout smoochum

game 1: i get to go first and opened phanphy and dudou to his zekrom. i attach rainbow flail and pass. knowing i got the k.o next turn with donphan. However This unfortunetly went to plop when he manages to get turn 1 bollstrike yet again.....(really sick of this today!) and it goes downhill from there as i couldnt get any donphans out due to catcher and bolstriking -_- seriously uncool: 4 catcher, turn 1 bolstriker.....need i say more? and on the chance to pullback with vilplume up i force to take a sweet sleeping face risk with pichu and he wakes up for the 4th time in row...why cant babies ever sleep when u want them to...seriously.

game 2: Well no turn1boltstrike enables me to get setup and start heavy impacting for auto win game. Since zekrom cannot cope with donphan behind a trainerlock. (for all those wondering smoochum and bellsprout were poor in this matchup due to DCE & dodrio causing problems whilst smoochum woke up and got Eq'd immediatly).

game 3: Why does zpst hate me so much is the question here. I get a poor setup and go a quick reuniclus before i pont knowing its safe from tornadus atm due to his setup (lone zekrom). Though he manages to draw thenergy he needed and had both pachi and shaymin in hand. though im able to recover and quickly revenge kill with donphan (for a change). Things get setup and he is way out in the lead prize wise until i have 4 left and he has 3. I manage to keep an oddish in play and have twins in hand ready to shut down his trainers for good and possibly mount the comeback (my field was 2 zekrom with dce's and 2 donphans 1 with rainbow to his 2 tornadus, 2 zekrom. one of the zekroms already damaged) I play twins and look through the deck for vilplume and candy but the last candy i needed to essentially win was prized -_- This was really a kick in the teeth. so i went for gloom instead and twins again hoping for best. Though u guessed it catcher....hurricane goodbye gloom and my chances of winning. I then scoop as he shows he has catcher and fully charged zps.

4-2 overall. The ZPST player with smoochum and bellsprout went onto win it and essentially giving zekrom yet another BR win -_- nice guy, hated his deck though for what it is.

Props
Met new people
Played first tournament and got experience
Won something (3rd due to rankings) so was happy that i got something for my efforts =)
Got the whole deck now besides 2 solosis and 2 duosion for myself
Mates giving me a lift (cheers carl and rich)
Judges -pretty cool and well organised with rulings and traded me the ESL & reuniclus's i needed =D
Pokemon community (so much better than yugioh i used to play, more chilled out and none of this damage step)
Meeting baby mario - seriously wanted to play this guy but didnt get the chance -he went undefeated until finals and woulda loved to played him there. Though on side note didnt look like anything id have thought 0.o man i guess u never judge a book by its cover, though still cool guy and glad to know some more faces in community
Greggs
Burger king on way home =D

Slops
Misplaying like a fool, suprised i won what i did
Prize cards.....might run 4 candy now -_-
ZPST -is there any reason needed for this?
Mates who gave me the lift doing poor =/ felt bad for these guys though cnt do owte about it

Hey, Great read dude and congrats on the 3rd place!

Just a note.. Round 1 game, her name is Jemma ;)

Hope to see you at more events..

Hey man, Jack Snell here, really pleased to have met you, you seem like a really kind genuine dude :fire: So pleased we shared such an epic game, two lock/disruption decks going all out. Perhaps I should have scooped earlier but I thought I had a genuine chance, if you hadnt ripped the Seeker off the 13 card Copycat for game

Pleasure to play you anyway, and mad props on the 3rd place finish, hope to see you around and please hit me up on Facebook

Hey thought id somehow speak to you again in near future =p. Tbh i think the whole community in pokemon is majority chilled out and friendly, its always nice to see a good atmoshpere with competive play. Its good to see that in players for a change from my experience in yugioh. the game was indeed epic :L ive learnt a harsh lesson not to get ahead of myself and charge at any random prize i see especially in mirror. Twins just punishes u for it >.<. lock deck mirror match in all honesty i thought was going to be boring and extremely stale but it was most fun game i had all day since made me work for my win. Though i was a bit suprised u didnt use donphan.... needless to say beartic shut me up about that comment after turn 2. If u scooped earlier it could have been a different story. though the fact ure DCL is able to change the game at any given points makes it worth going down to the wire for, never had to do so much maths in my life. when i won that 1st game i was gobsmacked as i guinely thought u had it until that last moment where i hit ure DCL preventing u from using it without me taking the last 2 prizes

I hope we play again as that was one of the few proper close games ive had in friendlys/tournaments. i take it u made ure train btw =D

Yh man I mean I could have gone the Donphan route to spread the damage on my board but I only have space for one Seeker, and conceptually once the lock is setup, and Beartic/Zekrom is active, Reshiphlosion, Zekrom, Yanmega Cincinno, etc. will have no way to take KOs, but will still probably be putting damage on the board to try and overwhelm my field.
Granted Donphan has exoskeleton but with a Metal weakness and 10 more HP Beartic is alost as sturdy under the lock.
Indeed it was a fascinating game and undoubtedly the best match I played all day. However the 4 Prize win margin doesnt do justice to how close that game actually was, at times I was threatening 3-4 Prizes in one turn.
DCL was just a tech against Gothitelle, the mirror and as a way of manipulating the pseudo spread damage that Sheer Cold creates.
And yes thank you I did man, but with literally 1 minute to spare and tht was after running

---------- Post added 10/08/2011 at 11:45 PM ----------

And also man the name of my friend you played in round 4 is Laura, not Lauren x :nonono::fire::rolleyes:
Irrelevant perhaps but I took 2 prizes in game 2

I admit time is annoying, especially when you know in the longrun you know you can win despite being behind. This cost me the game in round 3 i knew i can win but couldnt do anything about the clock. I know how the deck idea works for beartic varient, i was experimenting it over donphan and just found donphan the better option with damage/speed and versabilitys vs alot of stage 1 decks. (weakness is fun when isnt you for a change =D)
DCL i underestimated, i was testing it and thought...why? though i stand by my choice of ESL since makes reshiphlosion alot easier and hits any lock decks reuniclus out. it also served me well against lauren when it hit her benched zoroark with 2 energy.

nothing wrong with running, every minute counts! just be happy trains leave on time and never early.....unlike buses (hate these things more than zps varients)

p.s.
i worked out btw whats the differences between mine and ross's deck. =p

Well played dude! Always good to see a new player doing well and from what i saw you played a hell of a tournament :D

What i would say is: You need to proof-read this! I had to skip your game with Jack Snell as the huge paragraphs, lack of punctuation and constant mis-spellings made it genuinely difficult for me to read. The bits i could get were interesting but i gave up reading parts because it was too difficult.

Otherwise good job on the win and i always like reading reports (where i can).

P.s. In your top 4 match you said how sick you were of T1 "Bolt Strike" but from what i could read (and i may have missed something) it seems it only happened to you twice. Did i miss something?

Twice is too much, Ross. Way too much.. :frown:

I agree with you Sir! Just that it was phrased as if it was a constant problem, not twice in 6 best of 3s (11%).

On the one hand i hate Zekrom because of the donking (especially as i play only 10 basics!) but also i kinda wanted to play them because i play a heavy twins line and when set up can beat them kinda nicely :D

Still, i avoided them all day (somehow!!) Nevermind......

(I also have everything needed to play Zekrom but just can't bring myself to do it)

ill edit it later on today, i know its long winded but it was very close and intense. perhaps proof reading is a good idea for readers. thanks for the praise btw

with the turn 1 bolstriking, ive seen and read about it (on here and other forums) then to experience it in a tournament isn't the best feeling in the world especially more than once. I know its part of the game but its too high damage output for turn 1 imho.

I dont mind zekrom on its own, but when combo'd with pachi/shaymin etc it gets abit irritating how you can do such high damage turn 1 whilst majority of decks need turn 2 or longer to setup/attack.

being able to do it in first place is too much. but thats how theyve made zekrom =/

Hey there Laura here, good games! Though I only scooped because I thought you'd taken your last prize, haha.
Congrats on 3rd place. ^^

hello again laura. yea i was abit suprised, i was behind you in prizes afteri let ESL be knocked after my missplay with the energy drop. thats what allowed me to use twins and get the lock off whilst heavy impacting. i thought u was going to cleffa stall as did tamao when he said 'play it out'. Two things i learnt that game; the deck can win even if your opponent only has 1 prize card left, the second being reuniclus likes being late to the party.

thanks again for the game and hope to meetup again in future :)
