First Place! AZ Battle Roads @ Hero Comics, 05-31-08, Masters

Hey guys!

Ashley here. Wow, so Robert told me I should totally blog about this, and I always liked the feedback he gets on his posts, so I decided to give on of these report things a try, seeing as I managed to take the top prize tonight!

This Battle Roads took place at a fine ol' store: Hero Comics in Phoenix. I always seem to do well here for some reason, probably because the atmosphere is great and we're surrounded by all the nice comics and merchandise and what have you. The drive there is a little long (coming from Tempe with Julie, Robert, Rico, and Susan riding in my beatermobile), but still not as bad as Samurai or Imperial Outpost... no offense to those stores.

Everyone seemed as though they were high spirits today, which is great, because it sucks when people are all 'mehh' and pessimistic about playing. Everyone also was such a great sport today too, which added to the whole 'spirit of the game' enthusiasm.

Anyway, onto the battles?
Okay, I feel bad because I am SO bad with everyone's names, so bear with me.

ROUND ONE: Guy in Urahara Hat w/ Dark Metal (Dialga, Honchkrow, Bronzong, et al.)

He went first. He had a Dialga as his active, with a Bronzor and a Murkrow on his bench. He attached a metal and did Time Bellow. I had a Ho-Oh out, which was my only Pokemon for a few turns. I kept attaching as he did Time Bellow. Eventually, I got a Togepi and candied it up a Garchomp I was working on while Ho-Oh remained my starter. I took out his pokemon and I kept my Ho-Oh going until he knocked it out. His Poochyena kept paralyzing my Pokemon, but I broke through and kept gnawing away with Garchomp for the win.

Win; 1-0.

ROUND TWO: This guy I always play w/ delta!Pigeot and delta!Flygon

I play this guy all the time, and he always plays Delta decks, but I can never remember his name! Shame. This was actually rather tricky. I forget the details, but I believe the battle went the same as above. I managed to get two Garchomps going, BUT, here's the kicker! His Pigeot's Poke-Body made me not be able to use my Claydols, so I had to drudge past that. He kept Delta Drawing with Holon's Castform, but I eventually got my Chompies going for the win.

Win; 2-0.

ROUND THREE: Jeremy w/ Eeveelutions and Magmortar

Playing this guy is always a tough and challenging battle! For a while, all he had were two Eevees and no energies. I had my Pokemon set up, but I couldn't do much of anything, either. SLOW STARTS ARE SUCH A PAIN! We just kept pounding at each other's Pokemons, and it was quite a feat of luck at the end of the game where I struggled and did all I could to get rid of cards to do my Claydol's Cosmic Powers for the lucky two Plus Powers to knock out his Magmortar. I was so worried that we'd get to time, because finishing a game off like that is so painstakingly grueling... and bad on the nerves. He put up a very formidable fight, but I pulled through with my Chompie, and took the win.

Win; 3-0.

ROUND FOUR: Anthony w/ Phione and Empoleon

I say Phione first because this was a very quick win, where my double-weak Ho-Oh, the ONLY basic I've had the entire game, lost out to its Water Pulse. I mean, I had no trouble waking up, and I rolled heads to save my Ho-Oh, but I couldn't get a bench going so his Phione kept cuteslapping it until I rolled a tails for the lose. :(

Lose; 3-1.

ROUND FIVE: Matt w/ Palkia, Crawdawnt ex, et al.

This is what I call the round of guilt. It ended in a game loss on his part (warning on my end). We both had excellent starts and we were having at each other. He was SUCH a wonderfully good sport and I tip my hat to him for letting me use Serene Grace my Ho-Oh. With it, I knocked out his Palkia Lvl. X, but not before his Crawdawnt ex sent my powered-up Garchomp away... It was a good match that could have went either way, but a judge noticed he drew seven prizes instead of six-- something I regret to say we both did not notice-- and paused the game, until Patricia gave us our penalties. What a horrible way to win. :(

Win; 4-1.

Fifth round brings us to the finals!
This is what the top four looked like: Deidra w/ delta!Flygon ex; Drew w/ Empoleon; Julie w/ Blisseon, and myself. Woo!

I was so happy that three girls (all from Team Watermelon, no less) made it into the top four! It was very cool, indeed. These three people are such good and respectable players, and I was very happy to have made it up there with them.

Julie and Drew duked it out while I got matched up with Deidra. I called her uber!Deidra all afternoon because she went undefeated, which was super awesome. I was pretty nervous going in because delta!Flygon is one tough cookie, but I decided to give it my best.

DECISIVE BATTLE! ASHLEY AND DEIDRA SEMI-FINALS DELICIOUNESS!

First round in our best two out of three match was the slowest start everrrrr. We just drudged about 'til Deidra's delta!Flygon took out all my two Baltoys. I couldn't get any Pokemon going, because all I drew were energies after energies. No Claydols, no supporters. I think I had a Garchomp Lvl X in my hand, too.

Deidra: 1, Ashley: 0

Second was pretty cool. I started with... Togepi and found a friend with Ho-Oh, eventually letting the baby Pi stick it out long enough for me to Rare Candy it into a Kiss, and built up the Ho-Oh to overwhelm her Baltoy and Trapinches.

Deidra: 1, Ashley: 1

Eek! I admit it, I was nervous... but the game ended rather quickly. I started with Pachi and got a Gible, Ho-Oh, and a Togepi. Rare Candied the Pi, got a Kiss, and built up Ho-Oh for a deja vu of the last battle.

Deidra: 1, Ashley: 2.

YAY! This was the best I've ever done in a Battle Roads! I was really excited.
I admit, I reaaaally didn't want to battle Julie, because she beats me more often than not. It felt like her battle with Drew took FOREVER. I battled Susan in the meantime and waited for them to be done.
Apparently, it was a tough battle and Drew's penguin friends got him the wins he needed in the end.

THE FINAL BATTLE! SHOWDOWN BETWEEN ASHLEY AND DREW FOR #1.:thumb:

It was SUCH an awkward start! Both of us mulled at least three times each, but we managed to get it done. I think I started off with Togepi and eventually built up a Garchomp or two while I was waiting for the Kiss to come. He killed the Pi before I got the kiss, but my Garchomps were ready and raring to go. I Xed one, and after dealing major damage, he scooped.

Second round, not so mully. I opened with Pachi, but I think he had a Claydol and picked it of after a turn or two, but not before I got two Gibles and a Baltoy out. Ho-Oh was in my prizes, so he couldn't help me. I eventually got a Pi and turned it into a Kiss, and put three whole energies on one Garchomp tahtw as waiting for action. He kept getting his penguins out, the Lvl Xes at that, and he picked off my Chomp X, leaving one Garchomp.
After battling his penguin soldiers (lol, yu-gi-oh term), I Premier Balled my X back and just went at it. I gave my Claydols (I managed to get two out somehow) damage from his Kabutops in order to do Cosmic Power, and I eventually got Plus Powers to win it. OMG.

IT WAS GREAT. He was so awesome, and I was excited to win!
I don't think I was the first girl to win an AZ Battle Road, but it felt so great! I put the pin on my hat, and was uber-excited over the Victory Medal (*pets it*), and I kissed my good luck Munchlax for helping me out. I also gave Dustin a pack for helping me build the deck... >>

YAY. Overall, it was a fun time.

PROS
+ Girl Power (+Drew) for Top 4.
+ Everyone for being such good sports!
+ Susan's cute silliness brightening the day.
+ Rico for gas monies.
+ The judges for being so "on the ball" and helpful.

I'm so proud of ya. D: I only pooted cuz I ate italian spicy wings, tehe. We'll all do good tomorrow as well, YOSH!

Susan is such a charming young lad. I want him to make me a Munchlax that smells like fresh spring flowers on a sunny morning.

I HOPE JULIE GETS TO GO TOMORROW. WAH! (I still don't want to fight her, irregardless.)

Or perhaps a Munchlax that smells like Deidra's house?

OMG, if she doesn't go Imma break out the hammers and i will HIT HER WEAK POINTS FOR MAXIMUM DAMAGE!! DX

It seems like Team Watermelon's getting some street cred! 'Grats!

I'd really like to see the list for this.

Was this in Master's or Seniors? I'm bad with trying to match people and the different divisions...

But yeah, good job on winning a BR. I couldn't go to this one, and can't go to tomorrow's either >.>

Lol yes, the decklist. The only thing that I really need to know is how much Garchomp is in it.

3 Gibs, 2 Gabs, 3 Chompies, and 1 X for Skittle-eating FUN. :thumb:

I'll definately be at the next one, it'll be my last tourney for the entire summer since I'll be going on a study abroad trip for the next 2 1/2 months afterwards. At least I should be back in time for prereleases next summer though.
