Random, try living and trying to play the game in the UK and you'll really see what you dont get.I think I'm right in saying every single set so far we have been at least a month behind USA. No sniff whatsoever of pre-release tourneys, the only way to get league promos is out of ebay.Promises but no delivery on league etc etc. From roughly May we have had no support from either WOTC (apart from MTM's support) or Nintendo. All the events that we run(which are attracting big numbers,60 at the last UK Challenge) are largely supported by a small group of us master profs and every single week at my league I give out cards, prizes, promos etc out of my own personal collection. If you want a cry from the heart then this is it....Nintendo help!!

Genesis had Typhlo, Gator, Meg, Amphy, cleffa, donphan, kingdra, noctowl, focus band, magmar(a personal fav:p), murkrow, steelix, pichu, xatu(again a personal favorite), gold berry, ecogym, double gust ,elm, time capsule, dark/metal/recycle energy and seneasel/slowking if u wanna add broken cards.
~ilc

You are certainly strechting things if you want to include Genesis Ampharos and Kingdra, but there were later version in the Neo block worth playing and I assume that is what you mean. Counting your personal favorites Magmar and Xatu is not reasonable in this discussion. I would count Noctowl as an interesting more than a powerful card.

Another important point is that we may yet find some hidden gems in the two EX sets. I think it took a while before people noticed Donphan and and saw the power of Focus Band (Gold Berry was all the rage in the beginning).

Tego's list of great cards from EX is nowhere near complete, but it will be awhile before we find out what works well. Most of the Sandstorm Pokemon EX are interesting, RS Breloom has potential (how about 70 damage for (Multi)FF), both Sceptiles are good, SS Wobbuffet has great impact, Linoone looks good, the new fossils are interesting even if you don't play the evolutions, Electabuzz is a great semi-splashable basic that can attack the bench, and the basic idea of Wynaut and Dunsparce is great.

We will probably end up with the usual 4-6 decks that are more powerful than the rest, but it is hard to decide which ones they will be. Take a look at the Stage-2 Pokemon, they all seem to have potential as centerpiece for a deck.

I think the best thing about the EX set is that there is a much better balance between the colors, they all seem to be playable. Electric - mostly because there are so few Pokemon - may suffer a bit, but psychic and fighting are suddenly very playable.

The next best thing is the change in trainer engine. We are a little low on the drawing engine (but it would only take a couple of cards to fix that), but I really like the fact that we have no gust (and no Focus Band and no Gold Berry - it was bad enough before, but it would be silly with the EX Pokemon). I believe that introduces more planning in the game and hopefully will take the focus away from fast beatdown. You can now choose to sacrifice a couple of Pokemon (Fossils) when you fall behind rather than seeing your main Pokemon being gusted and the game lost just because the opponent was one step faster.

I like the lack of gusting. I don't particularly like the lack of good healers. Nurse and MooMoo are not powerful enough in this environment. Hell, even Center would be a LITTLE better for this (non-Supporter). IMO, a toned-down Gold Berry would be a good thing for this format (3 damage counters, instead of 4). Copycat and POR are not enough of a draw engine to keep the games quick and interesting. Some type of 6-card Elm or 4-5-card Oak would do nicely. Searching also took a major blow, even with Linoone, who represents a free prize for your opponent. PETM isn't strong enough, Dual Ball is too specific, Master Ball, PFC, LNS and PokeNav are too limited in terms of searching power. Some type of Pokemon Trader would help out here, but I don't wanna sound picky. The current format and idea of Pokemon TCG is better than it could have been, but not as good as it could have been (with either LC or Best Promos).

So far, about the decks, there seems to be one superpower (Scizor), and several dozen others that can make the cut as a good, possibly great, deck. Until Dragons comes out, however, there are just too many good deck ideas to say that only 4-6 will become huge. I'd say more like 10-15 (currently I'm working on a Raindance deck focusing on Swampert and Wailord, and I know of at least a dozen other decent combos that could be made with Swampert).

IMO, RS has the makings of a good set, but will never be considered as a "gamebreaking" or "game changing" set. All it did was bring in some new Pokemon, a few new decks for a Modified format, but no trainers that can greatly influence the Unlimited format. Neo block had Elm, Gold Berry, and Focus Band. Ecard block had Copycat and Town Volunteers, and possibly some more that I'm not aware of. EX block, IMO, just isn't making the cut in my book so far. Hopefully, Dragons will bring in some huge new game effects.

TEGO (Which now I know who you are since I looked at your SIG, I traded you a Feraligatr at WCSTS2001!) I still don't know where this announcement is. Could you give me a link?

I have been here, actually, playtesting thoroughly lately. I'm just hanging... =P. My area is rural, no store will host any TCG except Magic. I've tried repeatedly to get Pokemon tournaments, but to no avail. There isn't really an interest either.

But I think you are a little too optimistic... and of course I have the right to be skeptical, I'm a consumer, not an employee. =\

~ RaNd0m

I'm the one who playtested with you in that strange-smelling white tent outside the first day when only your sister, you, I and my father were there. And yes, the one who traded a cursed Feraligatr with you, just after telling everyone I hated it and wanted to tear it apart. You kept that one two weeks before you ranted in an article at Pojo how much playing Gatr sucked. :p

Here is the allmighty happy-announcements topic: http://www.pokegym.net/showthread.php?t=1065. Who doesn't jump up in their chairs when reading this?

Maybe I am too optimistic, I always have been. Just check my sig and the "Great TE quotes" to see that I can be awfully optimistic sometimes. But I want to make clear that I'm not an employee of PUI. I'm an employee of Nintendo of Norway, who happen to be Norway's distributor of the Pokémon TCG. I don't know any special inside info from them at this point, and all I know about OP etc is what I read on these boards.

Sigh, I figure it was about time that a topic like this would have been started. Well let me just say the following quick quirks of logic from my illogical brain:

Modified format as it is: Hey out with the old, lets starting building some new decks. I am tired of Elm, Bill, and company.

Upcoming OP: Its coming, patience. Start building and playtesting is my advice.
International OP: Its coming, patience. Keep in contact with local distributors and POP, but don't go SPAMMING them, also crying for help here won't do squat. The best advice is just hold unoffical tournaments and league for now.

I agree that R/S didn't add anything totally new to the game. Compared to Genesis, the only very new feature is that R/S also has new characters.

It seems to me that R/S compared to Genesis has the same problem as Ruby/Sapphire GBA compared to Gold/Silver GBC. G/S had new Pokémon including evolutions of older Pokémon, it had the new hold-item system (tools), new breeding feature, two new types (Steel and Dark) and the Special stat split-up.

All Ruby/Sapphire had compared to this was the new Special Ability system and... new Pokémon, none of them evolving from old ones. That is just like Genesis compared to the R/S expansions. Not enough new features - but simply because the GB games it's based on doesn't have enough new features to base it on.

But still, Ruby and Sapphire for the GBA and R/S for the TCG are fantastic bew releases, and R/S GBA truly is the best game in ages. People love the new GBA games and new expansions, but not for introducing new exciting game elements, just for defining the already near-perfect concept with light touches. This is both a good and a bad thing. But I do see why some people dislike it.

Myst: How can you continuously keep on posting that international is comming and all we need is a little MORE patience? *shakes head*

Even PUI are no longer indicating that International is comming... its now a 'hopefully' and an incomplete programme of events sometime in the future.

Eh, I know I'm nowhere near the competitive level of many here. Nor is there is a real Pokemon League in my area. So I am at a great disadvantage to many of you in what you talk about. I do keep up-to-date, though, on the goings-on.

I personally like the E-on idea. The relative restart has rekindled my creative juices in deck building. Just for fun, I made a half-eon, half "other sets" hybrid deck. It's quite interesting, and very fun to experiment with. Which begs to say...

It is somewhat avant guarde. That can be bad, yes, but from my perspective, it's great and I will buy the product as long as the interest in deck building continues (going on to three years now). I may be alone in that, yet I do suspect that there are others like me.

Two cents from someone on the other end of the competitive spectrum. ;)

R&S has brought massive changes to the game.

Much of the game has had a work over

only one retreat per turn
confusion now places three damage counters.
fossils counting as basics while in hand during setup.
Darkness and metal energy effects modified
Darkness effect figured before applying weakness and resistance.
Baby rule revisited...its now a pokemon power.
Double weakness
Two prizes when you KO an EX.
and probably more stuff I've left out!

Genesis did introduce new things the most significant of which were the new baby pokemon, and Pokemon Tools. These were new mechanics bolted onto the old game. But if you keep on bolting new stuff on eventually you just end up with an unwieldly mess. R&S is a significant attempt to revist the whole game.

I agree that too much change and too many features could make the game a total mess. But about Stadium cards: they were introduced two sets earlier, in Gym Heroes.

Ok people...

Alright. Here goes nothing...

I don't have a league in my area right now, but I'll always have Apprentice and mirc. That gives you a league right there. Of course, this doesn't pertain to the game selling or anything, but it keeps the fun going.

E-on is not a mistake. Also, who said that RS/SS doesn't have any power cards? That's a retarded statement. My god, LOOK at what's being played. Blaziken, Breloom, Gardevoir, Tops ex, Magmar ex, etc etc etc.

Its not as gamebreaking as Neo Gen? Of course it isn't, do you actually WANT another Sneasel and Slowking and Murkrow? I sure don't.

This format is balanced. Its great. Nothing is unbeatable like Gatr or Cargo or Scizor was. YOU HAD to tech vs those to win. In this, you don't really have to tech vs anything if you've got a solid deck.

No search ability? Linoone isn't an auto prize for your opponent btw. We still have:

Oracle
Elm's Training Method
Dual Ball
Fast Ball
A lot more that I can't think of.

Draw power is through the roof. People that only bought RS/SS cards can even compete vs. people that have all the cards. Seriously, they only need to trade for like 8 different cards out of expedition and they can make a deck.

As for the trips and stuff. I'm sure we'll get em, and if we don't there will be much raising of hell going on for sure.

One thing. WE DO NEED CONSTRUCTED TOURS. I like these Pre-Releases... they're a fun way to get cards instead of just buying them and going home and opening them. I don't see how a 20 dollar price tag DRIVES PEOPLE AWAY when they are essentially BUYING CARDS FOR A CHEAPER PRICE.

Weird.

Another thing, the baby rule wasn't restated, its just that baby pokemon are different now. I personally LOVE not having to flip for me. Wynaut is broken, just think if the little jerk had a baby power... that'd be insane.

Also, someone said something about having to sacrifice pokemon and such and still be able to come back and win cuz of lack of gust. Bravo, you rock, man. This is exactly the case and I LOVE how there is no gust (cept for Victreebell, which is the way it should be... gust in a poke).

Also, there are SOOOO many friggin cards that NOBODY has even noticed at all. Anyone take a look at Skyridge Umbreon lately? No? Didn't think so. That Body is 0wnage in this, especially vs. Gardevoir. Shuts that crap down in an instant.

Take a look at your cards again folks, don't just go "Scizor/Furret... woohooo" cuz I can tell you right now that its NOT the best deck in this format AT ALL. There's no Gold berry, it can't win every game anymore. There is still Ledian, there is Blaziken, Eggs, Gardevoir, Dusclops, whatever. Its not broken in this. NOTHING is broken in this. Not yet anyway.

Once Tours start rolling, you guys will be laughing at this topic. Random, you have a right to complain... you have nobody around you that plays. That sux, its the same here, cuz we don't have a league to run, nor do we have any actual Card Shops that sell Pokemon. Wal-Mart, Target, stores at the mall all sell the cards, but you can't host a league at those...

Don't worry rand0m, things will get better. For now, go to the prereleases, they are a lot of fun man, especially when you have someone like Meganium running them. Play on Apprentice. I've been playtesting a LOT, I can tell you that this is a whole lot of fun. I wanted RS/SS too, but I think I'm seeing that Eon might be better... weird huh? You told me on irc that its going to drive people away because they have to buy new cards. Like I said above... this isn't like Jungle and Fossil where you can just buy those sets and win a game with POKEBALL, we DO HAVE DECENT TRAINERS, and we have AWESOME POKEMON in these sets.

New kids coming into the game is good. Maybe when tours roll around all of the inactive vets will come back as well, and they should, because this is a hellafun format.

Thats it for now.

Very well said.

You know, I was playing with some people they other day in the new format, and I realized something - most of the complaining about format is coming from players who were really, really good at playing just that ONE FORMAT. But, that great thing about pokemon is that it's not just the deck that's supposed to make a winner - it's the player too.

Chaw,

Maybe I'm just spoiled, and therefore spoiling my area...

We have 2 leagues in our area now (WTH are the other stores doing???)

I get to run both, with the help of Rachel at times ;)

We also have been lucky enough to get SuperBattlezone, Prerelease Tourneys, and even the Pokemon Rocks thing in our area.

I don't care what you people say, there is more going on in Pokemon now then there ever was.

Prerelease tourneys? Started at $20, now everyone is doing them at $15, including me! Heck, my first one was only 18 (3 a pack), so, that has got to be the single best thing going this time.

Random, even had the event on Saturday to accomadate you....but you did not come (I know, job and life gets in the way sometimes)

This is the GOLDEN age of deckbuilding. Even with old modified at worlds....Scizor or Cargo or Gatr, some rogue decks climbed the charts, but reminded me of the Gatr/Crobat days of old. Not good days for the game.

Check out all of the different deck ideas, and, yes, some are going to rise to the top.

We have the same deck that one week owns our league tourney, the next week comes in at 1-2!

KabutopsEX
RaichuEX
GardyEX
Blaziken/Camerupt (haven't tried it, WATCH OUT!!!) like Typhlo with Attitude
TyphlosionEX
Scizor/Furret/liquid
Shiftry (Holo w/ mem berry)
Slaking
SandslashSS/RaichuEX

and my new favorite, which I have titled the Chameleon..
Alakazam (EX) with Kecleon and Wobbuffet!

Talk about a total counter to everything!!!

No telling which deck will end up as "Tier 1" or "Tier 2" for tourney play. Heck, it could be some poor poke we have forgotten all about (Victrebell)

This always happens at the beginning of a block era. Remember the good old days, when Rocket-On was named that everyone thought Steelix would be unbeatable? I do. Remember how many Steelix decks were actually Good (OK, Kabutops/Steelix was fun, but, heh)

I wish they would bring out some gust, or some energy removal (regular, without the flip!) to contol this era of BEP (Big Evolved Pokemon) "I take you, you take me, let's get set up on turn 3, with an attack that does 100 damage every time it hits, knocks any pokemon not named EX"

This will be an elite year for Pokemon Tourneys, between now and next summer. The first prereleases, the first OP, and the first regional and state championships! The competition will be FIERCE, at least in our area. Myst is tired of my Wyoming jokes (sorry man, but it's fun).

So relax random, and come on down to the Dragon Prerelease....held on Saturday for your playing pleasure, and slam with the big dogs of Missouri.

M45

I'll tell ya this too, I was looking at the leauge listing ... there are a LOT more actual leauges with actual play times now than there has been in quite a while. Sure, Wotc had that huge list of battle zones, but hardly any of the stores listed actually ran them.

And like you just said, M45, there are so many different decks that can compete now.

At this point in time, I will not buy Nintendo product until something is announced. There's no point to it, especially since I know the odds are I won't even have the chance to use the cards. =\

Don't know what to say man. I'm struggling to make a positive comment here; guess you are, too.

IF this is how you feel about Nintendo OP and how you intend to act toward Nintendo cards, then could I ask that you explain why you were such a STRONG proponent of EX-on format for Nintendo OP? I'm sure there is a logical connection between advocating here and on Pojo to ONLY have Nintendo cards in modified AND then to say you will NOT BUY Nintendo cards (and I'm not being sarcastic). I'm just not seeing the connection and I wish you'd explain it.

OP started, in the US, as advertised, October 1. Now, if you've seen it, there is a plan for Television advertising of the TCG in November. There is mention of City, Regionals & Worlds. I believe they mean it. If a guy like Tego(lduck) can be enthusiastic, well, at least Illinois is in the US.

I'm sorry the format has you down. I'm sorry they don't have an STS announced for you! (I'm sorry they don't have one announced for me! Honestly, the Stadium Challenges, decapitated of 15+ were a bust, esp. for my family. MTs did their creative best and I loved the Prof tourney, but that was 100% silver lining). Go ahead and wait for the date announcements to buy, if you must...

First off, Mega: I want to come down to St. Louis BADLY. I WILL make it down eventually man, I know you've been accomodating for me :p... and I WILL take off of my job for Pokemon ONCE I get my license. (Jan 10 :p) It seems you've been doing an EXcellent (hrhrhr I punned) job down there.

Bulbasnore, I see where you're coming from, but let me be more clear. I supported the EX-On (Or RS-On as I like to call it) format CHIEFLY from a business perspective. In my opinion, it would have allowed more players to join the game and made more money for Nintendo. I don't even mind Expedition On, it's a decent format. I also saw PhoenixSong say that some players only want a format they're good in... which I assume that was targeted at me. It had NOTHING to do with how much I liked the format... even I'm one to admit that Expedition On is more fun to play and probably has more potential than Ruby/Sapphire On.

I have not, and will not buy cards, until I have a reason too. I might add I didn't buy any Expedition-Skyridge from WotC either... because I didn't have a need for it. Because I purely play at the competitive level, I work on my decks virtually, and then buy the cards I need off Ebay. I've found it's cheaper for me, and because I'm responsible for my own finances now (because my parents decided that once I got a job, I was responsible for ALL my financial needs :p) I'm not going to waste them.

This isn't a boycott of Nintendo, heavens no. I support what they're doing. But I want to know if my $$$ is going to be worth it... and that's just pure consumer sense.

Right random. So with that last post you made, the only thing we needed to be discussing here was that Nintendo start a Challenge Tour WITH TRIPS and a WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP. Also, stuff at Gencon like the Fan App Tourney this year would be godly awesome too. Just SOMETHING HUGE at Gencon and other conventions.... plus worlds... plus trips and we'll all be happy campers lol.

I stated before, expedition-on is fine for getting new players into the game, I mean seriously, they only need to get 4 Professor Oak's Research or Copycat which they can easily trade for... and they can make a deck with whatever cards they have from RS/SS.

For us vets to stay in the game, we also needed some incentive. Rotating out Skyridge after almost NO playtime with it would suck for us. Now, with this new format, we get to use some cards that weren't powerful in the other modified... the stuff we won at gencon, origins etc...

I think they (nintendo) have done the right thing here. They just at least have to come out and say "hey, all you guys and gals... we're preparing for a World Championship this spring/summer, and we're also having Challenge Tours for you to earn the trips there too."

Once that happens, this becomes probably the best year we've had in a while, right?

I think so. Happy gaming all, watch the post count go up in all the forums once we get an official announcement of tours and champs hehe.

I definitely think Nintendo is taking this game on the right direction. I mean, just today, I just learned that they're going to have the Pokemon Rocks America event one weekend and the following weekend the Dragon Prerelease tournament- both that are only an hour drive from my place. I don't know about all these people who are posting "Pro-Wotc" arguments, but I don't remember wizards having all these events back-to-back like this. In fact, I don't remember hardly ANY AT ALL in my area!!! So, if this game is picking up steam now, also with city/state championships plus constructed tourneys plus a good mall tour or two, it can only get better!

Things are looking up Nintendo, just keep up the good work!
