Good Rod and Junk Arm

So, I've seen the discussion of Junk Arm and I'm not impressed by the recovery of Flower Shop Lady.
Why not just play Good Rod?

If you have a pokemon and another Good Rod in the discard, if you have another Good Rod in your hand, you can get that pokemon from the discard. Junk Arm can't do that. If you have to discard a Junk Arm with Sage's Training instead of Good Rod it's completely useless. And it's not a supporter and works almost as a 50% chance of getting a trainer from the discard if you need it and 100% getting a pokemon from the discard almost (no Unown E's or Shiftry's please). The only downside is that there is no 100% of getting a trainer. So what's the consensus? Can't easily replace Junk Arm? Is it more versatile? Discuss.

There's no discussion, really. It's too slow.

I think you skipped over the part where it puts the selected card on top of your deck, not directly into your hand. Junk Arm puts a trainer directly into your hand, and Flower Shop Lady hits multiple targets to shuffle back into the deck. Good rood not only has a chance of failing to find a target, but it just puts it on top of the deck.

Good rod can be pretty good if you just want to get back something random... like, pluspowers and stuff. Think of it like an extra junk arm.

Good rod is one of the few Pokemon Recovery trainers we have besides revive which only allows you to put a basic pokemon from the discard onto your bench. Good rod could work if you flip accordingly, then play a draw card or magnetic draw to grab what you need in a flash. It may have potential in some decks, but I feel that junk arm is dominant. I run flower shop lady because it can give me a full line of pokemon, and I don't have a 50% chance of getting what I want.

Confirmation bias much?

He has a point.

If you can lose on a coin flip, then that's obviously bad.

The difference between reversal and catcher is 100%. Literally, catcher is 100% better.

Good Rod isn't good, because you need to coin flip for a chance of having a good effect. Junk arm is good for trainers, flower shop for pokemon.

I don't even know what Good Rod does exactly. I'm just pointing out that him saying that it will "fail you" (flip the way you don't want it to) MORE than 50% of the time is not true. There is always a 50/50 chance of getting heads or tails, regardless of whether the person flipping wants it to be heads or tails (and I assume it might differ on the situation, with Good Rod). Saying it'll fail do the wrong thing when you most want it do is fallacious and probably confirmation bias.

It's actually a 25% chance of doing what you need it to. Here are the 4 outcomes:

Need Trainer-Get Trainer
Need Trainer-Get Pokemon
Need Pokemon- Get Trainer
Need Pokemon- Get Pokemon

Throw in to the deal that you may not have the other type of card in your discard and the card can completley fail.

Well it does not always fail, but there is more against it than to it. If you play it when you need a pokemon and only a pokemon... its hard. But, if you have pokemon comunication in your discard, and the pokemon you need in the discard, but you also know that you have another of the pokemon in your deck, well there you have it! If it lands heads, you get your pokemon, if it lands tails, you get your pokemon comunication and you can search the pokemon you need. Thats the most efective way i can think of now cuz im in a hurry, but i bet using it for non situational you can increase your chances. But its not like junk arm not even close, cuz junk arm gets it in your hand and good rod doesnt, and its 100% you get the trainer you want... but no pokemon

I saw on pokebeach.com that a super rod is coming out and does what Night Maintenance did. 3 combination of basic energy and pokemon. So I do hate the flower shop lady recovery. But good rod can ruin you. I tried it..

The thing you forgot is out of those 4 outcomes 2 of them are favorable.

Need Trainer-Get Trainer YAY
Need Trainer-Get Pokemon BOO :frown:
Need Pokemon- Get Trainer BOO :frown:
Need Pokemon- Get Pokemon YAY

Looks like 50% to me.

You don't always want to max out your shuffle ins. You may want less of one or the other for various reasons.

It can only do one at a time given what you expect it to do. If you need both a Pokemon AND a Trainer, you can only get one. 50% of what already is 50% is now 25% overall.

Flower Shop Lady is not a bad recovery card, but it's a supporter and sometimes it can't be recovered if you're playing something like Professor Juniper or Sage's training, whereas Good Rod you can recover with Junk Arm. Right now I'm playing 3 Junk Arm and one Good Rod as a replacement for Junk Arm, and Flowershop Lady, and Rescue Energy.
