Technically, it doesn't look at itself, so if there's nothing there (pokemon or trainer), you'd be playing the card for no effect.

The short answer is: no.

Strictly speaking, when you play a Trainer, it doesn't go into the discard until after it has resolved.
People often (very often!) shortcut that and put it straight into the discard pile.
But that's a short cut and not what is actually happening, in game terms.
