Great Ball Question

Set up:
During my turn I play a great ball. While searching my deck I didn't find the basic pokemon that I wanted. There are other basic pokemon in the deck.

Question:
Do I still have to take a basic pokemon out of my deck and place it onto my bench?

No. Any deck search for a specific type of card can fail if you want it to.
Your deck is not public knowledge.
Note that if you are seaching for "any card" then that can't fail as it is known that you do have "cards" in your deck.
