Great Lakes T32 Report

On Friday afternoon, Alex and Kyle pick me up to head up to South Bend with Scott. We spend the three hour drive happy that we don’t have to ride in Kyle’s car. When we get there team mates Matt and Jared show up. Scott decides to switch decks, and Matt and Jared are playing new decks, so they’re all in for a full night of play testing. I’ve been playing my straight Donphan deck with the same build for about a month, so I end up turning in early, and enjoy my full night of wonderful, wonderful sleep. I’m glad I did, because from the moment I wake up the next morning I feel nauseous from my nerves. Regionals was my third tourney, you know… We get there and meet up with Graham and Megan, plus Dustin and Kyle E. The team is fully assembled now. It’s even harder not to be nervous sitting with Alex and Kyle, with seasoned players showing up to chew the fat with them. I tell myself, ‘I can only play what’s in front of me.’ It gets me through a lot of situations.
R1: Ricky w/Jumpluff
I can’t really remember what happened, except that I belted Donphans that I shouldn’t have, which allowed me to keep the game fairly even(on the losing side) up to the point where he took his last two prizes off of a mass attack knockout. Ricky was nice though, and the first person I’ve met from IL.
0-1
R2: Unhappy Kid w/ Sceptile
I opened with a poor start, two Phanpys and no supporters/means of setting up draw power. My opponent, however, had an even worse start, and my Stage 1 simply outsped his stage 2. I only had to take three prizes with the two Donphans I set up. I don’t like it when games end like that.
1-1
R3: Pokedad w/ Ampharos
Pokedad was a nice enough guy, and I felt bad when he flipped his lone Mareep. He played another mareep, I set up a turn 2 Donphan and OHKO all of his pokemon, including an Ampharos Prime with a belted ‘phan. I run through his basics, pulling up 2 benched electikes to block a power wave, which he wouldn’t have had the energy for anyway. But better safe than sorry!
2-1
R4: Big Guy w/ LuxChomp
I’m nervous because I’ve never gone this many matches in a row without facing a horrible matchup in a tournament, so I do a little jump for joy inwardly when he flips his SP starter. Again, I can’t really remember how the match went, except that I hit a few reversals to shut down his attackers, and it really slowed him down.
3-1
R5: Andrew w/ LuxChomp
I can’t believe my luck when I see that I’m facing another SP deck. I just hope that he isn’t running anything much that I haven’t seen. Again, I shut down his attackers early on, taking a break to get rid of his Misdreavus with an energy attach ed, because I don’t like the look of it. I win fairly quickly off of a good set up, and now I’m really feeling the pressure.
4-1
R6: AJ w/Dialga G
I find out I’m going to be playing AJ, who I know, and now I’m shaking. I sit down and, hey! Alex and Kyle are on either side of me  I still can’t think straight, and lose out quickly and badly, taking only one prize. I hadn’t seen a Dialga deck, and although I knew what it was supposed to do, couldn’t think straight enough to even keep the game close. I’m not upset about losing, and actually start feeling a little better.
4-2
R7: Joel w/ Gyarados
I had played Joel before, and was pretty sure he’d be playing Gyarados again. He was, so I played quickly, with the aim of at least keeping the game tied, which I did off of benched pokemon. I know he’s been playing the deck for at least a month, so I have little hope of his misplaying, and if the Gyarados player knows what they’re doing, it’s an impossible match for a straight Donphan deck. He starts with two Sableyes, and I take one out, but he still gets his G-dos set up turn two. It’s just him taking a one prize lead from then on.
4-3
R8: ??? w/???
5-3
Alex and Kyle finish 6-2 and 7-1, so they order their decks for top 32. Scott keeps telling me to order my deck and I say no, I’m not going to Top Cut. Guess what? All three of my losses top cut, so I end up 30th out of 32. I don’t get as nervous as I was earlier on, because I find out I’m going to be playing Ricky again. Oh, and Kyle ordered my deck the night before to be nice, so I have to hunt him down and have him do it again for deck check.
Top 32- Ricky w/Jumpluff
Game 1- Essentially the same game as this morning. I manage to keep it tied up to the end. I’ll be glad if I force him to really work for the win, and I feel that I do.
Game 2- Ricky goes first. I can only get out one Claydol and 2 Donphan before I run out of steam. I take two prizes to his three before I’m out of benched pokemon. Oh well!
Alex and Kyle both face tough matchups and poor setups, so we all pack up and leave, and make it home at midnight.
Sorry about the poor report, but I wasn’t expecting to top cut so I didn’t even get everyone’s names down, let alone what happened per match. I can't even remember one of my matchups >.< (Plus it’s my first…) But I figured I ought to try writing a report to get used to it. You never know when you’ll need to do another!

Proud of ya, kid! Now my expectations are only going to go up for you from now on! Also, I'm pretty sure there were more than 2 girls in top cut, so you weren't as alone as you thought.

Hey it's AJ. You played great our entire game, Donphan's just not as good without his body, that expert belt + 3 pluspower play was awesome caught me so off guard luckily I could recover or you def would of had me.

Good luck the rest of the season, see you guys at Nationals.

AJ

I was your R5 opponent. GJ, haven't gotten steamrolled like that in awhile - the Mismagius was really my only out to making it a game, and you nipped that threat in the bud.

Andrew

Ahhh, you probably don't remember me but I'm Brandon.

It's awesome you made top cut!
Now I have to look out for you and Kyle!

Well good luck and maybe I'll see you guys at nationals.

Andrew- thaaaanks... alex and kyle were teasing me 'cause I was tellling them about it, and they asked why I hit the misdeavus when I didn't know what it did, and my answer was "Beacause! ...I will have none of that silly stuff in my game!"

Brandon- Yep, they showed me who you are and I remember now! I'm getting to know everyone as they come up to chat :) and thanks!
