Gym leader names

I don't know if anyone have talked about this before, but when I was looking through my RSE guide a couple months ago I noticed that the gym leaders named had to do with what type they trained! Here are some examples:

Roxanne uses Rock type Pokemon, Rox = Rocks
Brawly uses Fight type Pokemon, Brawl = Fight
Wattson uses Electric type Pokemon, Watts = Watts(Power of a light bulb)
Flannery usesFire type Pokemon, Having trouble with this one maybe like a Flame?
Norman uses Normal type Pokemon, Norma(N) = Norma(L)
Winona uses Fly type Pokemon, ?
Tate and Liza uses Psychic type Pokemon, ?
Wallace (Juan) uses Water type Pokemon, ?

As you can tell I am having some troubles with a few of them. Can anyone help me out?

They've done that for every Gameboy iteration, so yeah, it's nothing new.

For Tate & Liza, switch them around and the sorta sound like Levitate.

Yeah it's true.
Brock = Rock
Misty = Mist
Lt. Surge = dunno how to spell it for sure but yo know.
Erika = wait hld ona second... OMG I forgot.
Koga = ummm... NinGA KoGA? I don't know.
Sabrina = ... ok I'm terrible.
Blaine = Flame
Giovani = HE'S an exception. I think.

does anyone know the japanese names of the characters? that could possibly clear up some of them.
falkner=falcon
bugsy=bug
whitney=white?(as in color of pokemon cards)
morty=?
chuck=throw=fighting
jasmine=?
pryce=ice
claire=dragonair?

Yeah Clair does have like what 3 Dragonair or something. Clair could also = air and then like alot of the dragons are part flying. Yeah the Japanese probaly have something to do with it I mean Jasmine = Steel? XD

Tate and Liza could have that psychic twin thing going on, since twins are thought to be linked to each other or something.

Yep;

Brock > Rock
Misty > Mist
Lieutenant Surge > Surge (i.e. power surge)
Erika > ???
Koga > (Ninja name that suggests stealthy strategy)
Sabrina > Refers to the Teenage Witch, probably
Blaine > ???
Giovanni > ???
Lorelei > The name suggests harshness?
Bruno > Try "Bruto"; a fighting brute.
Agatha > Stereotypical old-person name, maybe? Old>Ghosts?
Lance > ???

Falkner > Falcon
Bugsy > Bug
Whitney > White
Morty > Mortify
Jasmine > (a type of rock. Why not something that refers to steel?)
Chuck > Throw (judo skills; martial arts, fighting...)
Pryce > ???
Clair > ???
Will > ???
Karen > ???

Roxanne > Rock
Brawly > Brawl
Wattson > Watt
Flannery > Flame(?)
Norman > Normal
Winona > Wind
Liza&Tate > A psychic connection, but the "levitate" suggestion seems interesting too.
Wallace > ???
Sidney > ???
Phoebe > Maybe from the show "Charmed"? Got me on this one...
Glacia > Glacier
Drake > Dragon (far-fetched idea, though...)
Steven > Steel

A lance is a medievil weapon, most often used for jousting. I imagine the typical knight in shining armor would take one to fight off dragons as well, or something.

Pryce > ???

Rhymes with ice.

Will > ???

He uses his will to make stuff happen. Not sure if I can explain that better.

Karen > ???

She was the Dark trainer, right? I can only guess that they went with an opposite on this one. Care being a psuedo-opposite of dark.

Sidney > ???

Insidious.

Drake > Dragon (far-fetched idea, though...)

That's correct. In Beowulf, the dragon that he fights (and I think kills him) is described as a "fire drake".

drake=draco(a constellation with the representation of a dragon)
giovanni=geo-vanni(geo meaning earth/world)
blaine=blain(which means inflamatory swelling) or just blai-z(fire) combine blaze+pain(i remember him saying something concerning wounds/pain type imagery)
lance=weapons used to fight dragons(thus a dragon trainer/tamer would be familiar and a master of such a weapon)
erika=erica(it's a genus of shrubbery plants(some producing nice flowers))
pryce=rhymes with ice
clair=lair(probably a better one out there)...air?
karen=?
will=he uses his will/power in instances
wallace=wall-is=wall-ice(if you can imagine pronouncing is as ice... which shouldnt be hard)(phoenetic interpretation)
sidney=insiduous

a few of those were taken from orange soda
