Hi all,
I'm new to deckbuilding but have collected the cards for a while. I started a few years ago with my fiance and we just now picked up buying packs again.
The series we've collected so far are
D&P *67%*
D&P Legends Awakened *90%*
D&P Majestic Dawn *92%*
EX Power Keepers *complete*
EX Crystal Guardians *76%*
EX Dragon Frontiers *86%*
Stormfront *59%*
Black & White *88% newest set that got us back into the cards :D**

We just play against each other here at home and I was just trying to get some insight on my deck. After reading online I realized that we would get destroyed if we went to any locals to play so I was curious for some assistance. Here is what I have.

I realize this is way too many Pokémon for my deck but here you go.

Pokémon
Reshiram EX *BW*
2 Tepig *BW*
2 Pignite *BW*
2 Emboar *BW*

2 Charmander *EX PK*
2 Charmeleon *EX PK
1 Charizard *EX PK*

2 Machop *EX PK*
2 Machoke *EX PK*
1 Machamp *EX PK*

3 Rhyhorn *D&P*
1 Rhydon *D&P*
1 Rhyperior *D&P*
1 Rhyperior Lv X *D&P LA*

ENERGY

8 Fighting
8 Fire

TRAINER

1 Speed Stadium
2 Professor Juniper
1 Quick Ball
2 Luxury Ball
2 Poké Ball
1 Pokémon Communication
2 Energy Retrieval
2 Energy Search
3 Poké Drawer +
3 Potion *B&W 30 damage*
2 Switch

I have a few cards to let me search my deck for pokemon as well as discard pile, a few potions to heal, and a few cards to search decks/discards for energy. Should I focus on putting less Pokémon in my deck? Geting rid of the Machop/Machoke/Machamp combo and stick with the Emboar/Charizard/Reshiram? I like Emboar's ability to let me attach fire energy to a Pokémon, This let's me build up my Char/Resh on the bench.

As far as a strategy goes, I'm fairly new to it. If there are better trainers out there that I should run with, or anything, please point me in the right direction.
Up for any suggestions! Thanks

Nice collection you got there! As for the deck, if you just plan on playing with your fiancée and friends I can suggest some tweaks, but if you want to play at tournaments there's only certain sets allowed each year, it's called the Modified Format. At the moment the legal sets are all the Heart Gold Soul Silver sets and all the Black and White sets. Luckily ReshiBoar is an OK deck for Modified and it pretty much just uses Reshirams and Ability Emboar, so you already have a few of the cards and will be used to how it plays, simply search the forums for a Reshiboar deck for some tips.
Even if you're just playing casually I'd suggest taking out the Power Keepers Charizard line, it was never a good card. Maybe see about your decks water weakness, instead of those fighting Pokemon, use some grass Pokemon with water resistance as your backup plan. Finally, if you have so much from the D&P sets you should have some Rosanne's Research and Bebe's Search, they should go in.
(PS. If you want to mix things up a bit, have a look at my sig. below, it's a fun version of Pokemon where almost any card is allowed and you use a 100 card deck!)

Thanks for the reply. Yeah I have swapped my deck's out this past week just trying different things. I usually pick an energy type, then whatever it's weakness is, I peak that energy type's weakness for my other type of pokémon.

I checked into those two cards you suggested, Roseanne's & Bebe's, but those are in two of the D&P sets I do not have :( I will check into other T/S/S cards I have from my collection. I also have some cards from some of the older sets, EX Deoxys, Base, Jungle, Fossil, Team Rocket, etc.

We only have 2 Emboar and the 1 Reshiram and they are both in my deck. We buy packs and have lucked up and had great pulls so far out of 25 packs. Going to try purchasing the last 14 rares online to finish the set. We've picked up the FA Zekrom in a 4 pack of boosters on ebay & 2 Secret Rare Pikachus out of 2 packs we bought at Target xD I try to just collect the whole set instead of buying cards to build decks.

Thanks for explaining the rules about the modified & legal decks. We don't plan on doing any tournaments, not sure how we'd fit in there. 27 & 25 years old here >.> Both with full time jobs and just bought a house so we've been busy at home. When money gets straight again then we will look into some of the newer sets so we can actually have a "legal deck" to practice with.

I wouldn't worry about your age, me and my girlfriend are as old as you guys! We would be playing in tournaments still if it interested us, but the current Modified format doesn't appeal to us, out of all the sets that are legal only a tiny portion of the cards are playable due to a select few overpowered cards, mostly Basic Pokemon. I run a local League that's dedicated to variant formats such as the one I mentioned, it's much more fun being able to utilise your whole collection rather than essentially bin half your collection each year.

Anyway! If you've got Base cards, some of the best Trainers ever are in that. Bill, Oak, Energy Removal and Gust of Wind to name a few. Nice job on pulling the full art Zekrom, it makes a fine "ex" for in 150 ;)

One idea also to get you started in building decks and playing. Is when you do have some extra cash, pick up a Theme deck of the Newer set for each of you. They are Pre-constructed decks that will help you learn how to play. Also you can take cards out of these decks and replace them with even better cards to change tha strategy. Great for starting up in the Pokemon TCG. Also if you look in the Picture Gallery, you'll find every card in the Current format to get ideas for decks.

Yeah when we started collecting B&W we found the green tornado theme deck and picked it up to have some of the newer cards. The theme decks just have a ton of Pokémon and not enough good T/S/S cards. I think I'll wait until the next set comes out in the fall to start collecting again then I can be up to date with the newest edition and will have plenty of time to learn strategies and practice with different decks.
