I play the game. It's one of the few games that aren't so focused on modified-only competition. Because there have been very few official events, the fans run the events and it is more open to cool themes (play only these type of figures) and more acceptance for older figures. It's the main reason why I can afford to continue to play the game and not really afford to play Pokemon. Because of this hard casual side to the game, it doesn't matter much if a figure is overpowered. Wizkids, the company that produces the game, doesn't have to be on their toes to create hard counters in most cases. If it becomes too much of a problem, venues just house-rule it banned.
If you love comic books, Heroclix is the best game out there for you. They follow comic storylines, produce the fan-favorites, and are always coming up with new ideas to make the game more fun.
It's really easy to get into because the game revolves from individual figures, not specific combos. So, a new player could eBay a few single figures and start out great. When a new set comes out, buy a few more singles, and keep adding.
You rarely see BDIFs, or best figures in formats, the metagame almost never gets stagnant or reduced down to a few figures that either you play or you lose.
