Pokémon TCG: Sword and Shield—Brilliant Stars

HGSS on starters

Smeargle is all I can think of really...people need to be weened off Unown Q anyways, learn to pay Retreat Costs again imo.

I can almost guarantee some people will cling to free retreat and tech in Dodrio with Retreat Aid...

@Mama_Luigi: Figured since tyroge is one of the lesser played cards...

The anti-starter will probably be Sawk.

there are a few others that were left off of the list above, though.

Tropius (mainly for only grass decks)
Mew Prime (probably the most versatile choice available for psychic decks)
Slow Poke (limited, but not terrible)

You will probably also see more basics of important stage 1 cards paired with Elms and Communication. Vulpix, Sunkern, Lilypup, and a few others come to mind.

Eh, eventually they'll realize Dodrio isn't worth teching, much as past cards like him have never been really used :thumb:

^GREAT find.

Why are people doubting Smeargle? We still have Switch and Warp Point... you would just have to integrate those cards into the engine. Trainerlock will not be viable until our summer set.

I like Cleffa a LOT, but I dislike that the "baby flipping" effect is known before your opponent attacks.

Also, Smoochum could be a good counter-starter, disabling any starter your opponent has.

Warp Point is MD, so we dont have it:(

Yoyo the reason folks are iffy about Smeargle is Professor Juniper. Having to discard a potentially great hand can be a fast track to a game loss.

The opponent has to be holding nothing but Juniper for the forced usage to occur. That "lone Supporter which is Juniper" scenario probably won't be that common, and we don't know if Juniper itself will be common either. I think a lot of people are going to go the safer PONT and/or Copycat route, at least for a while. There is also the chance that the hand of the Smeargle player is bad or played down enough to discard without any drawbacks even if Juniper is forced.

No Juniper doesn't have to be the lone supporter, it just has to be the only playable supporter. Particularly when we are talking about "starters", then if the opponent is holding Juniper and Twins, or Black Belt, or Flower Shop Lady, etc., then you are forced to use the Juniper.

"Nothing but Juniper" and a hand full of Supporters that clearly can't be copied are the same thing.

haha i was scrolling through the thread looking for relincanth. i have it in my kingdra prime speed build. done decent so far in test games

Farfetch'd and Girafarig are decent starters. Both are from HS and have one retreat. Farfetch'd lets you draw two cards and its second attack does 20 damage for :colorless: and you switch Farfetch'd with one of your benched pokemon. Girafarig searches your deck for two energy for :colorless:.

I like the ideas of these different starters. For me I would use Mantine for water decks that uses the legends tnat are water types, and Stantler, Smergle, & the others for almost any deck.
