For the ability, where do the energy come from? Your hand? Your discard pile? Your deck? Any combination?
If you cannot attach 3 different basic energy (based on limitations from answers to the above question), can you use the ability or does Ho-Oh-EX stay in the discard?

For the attack, if all of the energy are fire, does it do 20 damage or 40 damage? Does 'each different' start with the second type of energy?

Looking at an actual card, it is clear that they come from the discard pile.

If you have less than three different Basic energy cards in the discard pile, you do as much as you can.

The card says "20+", so that would be 40 damage with all Fire.
