Pokémon TCG: Sword and Shield—Brilliant Stars

How prevalent will the non-EX Rayquaza be?

It has been stated in the past that Weakness and Resistance are not considered "effects" but fundamental aspects of the game, like HP itself, and Pokebeach has a solid track record for translations: not perfect by any means but a solid record.

I noticed today that the english giratina ex scan that pokebeach has doesn't specify weakness/resistance, and the japanese wording for both giratina's first attack and rayquaza's second attack are the same. so it will be affected by weakness/resistance. probably.

Knuckle Down (Machoke - Triumphant)
Q. Machoke's "Knuckle Down" attack says the amount of damage is "not affected by Poke-Powers, Poke-Bodies, or any other effects on the Defending Pokemon". Does that mean it ignores Weakness & Resistance too?
A. Weakness & Resistance are not considered as effects on the Defending Pokemon, so they are not ignored. (Jun 9, 2011 PUI Rules Team)

So the basic guideline now is that if it does not specify Weakness and Resistance, it should be affected by them.

Rayquaza the secret rare

Now that it is known that Rayquaza will be in our set as a shiny secret rare, but with no regular version, how prevelant will it be? Will scarcity keep it out of BR and Regionals lists? Will people fork up the cash for it, even though it might have its Dragon Selection version printed in our november set? Will we even see Dragon Selection cards stateside? Where do you expect the price to settle at?

Mewtwo was a 60 $ card at one point, yet almost every deck played at least 2 copies of it. Rayquaza will see play.

Mewtwo at least had a Regular and Full art version, and you were guaranteed to get at least 2 Regular EXs and 1 Full Art in each box.
There are 4 Shinys in this set, and if they boxes end up having the same distribution as before(1 in 3 boxes) Rayquaza will be very rare to find. My cruddy math puts it at 1/3*1/4 = 1 in 12 boxes will have a Rayquaza in it.

2(1/6)+1(1/6)=1 in 2 boxes would have some version of Mewtwo in it.
A player would have to buy around 4 boxes worth of cards to get 2 Mewtwos.
A player would have to buy around 24 boxes worth of cards to get 2 Rayquazas.

If I use your Mewtwo price as a measure of its rarity, and Rayquaza's rarity is a factor of 6 more, that would put Rayquaza's price at $360!!!

My point is, people will always pay whatever it costs to obtain the best cards. Therefore, it will see plenty of play.

Assuming it is worth seeing play; Mewtwo EX was popular because it was the best Pokemon EX of its set (making it the best Pokemon EX available at the time), and even now it's still in the running for that title. Contrast that with Rayquaza, that would mostly be played to exploit Dragon Weakness or perhaps a donk deck.

And battle roads are gonna be swarmed with, go figure, dragon decks. Rayquaza will be a huge play in our upcoming BRs.

That is assuming BR are still as important. We dont have all the new information on them, and we will be getting the regular one the set after. The only event people will need Ray for will be the Regs that happens prior. I dont see anyone shelling out 40 + bucks for this guy when they can wait for the 6 dollar version.

I'm sure there are some billionares playing this game that don't mind paying ridicilious prices for cool cards. But I see your point about BRs maybe not being so important anymore.

You don't have to be a "billionaire" for the irritatingly high prices to be within reach. Obviously any fool can overextend on credit (which by this point I join the ranks of that being "any credit") to buy cards, but simply being "middle class" with Pokemon your primary hobby (and the rest of your financial ducks in a row), you can still afford these overpriced pieces of shiny cardboard. If you're playing based solely on "allowance" yes it is tough, but as long as you've got the determination and means to earn money, its out there.

You'll probably have to work to play, and if the job market is really bad, it can be really challenging. Not because I expect 8-13 year-olds to be lying about their age to get non-paper routes, but because adults may be competing for such jobs. Once you're old enough, if you can land even a minimum wage job, after taxes and expenses your paycheck should have enough for you to do some charitable giving, save up for whatever, and still buy some cards. If you want to run a deck that has a full playset of this Rayquaza... pick a different deck (unless you do have that much disposable income).

Right now we've got one thread explaining how Altarchomp (or Gartaria or whatever you want to call it) isn't performing as well as hoped after the testing a lot of us have been doing since we learned of it. I'm not counting it out, but I'm not relying on it either. Dark Trance decks rely on some specific combos for their true strength, and I've already been planning counters (Klingklang decks brought that about early).

If we don't get the promo version (I've seen the artwork, shadowing out or deleting Nobunaga shouldn't be hard) it will be bad, but this card isn't Mewtwo EX, it doesn't belong in every deck upon release (even if one or two really could use it and others could consider it).

What happens if we never get Dragon Selection, or the Nobunga promo in english?

We adapt. Consider players already stating that Garchomp/Altaria is overrated. Dark Trance decks will likely have one or two Dragons: Hydreigon and a Zweilous; I'd think Deino would be better as a Dark-Type since that allows it to be a target for Dark Patch before Evolving. Rayquaza EX needs big Energy to OHKO another Pokemon EX, and both Eel and Boar variants have other vulnerabilities.

The rare Rayquaza was an easy answer (and possible potent donk Pokemon), but not the only answer.:thumb:

Am i missing something or will this be the a shiny specific card i do not see any non shiny normal rayqyazas in the set

the complaints about expensive cards sparked my memory, and after some digging I found THIS thread again. If you look into a few pages, you find people COMPLAINING that cards weren't worth much money. Now, it's just the opposite. I guess the community is just impossible to please sometimes.

If people really wish to complain, try addressing the Rarity Scheme in general. Even though TCG players aren't the actual big buyers of Pokemon, I really wish cards were equally rare except for assorted special treatment cards. Collectors are all about Holo and Reverse Holo and Alternate Art and Full Art cards.

Though I suppose to keep collectors from rioting (and Draft interesting), we could still have Uncommons and Rares in there. Perhaps use that as a function of complexity; that way really challenging cards are a bit less common and not baffling newbies or Limited format Judges so much. If you need any more rarities (or even to control the lower ones), get players used to "lower rarity" re-releases. People won't complain if they know reprints are coming, or at least likely to be coming. If the normal versions of cards aren't so hard to get to begin with, people worry about card prices dropping, because they shouldn't climb so high to begin with.
