I miss PokéShipping!

Sadly, I'm one of those people who stopped watching the anime when Misty left the show, but to be honest, I missed a lot of episodes of that series.

Now that I look back on my childhood, a lot of my Pokémon watching involved scouting for AAML hints.

I read something a while back that said Misty wouldn't be returning to the show as a permanent character, and my question is, "Why, Japan?! Why?!"

Maybe Misty isn't as popular as she is over here. Japan emphasizes the characters and pokemon that people want to see more than the ones people don't want to see. Its just how things work. They can't cater to everyone so they cater to the largest audience possible.

Honestly, that's true for every show -- Japanese or not; however, I don't know how accurate of a statement that is. If there was a poll I could refer to, then maybe.

It could also be that they're waiting for the right moment for her to return. After all, Ash is only a slightly bit more mature than he was 12 years ago (for us American audiences.)

I doubt the scriptwriters have the entire show written out or have even thought about the next five years down the line. They're only beginning to introduce the first of the new Gen. V Pokemon anyway.

That's true. All shows have that same trend regardless of country, but in long running anime like Pokemon, or Shonen anime/manga characters tend to pop up more because of popularity not because of actual plot.

I wouldn't know the difference since I've never actually watched Pokemon in Japanese.

I doubt it as well. Its a kids show that they are milking like crazy so I don't see a need for them to plan it out all that much. Pokemon is interesting in that they can keep doing the same pattern and continue it indefinitely. I honestly can't see an end to Pokemon until it dies out, but who knows they may bring back Misty with enough fan input.

Heck fan favorites in other anime shows like Bleach are gone for really really long periods of time and they still remain popular and return volumes later making the reader giddy and happy to see them once more. Maybe this is the case with Misty.

I'm really hoping so because the Orange Islands Adventures season was the biggest fan service to PokéShipping I've ever seen.

Not only that, we have evidence such as "Misty's Song" and comments she made (the original voice actor) that there's at least romantic feelings coming from Misty's side.

I just believe Ash is a bit too young and more driven by his dreams to think about girls like Brock does. xD

I didn't see most of the Orange Islands arc, but I'll take your word for it. XD

Misty's Song? I don't recall that, but is Misty's song something thrown into the American version or is it present in the Japanese episodes? It doesn't surprise me that Misty has feelings for Ash. She's the stereotypical tsundere type character.

I just believe Ash is a bit too young and more driven by his dreams to think about girls like Brock does. xD

This is all too true. Ash is the typical boy protagonist who doesn't realize until the very last moment of the last episode that he's in love with a girl. I think they just threw Misty's feelings into the show to appeal to those who watch shows for shipping and nothing else which is rather sad since it takes away from the show and doesn't resolve anything. :frown:

It's all about Dawn x Volkner now (see avatar XD )

I'm all for Misty X Ash though. Think I'll draw a pic of that for AX.

@ Pokemon Trainer Char

"Misty's Song" was part of the 2 B A Master soundtrack that came out during the run of the Indigo League season. The before and after the song, it contains clips of the original voice actors as each of their respective characters saying goodnight to each other.

Honestly though, I don't believe your theory about their relationship being thrown into the show just for shippers to be true. I'm actually studying screenwriting, and one of the first things I learned about characters and their relationships to one another is that the central character, in this case Ash, will usually always have a female support, Misty, who will at some point become a love interest, whether it's directly stated or not.

I've seen a few episodes since Misty's left, and I've watched a lot of the movies. From what I've seen, he's acted pretty emo (excuse my modern slang here) over her since she left the gang.

The Japanese are notorious for fan service, and I do believe there's a pretty strong PokeShipping crowd in Japan. It may be right now that they're just not focusing on it because the degree of love we're looking for is just too unfeasible for a child of his age. The first time I actually fell in love and had real romantic feelings, I was 15 years old. That was five years ago, and I haven't felt that since.

@ Nobodys

I absolutely love Dawn, but I thought her love triangle consisted of Barry and Lucas? I would personally love to see her with Barry because Lucas looks like he could be her brother (something I don't want to think about.)

Also, what's AX? I'm curious. :)

That explains why I've never heard of Misty's song. I hate my mother for ripping me from an anime for stupid reasons. *sighs*

I agree with you that the central character will always have a love interest at some point of the show. Most shows like to follow the "save the world + get the girl" plot even if the show is not about saving the world. But shipping in general is thrown into shows all the time (at least in Japanese anime) merely for the sake of bringing in fans. Its just like how now in almost every anime there is the token loli and the token bishoujo guy. They are trends that affect anime overall and have been quickly injected over the past few years.

That's interesting. Even if he is "emo" at least he's showing some maturation in his character.

Pokeshipping or any kind of shipping is big in Japan. They are actually pretty notorious for it. Even though realistically most of us fall in love around the age of 15 or 16 for the first time, in anime the opposite can be true. I've seen the storyline of a girl and boy falling in love at an early age be sterotyped all the time (as far as anime is concerned). I would have to say that a lack of shipping in a pokemon probably has to do more with the demographic who watches the show than the actual state of the characters. Although it would be nice for Ash and Misty to hook up. :thumb:

Exactly!

I also believe that it's mainly the original fans of the show we "kids" between the ages of 18-25 who are really pushing this issue.

4kids added a lot of stuff that wasn't really present in the original version. Including, but not limited to, most of the "proof" PokeShippers cite--especially the songs.

For the record, the term shipping is stupid and I've always hated it. I've also never really understood why people care so much.

At any rate, Kasumi's never coming back as a major cast member and the show obviously isn't written for the adults that watched it when they were younger and remember "the good old days". However, in the event that she does, there won't be any development in the supposed relationship that shippers wished existed.

Yup. Its us who watched the show when we were younger who want to see Ash and Misty together. I'm sure the kids these days would rather see Ash and Dawn since they have no clue who Misty is, but with the coming of HGSS in a few weeks, kids might become fans of her. Anything could happen.

Professor_Chris is spot on about the whole shipping thing and if he is right (I have no way to confirm what you say is true) I really wouldn't be surprised especially since the music for Pokemon here in the U.S. is not the original soundtrack.

I will admit it does make me kind of sad. As for why people care...because its good entertainment. People also get attached to characters and feel a bit of themselves in their. Its only natural. Also people wish to know all about others relationships all the time. Its a topic that almost everyone loves to gossip and talk about regardless of gender in real life so the same can be applied to people who are not real e.g. characters.
