I'm way too much of a cynic. My first thought was, "Great, now it'll happen later, and arguably at higher rates, instead of right now."

Clearly the "powers that be" need to do something highly visible that Joe American will care about so there can be a proper backlash against this kind of thing, instead of just internet-based music fans creating small pockets of protest.

I have a cousin who's been studying music business for the last few years.

We both agree the industry is pretty messed up right now.

The industry could be headed for a big crunch one of these days. It is good to know there are other people here who care. Looks like I may need to start planning on actually being able to cover worlds this year (PM me if you're interested in helping, by the way).
