Pokémon TCG: Sword and Shield—Brilliant Stars

Imagine there was a massive reprint set. What would you put in it?

Let's pretend that TPC decided to release a massive reprint set, like Magic the Gathering huge, cards from across the entire 18 year run of the TCG, and you have, because it's magic and pretend, been given input in what gets in and what doesn't. What do you choose? If it's an evolved Pokemon, are there prevolutions you'd prefer, too?

The reason I ask is because I just participated in my first sanctioned tournament since, was it... Hidden Legends or FireRed LeafGreen? I don't remember, it's been a while, and I was wondering what the, to borrow a phrase, Best of Game cards have been, just from your opinion.

Personally, I would like Platinum Rampardos, as well as Cranidos and the Fossil. That was probably my favorite deck due to the sheer speed and power. And with the new fighting type enhancer cards, that deck would be a beast!

Would it count if I just said "translate the Vending series like WOTC originally planned"?

That would certainly make for a great little draft set.

Desert Ruins, with HP damage adjusted for power creep and affected ex and EX Pokemon.

I've been thinking about this. I certainly wouldn't be opposed to retconing some things, making Fairy Pokemon Fairy Types and Dragon types Dragon. Maybe not energy requirements though, Fairy Energy could make Wigglytuff less useful

start with the staples, potion, switch, rare candy, basic energy, then some of the good draw/search cards, Roseanne's research, professor oak new theory, babe's search, prof juniper, some stadiums, broken time-space etc

then finish it off with some of the iconic pokemon, all the different starters, a bunch of the legendaries mew, mewtwo, darkrai, arceus, etc

im biased, ill probably go with the 2010 format type reprint... love that format :) the supporters especially, I like the search it provides rather than being straight up draws. And not every deck ran a standard Juniper, N, Colress line :) (take note i only played during the 2010 format and 2013 to current format )

another thing Id like for this set would be HGSS art. those cards look absolutely amazing <3

Scramble energy
Double Rainbow Energy

And all of a sudden many stages 1 and stages 2 become playable instead of being in the shoebox.

A few of my friends and I have been contemplating creating a "Core Set" list to use to build decks from and play an unlimited format. A lot of them have been away from the game for a while now and we figured learning a certain group of cards would be easier and cheaper in the long run for some casual play. I don't care what they put in as long as whatever they put in this reprint set is designed with draft in mind.

The reprint set would be released once a year, and would contain 15 cards per booster pack, well because MTG's boosters are draft ready, and contains 15 cards, while yugioh's draft centric battle packs contain only 5 cards, but you are supposed to open up 3 packs at a time for a total of 15 cards.

Personally, I'd like a large reprint set like this to primarily balance old, Unlimited Format cards. Cards like Item Finder and Professor Oak need nerfs.

However, I really don't feel a reprint set works well for Pokemon. Bringing back cards from the past to the current format has way too much potential to be unbalanced. Both because many cards from the past, like Broken Time-Space or Professor Oak or Uxie LA, are extremely powerful, and many cards (especially EX era and earlier) are much weaker than the current standard, thus making it kind of pointless to reintroduce them also. For instance, Base Set Hitmonchan, one of the best cards of its era, is absolutely terrible by today's standards, comparable to many evolving basics.

With all this in mind, I can think of very few cards from the past I want back unchanged. Energy Exchanger and Vs. Seeker probably. And actually, I want Power Tree, Meteor Falls and Full Flame also.

As for cards I want back with changes... Aside from nerfs like Professor Oak, Lass, Super Energy Removal and Item Finder... I REALLY want a buffed Championship Arena, probably reducing hand size to 4 or 5 cards. I honestly can't think of anything else. A lot of the older cards I like I feel should never come back. Brock's Ninetales, for instance, is an amazingly fun and unique card, but it's not one I can ever see safely coming back, and is probably too complicated regardless.

Hey if we get the vending set, I want the VS set also!

As for actual reprints, I wouldn't mind the banned Neo Genesis Slowking card. Seems like such a fun ability!

@Widdi: That's a reprint set intended for an unsupported Unlimited format? Why bother?

If that's meant to be Modified then you're insane.

Unlimited formats are very fun, that's why I bother. Especially when you don't do structured unlimited. Cube Draft and Unlimited Sealed (the reason we are building a set) are some of the best times I've ever had playing the game.

I see no point in playing competitively (I'm an adult with no need for a scholarship prize), so I am always looking for ways to have fun with the game, because I still greatly enjoy it. I play standard occasionally, but it isn't worth the investment when I can pick up older cards for far less money and still have tons of cards from the old formats to give out to friends who enjoy the game, but would never play competitive.

in regards to Base Set Hitmonchan being terrible by today's standards, this is a reason why I wouldn't be terribly upset with cards being errata'd to bring the oldest cards up to speed. After all, this isn't especially uncommon. It happens to Trainer cards all the time.

Alternatively, reprint these best of early game cards as common cards. Hitmonchan might not be the best card anymore, but if you were playing a draft tournament, you'd probably be estatic to get him.
