Incredible Pokemon-TCG growth

It's interesting how the Pokemon trend sorta went underground for a while. People still played the games, as they were massive successes, but it seems that after the cards were banned from many schools that people stopped talking about it. Some may have seen it as childish or whatever silly reason to not talk about it.

However, I noticed that ever since Diamond and Pearl came out, more people have been open about Pokemon, whether it be the cards or the games, or art.

Bottom line, look at US Nats. A 30% or so growth every year for 3 years running!

Keith

2004: 130/37/69 = 236
2005: 396
2006: 536
2007: 735
2008: 947

04-05: 68% increase
05-06: 35% increase
06-07: 37% increase
07-08: 29% increase

For whatever reason, I'm kinda expecting 09 to be somewhere in the 1200-1400 range, mostly b/c it's now truly a FREE event!

This post brings up several thoughts. First off, numbers are only one aspect of the health of the game. We have a lot of fun with our friendly NW rivalry, but I think a better measure of a healthy OP environment is growth and the experience players have at events.

However, when we do look at attendance, why would we only look at players from the state where the event is held? Travellers are a huge part of this game. But hey, I'll play along. Let's use your own numbers. We'll reduce the OR total of 199 by 40 WA players and the WA total of 139 by 15 OR players. That leaves WA at 124 and OR at 159. Hmmm.

The other thing I need to mention is you are only looking at players with My Pokemon accounts when you are pulling the numbers from the Ratings and Rankings page. There are a whole lot more players participating, It's just hard to get an accurate count.

Bottom line - I whole heartedly agree that the game is continuing to experience fantastic growth, especially this year. I can't wait for States and Regionals. Maybe we can get a larger number of OR players up to WA States this year and finally bring back a few of your trophys to Oregon!!!

Hey Bring it on!!. No seriously I fully expect this year to be different from past seasons, I was extreamly impressed with the sheer number of quality decks that I observed in the one CC that we particpated in on New Years Day in Beaverton. Each year it seemed that that Going into States and Regionals the Washington players has a slight skill level advantage over our Oregon counterparts. But from what I observed this year that has completely evaporated. I would not at all be surprised if this year Oregon takes more titles in the 9 championships open in Washington/ Oregon States and NW Regionals. I saw amazing decks in al age groups fro moregon players, and the skil level amongst the players there was very high as well. Maybe if Ross was going to be here and not playing in Minnesota States, I would still give Washington the advantage, but to be honest this year Washignton players will all have to bring our "A" game if we wish to hold our own against Oregon this year. The tournements should be fantastic. Good Luck to all!!

There were some local tournaments, but otherwise, I don't think Alaska is even part of the Pokemon League. Heck, if I knew if we had tournaments, I would go all the time, but I've never found one yet this year.

We usually go up and down, though the playerbase in NY for tournaments at the moment is about 40 (not counting NJ). The rest are casual players. We used to have hundreds, but people moved to other states, or moved on as time went by.
