Pokémon TCG: Sword and Shield—Brilliant Stars

Jon's MA states with SPlox (top 4)

So I'm in a similar situation as last weekend, since I know I won't be attending worlds OR nats this year, and last year may have been my last nats for a long time. This ultimately ends up being why I scoop in top four, cuz im not a fan of wasting $300.

I stay at Con's the night before and we test my gardy deck vs his luxchomp. If i miss a turn 2 gallade/gardy, i usually would lose this one. We stopped after 1-1 though. I liked my deck, and since I'm not really going for the win, I decided to challenge myself and play it. I had outs vs almost every deck. I ran a bat, a luxray line, a lucario gl, and some turns.

The morning of, we get there within 10 minutes of opening time and next thing I know we're all scrambling around writing decklists or EVEN MAKING DECKS....alex.... for 50 minutes straight. My hand got tired. We all hang out and round 1 goes up fairly quickly.

Round 1 vs Patty L. (Garchomp Sv)

So i know how to play this matchup, and i do a good job of getting gardy out with 5 energies on it. I jump into the lock with a wager that I think I won, and i take her first chomp. After one more, she maintinences and gets the third and fourth. Since I had also gusted a dol with luxray, I needed just two more prizes to win and there was no way to take the chomps, so I got them off her fresh dol and benched tomb. GG patty.

1-0

Round 2 vs Nick C. (Gengar sf/tomb/lotsastuff)

I see his insanely teched deck unfold quickly, and my start is kinda junk, but i tomb a setup somewhat well. He gets out a pair of sf gengars and I'm wondering what the heck is going on. I am quickly forced to fight with luxray and make a good play of using it to bash his fainting spell later on when he sniped it to leave it at 120 when it was belted. He nailed the heads, and if he didnt he would have been 10 short at the end of the game b/c of turns. SPEAKING OF TURNS, i didn't see one all game. At the end, i needed to pick up a bat with 50 on it to prevent him from ending them game with triple bat/ ko on active, but he rips the last turn to KO them. GG.

As a side note, he didn't learn that i ran 3 wager until after my top match because i didnt see one of those all game either.

1-1, Record as the earliest round I've lost all year now.

Round 3 vs James L. (FLyTrAp)

He gets turn 1 flygon and dol via bts...... and i set up slowly...... but he tries to trap a baltoy with fly x and memberry but i evolve, retreat with dce and lock his small hand. I come back slowly, and eventually i win because he belted instead of trying to memlock me when we were tied in prizes.

2-1

Round 4 Vs Randy (Random poke lines)

While I didn't understand his deck, he set up with what he had well, using igglybuff and no supporters to draw 3 twice, then dropping his mom's kindness cards as we fought. I saw no wager until too late, but i had a solid setup and a turn 3 gardy swinging. Luxray helped me make sure i didnt get any nasty surprises and i end up winning 6-0

3-1

Round 5 vs Gary L. (Quagsire/shuppet/walltechs)
I remember now. He sets up, so do i, and i triple wager him to death with a plox the whole game. The third wager made him unable to put a shuppet back down, and i win with 3 prizes on his board.
4-1

Round 6 vs Dave C. (Flygon/Queen/Noir)

I get my only turn 2 PLOX of the day. Too bad he had a devoluter in his opening hand. Good thing i had a kirlia as well. Too bad even though i had a belt, telekinesis doesnt hit weakness on uxie. Good thing he didnt have much going. He finally gets a fighting flygon and gets my gardy to critical damage, and i nail 80 before getting ko'd. I realize that the trash in my hand is enough to make uxie ko the flygon with bat/turn. I do that, and he sends up a queen, does DCE, and passes. I draw dol, draw 2, evolve my charged kirlia in to gardy, retreat bat, and search for luca to OHKO my last prize.

5-1

Round 7 Vs Dude with leather jacket (Gengar sf =/)

Alex was MAD about losing to this guy, but hes not that bad. He just had a really low rating and did really well with a deck his friends got online. I was paired up to him, and he was the last undefeated. I was most likely gonna lose if he set up well enough. I open Ralt, belt, rosy, turn, junk. He starts q, attaches and does 30. You know the rest

6-1.

I'm seeded third, and i can't beleive i actually pulled that record with what seemed like a sketchy play. Con, Dylan and I find we're all paired against shuppets. Con had to fight the toughest one, and I got the 2nd toughest i think.

Top 16 vs Stephen J. (Tissue)

Game 1: I open my only tomb this game so i was psyched, but he opened rosy and played through it quickly. He blowers a gardy but doesnt ohko. I charge the benched ralts, dol my candy/ gardy needs, and win a wager, and my gardy lives another turn. He eventually gets a partial shuppet back, but i wager again and lose but he comes 10 short of the win and i take it. Couldn't beleive I won.

Game 2 : We open jank, and neither of us does much unti i get double dols rolling and he nails the rosy. I play out the same plan as last time, but it comes down to him sending up an uxie he thought was q'd. He misses a scoop up with all his pluspowers down and scoops as he just dropped his chance at winning entirely. GG

7-1
I almost did a backflip after winning this. Couldn't beleive it. Con also won with Azul missing 5/5 game winning flips in game 3 on time. Dylan lost but actually took a game vs shuppet with dos.

Top 8 vs Vikas (Dos)

Game 1: I set up, he rushes a dos, but i have the quick gardy x thanks to my single tomb start again. As i ko him i wager, but i find out he runs suicune so i have to deal with another. At one point I Gust his regice and put tomb back up and resetup. At the end of this game, with his regice at 60, and my gardy about to die from poison going into my turn, he gets a dos down that i would have needed an NM to ko, but he leaves sabeleye up as i have 2 prizes and he'll only need one more. I triple bat his ice and KO the sabeleye with gardy, never having to ko the dos.

Game 2: I get moving very quickly again with the only tomb in my deck that i keep managing to start with:smile: and I use what i learned from game one to play the matchup right. I hold my nm and use gardy x to prevent his ohko and wager after each ko. He didnt nail any recovery cards except suicune so he didnt do much for a bit, but then his rosyrade gl comes back again and gets my gardy close to ko again. i plox, and poison leaves me at 10 after my turn. He leaves rosy up, and i double bat and ko then next sacrifice he puts up leaving me at one prize, and THEN he nails the dos. He sees my charged luxray on the bench, guesses i have a turn in hand, and saw me search out lucario gl earlier so i show him and he scoops. GG's dude.

8-1
Top 4 vs Alex (Gengar switch/techs)

I sign the slip and we chill till he plays Con in the finals. I get third and Con wins it all again.

8-2.

Had fun, and also had no idea I'd do so well with a plox deck, even if it had that spin on it.

Props:
SPlox
Con
Frezzas

Hey Jon, this is the fat kid who borrowed the Toxi G Promo at LondonDerry. May I ask who TT is? lol thanx. Btw why can't you go to Nats/Worlds?

Thanks! TT is Thomas A.

I can't go to worlds this year because of a combination of money and the training days for my LIT job at camp start over nationals. I tried to get the days off for worlds with no response from the director =/

nice write up jon. nice show of sportsmanship knowing you cannot make it to Nats/Worlds.

You are a World Class player.

Hey this is the "dude with the leather jacket" lol...

anyway good write up, nice talking to you as well. I wish we could have played a real game, but that's the luck factor involved in the game.

For the record I didn't get my deck online, I just told Alex that to get into his head. That's the poker player in me, don't want to give away my edge as an unknown player so easily.

I had a great time in my first tournament, and was pretty shocked how well I did against a lot of great players.

Here's the list I was running.... FYI I swapped in the 2 warp energy for 2 more call the night before and I think that cost me a chance to win the tournament. Against you and the kid I played in Top 16, having a call in my hand would have saved me.

Most amusing part of the day for me was the tournament staff CLEARLY trying to find anyway possible to DQ me, because they didn't think an unknown player could do so well.

Jon - Nice report and good for you for scooping to Alex, god knows he needs all the help he can get ;-)

Congrats Jon! Pretty confused as to why you scooped t4. How would that save you 300 bucks?

Good job anyway, congrats on making your own deck.

glad I could finally play you. Can't believe you only played one tomb and started with it both times haha

-Vikas

Steve - Thanks! If only I could bring my world-classness to worlds someday =/. There's actually still some hope.

Quiznat - NICE. And dang, you musta had it planned out. You told Alex you got it from a friend, and your friend walked by and said he got it online? That's what I heard from Alex. Well played. And yeah, you can't mess with calls in a deck.

Hanaan - Good one. Can't wait to school your gengar deck at regs. Wear the cities medal. ;-)

Danny - Not saving myself 300, just not wasting it. Everyone else in top 4 was definitely going to Nats this year and I'm definitely not. If I won, one of them I coulda passed the win to would have been 300 dollars poorer if I had decided to be a jerk about it. In all honesty, I don't think I could have beaten con without turn 2 plox/gallades anyways, but Alex really deserved the shot as well.

Vikas - 3/4 games I played in 16 and 8! It might have mattered less against your dos, but none of the starts except my game 2 in top 16 were bad at all. And that was the tombless one lol. I had been hearing about you winning stuff in NY but never seen you. Interesting to play you and GL at regs , if you're gonna be there. I'll be playing the first day of it.

That is a very serious accusation. If you would please PM the details.

What happened was I was sitting at the top table waiting for my match with Alex. Btw, I knew who he was we had looked up who the top people in Mass were etc. He comes up and.....

Scene

Alex : Hey man you look kinda bored, you're at the top table you should be happy.
Me : Oh yeah I'm totally thrilled.
Alex : So this is your first tourney?
Me: Yeah.
Alex : You're 5-0 in your first tourney? No way.
Me : Yeah man, my friend just gave me a deck he found online.
Alex : ::rolls eyes:: Wow.

I was just kinda playing up the image that I was a total noob who was getting super lucky you know? The reality is I play alot with my group of friends. One of them was a top Magic player back in the day, so we had some decent competition going. He also was a gyrados player so I knew how to beat that deck. This gave me a good shot against the meta, and 2 wins in swiss I would have lost if I wasn't aware of how to counter the DOS, including one win against Dylan.

Anyway, I've been a pro/semi-pro gamer in Quake, Warcraft 3 and others, and have a huge poker background, so a card game involving strategy is kinda up my ally you might say.

See you at Regionals.

Bret - Thanks! Just made sense at the time, I wouldn't have dropped for someone I knew wouldn't use it well.

Jay - Of course I remember you man.... and I doubt I'll forget.

Steve - I never got a reply from my camp director when I asked for the days off, and my mom told me if I really wanted to, and my director allowed it, she'd help me get there. So it's all on an email now.

Quiznat - Ah, kinda funny to be honest. You should keep it going though, we need more people like you to play. Makes our area as a whole seem less noobish.

Hanaan - Funny man...... likes to play dumb. BTW tell aylam I liked his dos deck

Don't forget it's the so-called "noobs" and pokeparents who add to the body count that helped get enough players for the awesome Top 16 cut this year. See, we are good for something, showing up and taking our beatings!

Thanks you two! And Mary, you "noobs" still make me take every game I play seriously. I almost lost in top 16 to someone who hasn't made a top cut all year. I was scared. I don't underestimate, and things like your dusknoir tech(Battleroads a year ago i think) made me sure of that.
