LtG's Adventure in Tennessee

Hey all, LtG here and this is my report from the 2012 Tennessee State Championship. I decided to make the trip to Tenn as I didn't want to go to Georgia and take part in the Florida warm-up. So I fly into Atlanta Friday morning get a rental car and drive 4 hours to Nashville. I do a little solo testing the night before and don't really change much of my deck, Zekrom Eels, as I have tested for about 2 months and feel confident in my list and my understanding of the metagame.

So Saturday comes and I register and am ready to go, I feel confident as I check the roster and there are 108 Masters, so we have 7 rounds, Top 16.

Round 1 vs Zekrom/Eels
So I sit down and I have to play a girl...side note, idk why but I have like a 6 game losing streak to girls, but today I don't care and am ready to play. I start Zekrom EX to her Tynamo, she goes 1st and Collectors to setup. I go, play down a DCE to my active and set up as well. She then proceeds to Lost Remover my DCE, and that definitely hurt. She eventually gets a Zekrom swinging for 120, and I am slowly setting up my Eels, but I keep whiffing on SSUs to free up the active spot (eventually go 0-5 on SSU flips) She gets the KO and take the 1st few prizes with Zekrom, but during this time she has a very tasty looking Zekrom EX with a DCE and 3 Lighting on it, and I and I have Terrakion and Fighting in hand, just need the catcher. So I promote Smeargle, and play down Terrakion, Fighting and Dynamotor and she gets nervous. Only problem was all my catchers were prizes -_____- I KO the Zekrom and she rolls me from there. Rough start to the day.
0-1

Round 2 vs Reshi EX/Emboar
So I go 2nd again and start lone Tynamo to his Reshi EX and I am relieved, no T1 and a favorable matchup. He gets a T2 Emboar and his Victini up. I have a terrible slow start, but he isn't able to take advantage. I get Smeargle active with my Skyarrow up and start the Portrait shenanigans. Key moment with me down 1 prize and I needed and energy to KO his ReshiEX which he just whiffed the flip to avoid the damage. So I Portrait and can play either Juniper or Cilan, I didn't even know what Cilan did, so I read it and I exclaim that its the best card in the format and grab my 3 Lighting. Junk Arm 2 away and attach the other and get the KO with ZekromEX. I precede to Catcher everything and eventually he can't get a Pignite with 50 on it out of the active and concedes. I had a terrible start, but I just outplayed him and came out on top.
1-1

Round 3 vs Reshiphlo
So I sit down and this kid is wearing all this Worlds swag and I really don't care, I finally go 1st and he start lone Quil to my Tynamo/Zekrom combo. We both setup good, and he eventually catchers an Eel and get the KO. I get the return no problem and he draws, plays down a card, and says "Junk Arm". Only problem was that he played a Juniper and says that he meant to play Junk Arm and it was up to me to let him take it back which I say I'm sorry and he has to Juniper away and 8 card hand filled with energy, catcher, junk arm and such, he was so mad at me he didn't say another word the rest of the match. The rest of the game he tries to Cleffa stall but I just keep playing catcher and take a prize a turn and win fairly quickly. You all may think I'm a jerk and may stop reading, but we are all old enough to know the difference between a Juniper and Junk Arm, especially someone who has done well at Worlds.
2-1

Round 4 vs Zekrom/Eels
So I start Smeargle to his lone Tynamo, and I don't get a donk, so we continue to setup. I start the prize trade taking something with a Terrakion, he KO's it with the PP Zekrom. I KO his Zekrom with my Mewtwo, He plays down DCE Mewtwo Dynamotor to KO my Mewtwo. I KO a hurt Zekrom EX for 2 with my Zekrom EX as my other Mewtwo was prized and. So he SSU's the Mewtwo and but plays it back down and eventually get the KO on my Zekrom EX with Mewtwo and now he needs 1 prize to my 2. I have Super Rod, DCE, and 2 Dual Ball in hand, so I promote Smeargle and play Super Rod to put back Mewtwo and flip 4 tails on Dual Ball. I know that If I Portrait and its a Juniper I lose, but I need to do it. So I Portrait for a Sage and I rip the Mewtwo, play the DCE Dynamotor and win a very crazy game.
3-1

Round 5 vs Terrakion/Landorus
So he mulligans a bunch and based on what I saw I thought it was some Electrode thing, but it was legit 4 Landorus/3 Terrakion. I start Zekrom EX and I seriously just dead draw all game, and when I try to Portrait out of it he played so little support that it was pointless. Hard Counter sucks to play against.
3-2

Round 6 vs CMT
So we both start Mewtwo and I go 1st, so I make sure not to play the 1st energy, I honestly don't remember much about the game, except that it was just revenge KO's on the EX and I finished by hitting her Mewtwo for 280 and game.
4-2

Round 7 vs Terrakion/Landorus
A win and I have a very good shot at making Top Cut. We flip and he start lone Landorus to my Zekrom EX -______- I try to go aggro Mewtwo but he Lost Remover's 2 of my DCE's and it sucked watching my tourney go down the drain and there was nothing I could do about it.
4-3

4-3 33rd out of 108...I even missed the kicker =(

So I traveled all the way to Tennessee, tested for countless hours, and went 4-3 missed the kicker and I ran into the only 2 Landorus/Terrakion players there to get knocked out of contention. It was one of the worst feeling I had during that last game just watching everything I do get countered and knowing that I wasn't going to Top Cut.

So after I regained my composure I drive down to Georgia and crashed with some Florida people for the night and I basically get over what happen and its all good. Looking forward to partying at FL States.

Props:
Trip was loads of fun
Won a Binder alol
Everyone in Tennessee was awesome
I proved to myself that I actually am decent, as I can just outplay people and win

Slops:
Terrakion/Landours Shenanigans
Reshiphlo kid I beat in Round 3 made top 4
4 hour drive, by myself, at night, changing time zones and havng daylight savings happen -____-

Onward to Florida States...

Concerning Round 3:

I know several very well respected Judges, and I think he would have had a great argument for getting to "take it back." I have been told repeatedly by some of those judges that if you put one card onto the field while simultaneously declaring (saying) to use another card, they would almost all let that player "take back" the first card and play the one they declared.

I think you got lucky he/she did not appeal that one to a judge. I think you would have lost that argument (at least from what I've been told).

Anyway, bummer about missing the cut.

I disagree with the above.

Mindless thinking is not LtG's fault. That is human error. AKA the opponent's fault.

Jon, maybe cutting the Zek EX would be nice...you always start with it XD

I'm not saying that I 100% agree with it. I was merely providing some more information.

There are annual Nationals and Worlds judges in my area that have mentioned such things. Some of them would gladly say that the person can pick it up because it was a, for lack of a better word, "mechanical" mistake. They meant to grad the third card from the right, but grabbed the fourth. Their intent is obvious from them declaring what they are doing.

I was more just wanting to point out that judges will go both ways on this one because it seems to be a grey area. And I wanted to point this out so that when people are the one who "messed up" they don't just take their opponent's word on it. They should call a judge over and see if the judge will let them "take it back." It's not like they mentally chose the wrong strategy and messed up in that regard, in the listed circumstance, they obviously just pulled the wrong card out.

I was the head judge at the event and I would have certainly let it be taken back. We are always trying to be aware of "intent" in these situations. Either way, I'm glad you traveled such a long way to our event. It was great to see so many new faces
