Magmortar's art change?

Anyone know why it was changed? A lot I've heard is cause he was pointing a gun at u but he is doing the same thing in the COL and SV arts

Just wanna know your alls opinions

I guess the blackness of the barrel hole makes it look more like a gun barrel?
Just a wild guess.

Anybody have side-by-side image comparisons?? Loved doing this with the old, old fossil grimer.

I'd imagine they're just trying to cover all of their bases. Somewhere in this wonderful land of lawsuits, someone might be offended by this particularly aggressive looking Magmortar and try to take it up with TPCi.

It wasn't the Fossil Grimer that was problematic. It was the Team Rocket Grimer that was looking up a girl's skirt, hence why the direction of its eyeballs was changed on the English art.

I'm still surprised that the censors didn't catch the yungdrung on Koga's Ninja Trick. I remember being 11 when the card first came out, and it was one of the first things I noticed.

They did notice and correct that for the English release. Even in Japan they had to go back and edit the original symbol on later prints due to the complaints of it being too similar to a swastika.

Meh, this artist isn't very good anyways...
I thought my grasp of color theory was bad...and this guy gets paid?!

I think the difference between the SV and COL Magmortar cards and the censored one is that there's obviously fire in Magmortar's hand in the first two, while the censored Magmortar just has smoke coming out of its hand and maybe they were afraid that it would be suggestive of a hand gun or something that kids could actually find and use themselves.

Well, just look at them. The SV and COL cards were much more colorful, were in sideslanted posses and looked generally happy. The original art for this Magmortar is a dark color scheme, Magmortar is standing absolutely towards the player with a manical smile and a smoking mortar hand. He looks like he just shot whoevers looking at him!

I don't think it needed to be changed, and i certainly wish they wouldve improved it from what they gave us, but i understand why they changed it atleast. A lot of casual collecters just like the cards for their art, or for the Pokemon represented, and it may disturb the parents of a young child they are buying a pack for if the "rare" of the set implies any kind of violence directly at their child.

Heck, i'm more annoyed that they release half evolutions of cards like a loose Foongus. Give us some paltry junky Amoongus to limit the number of trigger happy Magmortars around!

Aside from maybe some over saturation on the English one, I don't see any issues. Let artists be artists; they don't have to follow every guideline there is. Do all music composers use all aspects of music theory? No. Why should all artists?

Technical skill and understand of art principles is still very important. A lot of people work very hard on their knowledge and skills just like any profession. It is understandable for someone in commercial art to be upset when they see people make money with less work put into it.

It's kind of a conflict in the artworld. Have opinions, will clash.

It's probably a good thing it was changed cause in the Japanese one it does look like he's aiming a gun and what looks like the background is a theater and given recent events the Japanese one does kinda resemble the Colorado shooter obviously the cards were printed way before that happened but had it not been changed I could see it being sensitive to the victims' familes had they seen it

No bad intent or anything im not making a joke or anything about the tragedy just an observation

why is there a double standard in this world? sensitivity everywhere...but when it comes to war movies and stuff, where is the sensitivity to soldiers?

the artwork shouldve stayed.
