Medals at Nationals?

I really don't think I would be complaining that I got a Metal instead of a Trophy if I won Nats... I mean I would have just won Nats. Seriously there are bigger things to complain about, if you can find something small to complain about after top 4 cutting at Nats you have problems. I do have to admit though Metal<Trophies.

This is not the Olympics, the medals are not precious metals, there is not a hundred plus years of history associated with these medals; what there is, is years of association with trophies. Sarcasm does nothing but aggravate people, please check it at the door.

Well, I'm aggravated by the "this is different, therefore I hate it" attitude that infests this game's community. It's like we're all fat Republicans threatened by change, or however that Family Guy bit went.

Could we all maybe be like Vince and at least actually see the medals before declaring they suck?

It isn't the actual medals themselves that suck. I'm sure they'll look pretty cool. It is the fact that trophy -> medal is a downgrade to almost everyone. The Olympics argument is absolutely ridiculous. Pokemon is not the Olympics, it does not hold the same prestige, our medals will not be made out of precious metals and they should not be compared.

They don't photograph well? What a joke, any decent backdrop, a decent photographer and they'll look good. The cost argument seemed valid for States, maybe even Regionals but not for Nationals. These trophies are not mass. produced and they're shipped to very few places. If this is actually a cost concern even within the budget that was mentioned in the other thread that's worrying.

I'll also say that I don't think a little kid running around tournaments with their giant medal bragging to the other little kids that don't have one is good sportsmanship. If anyone above the age of twelve wears one of the medals it's just sad. Be proud of your accomplishment, maybe even brag a little but don't rub it in everybody's faces. That is what these medals will encourage for the less mature players, I guarantee it.

Now for an idea. I think if they're trying to cut costs than more trophy cards are the way to go. Legitimately playable ones. This costs virtually nothing to the company while providing a real prize. They also have secondary market value if the winner wishes to sell them. The card(s) can later be reprinted for more availability but in a different rarity, etc. These would probably just be for Nationals in addition to Worlds, maybe Regionals. I'm sure this will be shot down immediately with some argument about "but the kids!" but hey.

You're just a medal hater. Rappers wear bling, so why shouldn't we? Besides, they're SO SHINYYYYYYYYY.

Does anyone here have little children that play sports? I know you (collective you - Vince, 'Mom, Keith) have been around for a long time, I respect that, I respect that your kids are accomplished. But, kids get medals for showing up at events now. Medals are for PARTICIPATION not for winning, that is what trophies are for. Blame society for that, someone decided not getting a medal for showing up is bad for a kid's character. My son was sick for a soccer tournament once, you know what they did, they gave him his medal anyway, why? Did he win? No, his team didn't and he didn't even show up! And you expect him to think a medal has the same prestige as a trophy?
I have a 2nd place STS medal, they're definitely not for participation where I come from.
Your son wasn't part of that team for a day, he was part of that team for at least a season. They may have succeeded on that particular day during your son's unfortunate absence, but its important he understands that he helped that team grow. He learned with them, they learned with him, and the whole was greater than the sum of its parts. Not giving your son that medal would've demonstrated to him that he should've shown up sick and risked the group's chances to risk getting his trophy.

You might want to let the International Olympic Committee know about this rule, I don't think they've heard.
Cheap shot, you're capable of making a substantive statement so you should.

I think Vince (and some others) have the right idea that we should look at the particular expression (the actual medals) before we pass too stern a judgment. The people working for P!P have some concept of what is cool and lame even if it doesn't perfectly match your own, they're going to try and give out something worth us getting excited about.

With all the money they're saving on the trophies they can afford to make up new States to have a state champs in. I'm shooting for New Pennsylzona State Champ.

*nods to keith*

i don't think people understand the process...and cost...of making a custom trophy for a high-profile event like a national or world championship.

this is not going to be nearly as simple as going down to the local trophy/engraving shop, picking out a generic 'cup' in three different sizes and getting an engraved self-adhesive plaque made and slapped on, like for the local bowling or soccer league.

we haven't even SEEN the medals yet, and people are complaining? i can think of a lot of ways to make a medal just as impressive as a trophy: presentation case, display stand, etc.

'mom

I would honestly rather have a generic cup trophy than a medal.

Medals are cool. I'm sure most National winners this year will love showing up to Worlds wearing one to be easily spotted in the main event. Why not try something different.

Extremely disappointed at this. Medals are cheesy looking, get lost easily, etc. I say if the juniors and seniors want medals that's fantastic but masters DESERVE trophies at the very least because odds are, we won't be wearing the medals around our necks. Hoe am I supposed to support a company that keeps cutting scholarships, prizes, trips, etc. all at the same time while making less than ideal sets? I probably won't? If a set has great cards, tourneys are worth it, etc. I will put in the time and effort but this is kinda getting ridiculous. Enough about my rant but I can only shake my head at this one.

BTW, where are the medals for the top 4 of SPTs, it's under my impression that they didn't receive them at ANY state/province championships. If the shipping is supposed to be easier and cheaper, why weren't they at the events? Just saying'...

Wow, ok, kick me while I am down. I guess there is no forgiveness at all. It isn't like I haven't seen worse at any event attended or at worlds itself.

Can you really tell me that this is a positive direction for the game, the game that we all PAY for to play? Sure, we may not pay to play CCs, SPTs, Etc. But I pay for food, gas, hotels, cards, etc. This game is not free.

Trophies signify a huge achievement, medals signify a smaller achievement. Idk about anyone else but I have lost over half my CC medal but keep my trophies safe and look up to them remembering my wins.

I seriously can't believe this.

Well, i was pretty apologetic about states and reg's medals, because of the cost and everything, but really, at nats? They only have to make 12, and thats not very much compared to the amount they make in publicity and selling things, afaik.

So, you would rather have your trophy than have more events to grow the game? Is that what you're saying? Because that's why they cut the trophies, dude. To fund more events for that very reason.

It's not all about medals or achievements. It's about the game. That must be a shock for you, though.

The glass trophies are cool but silly really... They are big and all look the same.
If someone were to get a trophy every year they would run out of room pretty fast but medals are nice and easy and like people said kids like to have them.

Also you have to keep in mind when it comes to Trophies/ medals Pokemon isn't producing them... so they are paying more then cost. It is probably really expensive.

What is more surprising to me is the DSi over the 3ds as Nintendo produces them and they cost nintendo whatever the cost of production is. Sure they save some money but give an outdated prize. It would be like giving out MD when it is about to be rotated out.

Seriously hoping that is a typo.

Also I am very interested to see what happens with the professor cup this year prize wise.

only 12 for the US. pretty sure other nats need them too. @gallade

not happy with the switch to medals, but if it helps them save money I guess it's cool.

Nintendo games and OP are 2 seperate divisions. Please dont assume the DS's are "given" to OP to hand out as prizes. They are not free.

Keith

I didn't say free anywhere in that post... but it is very reasonable to assume they don't pay full cost.

Just saying... me and my brother are both "kids" and we like trophies better /:
