Melee in Detroit...

What are your thoughts on the melee that occured at Detroit last night? For more information, check out ESPN.com 's NBA section.

I saw this live... and I don't know, I thought it was disgraceful... BUT... I don't blame the Pacers' players. I really think that the fans were the ones that instigated it, and although players should NEVER go into the stands, under the circumstances I don't think they were completely in the wrong.

Artest is going to take the fall for this, and he's probably the LEAST guilty of everyone. I think we might end up seeing the Pacers' third string start the next few games after this is sorted out! Fantasy is going to be fun for the next couple weeks...

As a Detroiter myself, I am ashamed and insulted at the behavior of the "fans"

While I belive that Artest's foul was flagrant, and that Wallace's reaction was rediculus. I don't blame the Pacers, or the Pistons at all. It was obvious that the Pacers involved in the fight were doing it in self-defence. Jackson and Artest did exactly what any of us would do if we got a drink flung in our face.

If you were there ((My mom and brother were 3 rows behind the fight)) or watch the numorous tapes that the sports stations are showing you will see Jackon get in a really good punch to one of the unrully fans that threw a drink at him. I think that will cost him, so many people won't see what he did as self-defence, and that really stinks. Wallace will get probably a ban of 3 days, and Artest will get somthing like 4 days.

I sincerly hope that Jackson managed to get in a few good hits before they pulled him off of that "fan".

And that's my two cents.

well, when you cram a rowdy crowd into an arena and throw in some alcohol and flaring tempers, you will almost always get a similar result. i want to know what security was doing while this was going on. i thought we were the "terror alert" nation, so why wasn't security present until the fight had escalated into a brawl? i can see why the fight erupted, but that doesn't excuse any of the people involved. they should ban the fans involved from ever entering the arena again, and they should fine and suspend the players involved. you can't run into a crowd and start wailing on somebody just because you get a drink thrown at you. professional athletes are constantly in the spotlight, so they should be aware that their actions send a message to everyone watching. until our athletes learn to grow up and our fans learn to calm down (they might have to ban alcohol or something), these kinds of thing might not be as rare as they should. it's not the first time something like this has happened, and it probably won't be the last.

lol, I have Artest and O'Neal on my Fantasy team...

Does any site have a video of the whole incident? But after what I read on Yahoo Sports, professional athletes just need to suck it up if they have problems with fans at a game. Didn't a Texas Ranger through a chair into the stands this season in Oakland? They just need to ignore those fans and not retaliate.

Kinda difficult when people are throwing things in your face and constantly jabbin at you for an hour or more straight. Basically, try listening to an army drill seargent for an hour while being pelted with M&Ms and Snickers bars, and we'll see how long you can do nothing about it. I'd give myself about 10 minutes before I punch somebody.

man, when i read the tournament i thought there would be a melee tourney in detroit :p
anyway, i think this is mainly due to people getting drunk in the crowds, imo they need to do something to put up a boundary from the crowd, or move em farther back somehow...

Realistically, basketball is the only sport where fans are THAT CLOSE. It's going to cost the NBA some money, but maybe they need to get rid of courtside seats after this incident... I don't know. Like it or not, though... this isn't a bad thing for the NBA. I heard a lot of people on ESPN saying this was a "dark day for the NBA"... when in actuality it's just going to attract more people to watching it. As long as this doesn't become a mainstay like it is in hockey... we should be alright.

This incedient should be a case for the revival of the 18th amendment!

But seriously, bullados, I'd give myself like...3 mins. I think that the people that were doing thesse things to the pacers were actually disgruntled hockey fans that couldn't get their daily doseage of violence from hockey.

I have a full tape of the brawl, and the expression on the face of the dude who ticked off Artest is hilarious!

If anyone is wondering, you can find the video of the brawl, go here. I think Wallace overreacted and started the whole thing. There wasn't even that much time left in the game! Even though they were getting pelted with stuff, they should of just tried to get on with the game and finish it. And where was the security???

***UPDATE***

The suspensions were announced! http://www.nba.com/news/pacers_pistons_041121.html

Artest is done for the season, O’Neal is gone for 25 games, Jackson is gone for 30, Wallace for 6, and there are more various suspensions for the others.

lol, this killed my fantasy team.

I really don't blame the players for what happened, but Random's right, players should never approach the fans during the game. Some of the stuff I saw after the brawl was over was appalling. The endless snacks being thrown, a chair tossed at O'Neal. I think banning alcohol in a game where the players are so close is in order.

I actually thought the event was funny.

But that's probably just my violent self...

One player got suspended for the whole season! He must be
kicking himself; losing all that money!

it's Ron Artest, the guy who has more flagrant fouls in 3 seasons with the Pacers than Dennis Rodman had in his entire career. He had it comin, IMO.
