My ECSC Tournament Report

Alright, I am a little bit late but I figure that I would write up my ECSC Tournament Report anyways. Alright, this one was a bit of a surprise to go to. After effectively quitting the game a bit before Origins and than coming to play in Nationals with no prior knowledge to any of the cards in Hidden Legends and only managing a 4-3 record with Flygon, I decided to actually put alot of effort in on this last ditch attempt to get the invite to Worlds. Me and my friend Chad Harris ( Scizor ) did huge amounts of playtesting at night to work on a deck we felt would be able to fight against the entire field.

Looking at the metagame, we saw Blaziken getting weakened by all of the strong Hidden legends cards ( Gorebyss, Walrein, Rock TM, Desert Ruins, and improved draw power like Steven's Advice making other decks like Gardevoir to be more consistant than before ) so we assumed the metagame would shift over to a more Gardevoir/Anti Blaze metagame. That led to a very simple choice. Metagross. Metagross was the best possible answer to beating Gardevoir, and a tanked Metagross EX would have no problem dealing with any water decks, and you have a distinct advantage vs Walrein, the best anti Blaziken deck. The problem? Getting the deck to be fast enough, and a way to fight Blaze which I still asummed would be 10-15% of the field, even thought I felt it would be weeded out within the first few rounds.

While some requested that I do not post my deck list, I can say that we both used Metagross Gorebyss, simply because that had already been posted online by others and is now accessible knowledge. I will take Chad's request and not post my deck list for this tournament.

Anyways, I rode down with YoungJohn06, after first heading 3 hours from home to stay at my grandparents in Zanesville OH. John slid by on his way to Maryland at about 1 am, and picked me up and we continued our trip. We listened to a bunch of good music as we drove a long and tiresome trip out to the Stadium Challenge while thinking of last minute changes. I debated using Metagross and Walrein, but felt much more confident in the draw engine for Metagross and that really decided it for me.

We arrive at Rockville at about 8 am, an hour before deck registration began, and we had no time nor place to sleep. We pulled an all nighter and headed straight into the tournament right off the bat. We grabbed a bit of food ( BACON! ) to eat from the hotel buffet than waited for the tournament to begin anxiously. I met up with some friends from Origins ( Luke, Cory, Mike, Sean, etc ) and finally round 1 pairings were posted.

Round 1 vs Mike P, Crobyss

Great, I get paired with Mike, who had a really strong Crobyss list, and had already won a trip. We both get off to a really strong start and I see all of this Crobyss running around and wish I added Island Cave or Regice, but I had neither. My Metagross goes down rather quick to his decks overall offense, and I look rather helpless as prizes are even but my Gorebyss's kick in high gear here, with 2 of them taking over the board and eventually giving me game as I rebuild another Metagross just in case. I had to play a bit more conservatively to watch out for a Rock TM in case it would destroy all my DREs, but I think he had used his only one, but you could never take that risk. GREAT game, and its good to see a game where both decks get strong games.

1-0

Round 2 vs Shiftry

This one was contraversial. I hate playing vs Shiftry. I had very minimal experience against the deck, but I did hear alot of rumors about it and had some decent predecided strategies to use against it. This of course doesn't matter as my hand is horrible, and he hits me with a Desert Shaman early and really screws with me. I am stuck Copycatting for very low hands and it takes me forever to even get in the game, and he gets a distinct prize lead on me. I do manage to get my Metagross EX up with 3 metal energy on it and this puts me in command of the game even though he is healing his Shiftrys heavily. Now that I have control of the game, I start to make the worst mistakes imaginable. I play my Desert Ruins to counter his LOW PRESSURE SYSTEM. Anyone see the mistake here? Yeah. I was so used to always countering gyms, and the deck rarely actually used Meta EX in games, that i just played it, and ended up putting MYSELF on a clock. I had the nurses to stay alive but it REALLY screwed me over and made me very worried about Rock TM again. Well, that hurt me alot and got me a bit flustered but I was confident I could still win. Next up, he counters it with another LPS...and I use my first attack to bring up a Seedot to KO it...OOPS. 50 HP. I want to kill myself as it was blatantly obvious, and because I was still down on prizes, I NEEDED to get prizes back quickly before time ran out. My final mistake came when I used a Switch on Meta EX and brought up Gorebyss, only realizing it couldn't OHKO his defending pokemon, and now I had screwed myself by resetting my Extra Comet Punch back down to 50 over 100, AGAIN costing myself key time and damage on my Meta EX by letting him live an extra turn. In the end I get put in a really bad position by this and have to use alot of draw power to try and find answers, which I don't. Fast forward tot he last turn. I have no cards left. I glance through my hand, seeing if I have any Copycats left or any way to get Furret into play, as I was decking next turn. I had none as I dropped Town Volunteers from my list. I don't know the time left but I knew it was close. I could KO his active this turn...that would tie us on prizes. I knew I had a minute to complete a legitimate turn length wise, so I drop my energy and a few evolutions into play, and Nurse a damageless pokemon to take time. I retreat and TIME is called, and I attack for my last prize. My opponent calls the judges over as all he had to do was attack or simply pass for the game to be his, but I took a legitimate turn length and it was put in the books as a draw.

1-0-1

We get lunch break, and I grab an orange sode ( Fanta...stupid crappy pop...argh ) and at this point the lack of sleep REALLY hits me and I just want the rounds to move on as I was dying.

Round 3 vs Gardevoir

My deck's favorite non-Walrein match up! Yay! I don't remember much about this match besides that my deck got going, and when that happens, Metagross wins. It didn't take very long, and even if Gardevoir gets set up, it loses pretty much. Fairly easy win, and what I needed to un-demoralize me after my repeated misplays last game.

2-0-1

Round 4 vs Gardevoir

I was happy to see Gardevoir AGAIN. This time, it was pretty disgusting though. I get a metal energy on a Beldum turn one. Turn 2, Rare Candy, Metagross, Double Rainbow Energy. He had a Ralts and a Wobbuffet active. That was pretty much game right there, BUT I go to attack. 1 Heads. He brineys and Warp Points. I keep up my attacking as he gets nothing, but I go 4 for 24 on my flips and he gets a gex out and fights me for a bit but I overcome it easily enough as he never does get set up, and I eat through his Pokemon rather easily despite my ridiculous opening flips.

3-0-1

All I needed was one more win and I was in top 16. I could realistically ID the next two games and get in as well, as 4-2 may make it, but I wasn't willing to risk that.

Round 5 vs John with Blaziken

GREAT. We have FIVE Blaziken lists in this entire tournament and I get paired with one. I get a strong start with a quick Gorebyss presence and he gets a really weak start. I start to get up on prizes and he repeatedly scores heads with Dunsparce giving him some recovery time, but it was too late at this point. I eventually take the win with lots of Gorebyss and Metagross with a Metal plus some Ruins help. His horrible start didn't help, but with the opening I had I should beat Blaziken most of the time anyways, from what me and Chad tested.

4-0-1

YES! I was t16. I was overjoyed. I have pretty much jobbed EVERY single tournament this entire year, so even making t16 was a relief finally lol. Next round was an ID.

Round 6 vs Swampert Magneton

We ID to both get t16 for sure, but we head away and play it out anyways. He gets a better start but my guys get set up and in the long run I win it out, and with enough confidence that it made me feel like I should be able to win if we got paired in t16. I mainly needed the fun game so I could see how I matched vs a deck I had under-tested against online.

4-0-2

Ok, deck check time, and I am good to go. Finally, t16. Pretty much everyone I knew there had t16ed. Only CFK's Blaziken t16ed so I was very excited. The field looked very VERY favorable for me. Lots of Gardy and Grass, plus water. I just wanted to get the Invite as i could get to Worlds with YJ anyways, but I figured if I got a trip I wouldn't be particularly UPSET or anything ;)

T16 vs Ray with Crobat Beedrill

Ray is a friend of my friend Dave who I met down at Origins this year, so i recognized him. I saw him using Grass and got alot more confident. If I held my Warp Energyes and Switches for the right times to escape status I should be fine.

Game 1

Game 1 is pretty strongly in my favor, as my type advantage plus strong Metagross flips let me get a very one sided set up going as his deck just dies to a really bad match up.

Game 2 is pretty much the same, as I get a Meta EX up with 4 metal...he flips 4 heads with Beedrill and does 30 to me. I win shortly there after.

So I get t8...one more win and an invite. We had enough players in the t16 that already had invites that there was a good chance I would get a trickle down anyways, so it didn't really matter.

T8 vs Sceptile Milotic.

Game 1

I get going fast and he doesn't match my speed but he gets set up given time too, and its on. I get too many metal energy up too quickly, and theres not much he can do in this situation. I win game 1 pretty strongly, as again Grass does not do good in this match up.

Game 2

I get NOTHING. I mean absolutely NOTHING. I am stuck without energy with a full bench and no way to even get Evolutions in play. Hes up huge on prizes by this point and has basically every Sceptile he needs in play. I finally draw into a Furret I believe and get some Metal on my Meta EX ( not enough though ) and it turns into an all out slug fest. He keeps healing and poison ringing me, which means I have no counter poison answers. I keep fighting, but ask for the time. 20 minutes. I concede, knowing it would take a miracle to win, and wanting as much time as possible for game 3 just to be safe.

Game 3

This game we both get some massive hate, and I can't get energy to save my life. He doesn't have anything strong either. I get Furret though, and off I go. I get set up really quickly now and its just over as he wastes Nurses and milotics on staying alive, and I conserve my switching for my later. I win shortly after, very relieved after 2 really bad starts.

I am t4. I am SOOOOO estatic at this point. I got my invite. Me, Plaidlesspez, YoungJohn and Eric Craig are all t4. Eric already has his trip, so it trickles down. Meaning, as long as Eric wins his game, and YJ wins, than I get the trip ( YJ was ranked higher than me...so he'd get third ) I get paired with YJ for t4, and Eric vs Plaid. This means we both get trips if Eric wins, and looking at the match up ( Shiftry vs Starmie Gorebyss ) he should rather easily.

T4 vs YJ with Walrein

Game 1

This goes heavily in favor of Metagross as it gets a strong set up and there is nothing he can do to stop it. Really quick game with Metagross just walking all over the place as expected.

Game 2

This one, I get a slow start and have to retreat off, or lose, a total of 2 metal energy just to stay in the game and I know this puts me in a very bad spot. He learned how to fight me as well, and goes a more Milotic based approach on me, and it works. I do get set up a bit, but much like game 2 vs Sceptile, its a losing battle so I just forfeit.

Game 3

This one we started off pretty even, and he used Milotic as he should, but I kept using a quick Meta EX to drag up Walreins and get the damage around, and eventually decided just to stay up on prizes as I knew the time was low for this round. I use Nurse timely to heal myself, and get some strong flips vs Milotic with my normal Metagross, and the game is solidly mine as both of his Milotic are in play, meaning no healing. TIME is called with me having 1 prize, him 6.

They try to make us do sudden death, even though by prizes I had the third game won and that should have meant I got the win. YJ offers to concede anyways, to my surprise, and we go into T2. John, that was really awesome of you, thank you.

T2 vs Eric Craig

I hate fighting shiftry, and his was really strong. I offer to concede to him, as he had said earlier he was playing to get the title. I didn't need it. I got the trip. That's all I needed. I was tired, I wanted to get food and than sleep. He convinced me to play it out anyways though, and we go at it.

Game 1

I get a rather weak start again, and I don't really play very hard and we just goof around for awhile as we play. Even if I did have my heart into the game there was no way I could have won. His deck had a DISTINCT advantage over mine and should have won.

Game 2

I get a good start this time and we duke it out. I get up on prizes but his Shiftry Swarm gets going really quick and I am soon at a loss for anything to do. I go for some paralyzation flips, knowing he ran no switch after the first game, but kept flippin tails. OOPS! haha. I grab a piece of paper and jot down what I think his exact list was. I was 2 cards off because I forgot the 2 Dual Balls. Still, pretty good guessing IMO -_-

Anyways, he won the match 2-0, and he was hands down the most enjoyable opponent that I had all day. It was nice to have a very relaxed game with someone, with nothing on the line for me. His deck completely deserved the win, and I don't think there was any deck there that day that really could have won unless he had a really bad hand. Awesome job man, and thanks for the free Teddiursa doll! Those things rule!

So all in all, 7-1-2 for the day, not bad for me. My deck definitely proved to be as strong as I expected, and next time I tell Chad the Thursday before an event " Maybe we should test vs Shiftry and Crobyss " and he says " Nah, no one plays Shiftry and Crobyss is easy " I will SHOOT him.

Props

EVERYONE. Event was great. Even tho the Psyduck sprayed me like thrice!!! ARGh ;)

WHERE WAS THE SLEEP!?!?!?!?!?!

So after 2 days of no sleep, I finally crash at the hotel and get a sunday filled with 10 hours of driving again. YAY! Anyways, it was worth it, and I'll see everyone at Worlds!

Tyranitar666 great job on winning the trip!!! I really liked your Metagross deck and you definitely knew how to play it!!! Remember not to discard those supporters too early at Worlds...LOL. See ya there.

Hahah yeah. Well, I am lazy, and I'm out of practice, what can ya say? I made that mistake like what, 800 times that weekend? Borderline 4 digits I'd bet. Anyways, lets just hope it carries over to Worlds when the moneys on the line.

All the Blaziken really was gone, wasn't it? But seriously, we used to have loads of it before HL came out. I think it might come back at Worlds though. There will be a lot of people playing Blaze at Worlds who either played rogue or didn't play at Stadiums, since the trip wasn't on the line for them. But who knows?

Great job Chris. I liked your deck idea from the time it started coming back on me in our game. We both made too many mistakes in that rd 2 match-up, so a draw wasn't a horrible thing in the long run. The Judges made the right call and I hope no hard feelings exist from that match (at least I have no hard feelings). As I told you then, and again here, you did a great job and built a good deck. It deserved to go deep into the tourney.

Lucky there was not a judge around...nursing a pokemon with no damage on just to waste time? If that is not a definition of stalling, I do not know what is. Didn't look like it mattered in the long run though (although you would have been dropped, with a loss, into the "blaziken zone")

Good job in making it, see you at worlds...dare you to do that on a table I am judging.

Fulop it was worth listening to all that PIRN JUST to hear that you DIDN'T JOB IT THIS TIME AROUND! =)

Awesome congrats once again, and I'll duke it out w/ you at Worlds - see you in the final 16 w/ the rest of Neo :)

Hey! I didn't know you were Tyranitar 666. Well, it was an interesting 16 and I wish you luck in Orlando!

Hey Chris, great job getting the trip. I'll hopefully see you again at Worlds, I'm just not sure if my parents will pay for my trip and let me go yet. I didn't know you stopped playing for a while, I thought you just stopped going on the boards cause they are kinda lame.

BTW, suicide machines rock.

Meganium- I don't know if I played a Pokemon Nurse on a damageless Pokemon, or if it was one with 1-2 damage that didn't matter. I don't even know it was a Nurse. I just played the mandatory Supporter for the term. Also, playing a Nurse on a damageless Pokemon is NOT a pointless move, as you can aim to keep hand size lower vs Copycat, and towards Feedback, and towards being used to Steven's Advice the next turn even, so its very easy to argue that it was not a 100% useless move. None the less, it wasn't as straight forward as simply nursing no damage, I used that as an example.

Lawman- Yeah, no hard feelings at all from my side. I felt bad after doing it too, its just with a trip on the line you have to do what you can. In reality, I am going to start bringing a watch with me to all tournaments and keep track of time along with the judges. This lets me know when I need to start to play faster, aim to simply win on prizes, or when a literal legal stall out can be done. I also would have benefited from a visible clock during the t4 in game 3 vs John as if I had another turn or two the debate over Sudden Death wouldn't have been an issue.

Psycodad- Yeah, thanks a TON for the cards you gave me. While I didn't use most of them this tournament, I know that the access to the new set really is what kept me interested in testing and even bothering with a new deck. Up until Chad had suggested Meta and Gorebyss, I was going to be using Milotic Walrein myself, but this deck was just so awesome I had to go with it.

Plaidlesspez- Oh yeah the Suicide Machines rock! Listening to their newest CD " A Match And Some Gasoline " as I type this report! I hope you can make it to Worlds man, you deserve it.

Physics Squirrel- I don't think it is an issue of players opting NOT to use Blaze, or using worse decks. Players still have the chance to win more boxes as well as the VIP kit for finishing higher, no one would player a weaker deck in a situation like this. Blaziken is INCREDIBLY weaker now mainly due to all of the strong hate cards released in HL. It really just isn't as good any more, and I think Gardevoir will go the same way, now with Shiftry and Metagross doing so well. Blaziken is still an amazing force in the format, but just not in the current metagame. Worlds will be interesting. I have a big prediction as to its metagame, but why would I give it away when I can hopefully guess it and have an advantage? ;)

Thanks for all the replies guys, im just glad I'm not stuck on 2nd page already ;)

Congradulations Tyranitar666. And we can't forget you for making that HUGE Bex thread. Congrats man you deserved it and good luck at Worlds!

hmmm

Haha. Yeah. Cause Bex was insane. HL helped to straighten it out though, but prior to it was unstoppable. I hope thats not what I am remembered for though haha. I did alot before that, even though I don't post much...

Lol. 2nd page is sexy.

Congrats on the trip, sir. Granted, even if you did enter Blaziken zone, it's not like a 4-1-1 record would have booted you =P

Yup. Metagross and Shiftry are sexy, sexy women. I love and lust them both.

nice job chris. heheh, i couldn't understand most of your matches due to my complete lackage of any HL cards whatsover, but hey. I READ IT. btw im so going to kill my parents if they dont let me steal your other trip. ^^

Hey Chris, great job. Glad to see you finally started winning again. ;x I'll see you at Worlds.

Oh yeah, ROFL nike. ;x
