What do you mean, 'update'?

if you mean to update so you can use platinum, you cannot do that.

it says in your pokemon platinum instruction manual (it would help if people actualy READ things before asking)
that pokemon platinum is NOT compattible with My pokemon Ranch.

the Japanese version of My Pokemon Ranch got a free update, but not the english version.
BTW-your friend is wrong.
