Ok so here's the deal. leanring the game to teach my nephew how to play. Got a question regarding building decks, probably pretty obvious but I just want to be sure. How do i know which printing of the pokemon is legal? For example there is a common printing of meowth in the heartgold set and there is a printing of meowth in noble victories. Both sets are legal in modified. Are both versions of the card? I know one is common and one is ultra rare. If both are legal to play in the environment can I have 4 of each or only 4 total but any combination of the two versions to total 4? Thanks in advance for helping out.

Every card currently in rotation is legal (HGSS onwards). Therefore both meowths are legal and can be used in a deck together. However, there is a game rule which restricts the number of pokemon of the same name to 4 copies per deck. Both the meowths are called 'Meowth' therefore one may only use a total combination of 4 in the deck.

i.e a legal deck could include:
1 x Meowth NV
3 x Meowth HGSS
No more 'Meowth'(s) are allowed in this deck.

Hope I helped :)

Thanks. thats exactly what i needed to know. Being an old magic and l5r player. Wasn't really sure how it worked. Since those games don't have any cards sharing names with different abilities. Just want to make sure I teach my nephew right. Thanks again

But also don't forget that it isn't just about what Pokemon it is. It's about the name of the card.
For example, there is Ho-oh and Ho-oh LEGEND. These are two separate cards so it's possible to have something like 4 Ho-oh LEGEND pieces and 4 Ho-oh in one deck. They both have different names. This also applies for the upcoming EXs.

That makes sense. So its 4 of any card with the same title. And basically the same pokemon can have different abilities and such. As long as they are printed in a legal set for modified I can use any combination of them.
